There is little hope of Shattenkirk rebuilding his value.

Kinda disagree. If he's healthy and he's producing on the PP, his value will pop right back up. Not to the point where we'll get a big return for him, but something decent.

There will always be a demand for right handed offensive dmen in this league.

Condon actually makes $3m this season

I would venture a guess that most of Callahan's $5.8m cap hit is covered under insurance.

Basically, Ottawa will be saving ~$2.7-2.8m in real dollars AND they get the added value of using Callahan's full cap hit to help get to the cap floor. It's cap circumvention just like Arizona did

I would just rather see Fox and DeAngelo get those PP minutes (I'm sure Trouba will play PP too, as we're paying him so much $, but I would rather he focus on big shutdown, PK minutes; but I digress) than Shattenskirk try and be productive all for the sake of trading him next summer with money returned.

...and apparently not, since his value--like his play--is in the toilet, and we can't even give him away.

Why can't the Rangers play Trouba and ADA on PP1 and Shattenkirk on PP2? Trouba is not a PPQB in the same mold as ADA or Shattenkirk with the way they move the puck. He's more of a triggerman

The cap penalty in years 3+4 for Smith and Staal is really almost inconsequential. $2.5m total? With the cap going up in those years it's really not going to effect how Gorton runs the team.

I don't think the prescient question here is whether Shattenkirk could return to a relatively competent form (Though perhaps not his peak since he has certainly lost speed.)

It's whether the amount of PP time that he would absorb might better be used by players like DeAngelo, Fox (later season), or Trouba.

I'm all for keeping and playing Shatty this year, but I want this with the expectation and hope that he would become tradeable next offseason

I think this would HAVE to be the case, although if Fox struggles, keeping Shattenkirk until next years deadline wouldn't be a bad move either. It gives Gorton a bit more flexibility

I don't think anyone is expecting 50-55 points Shatenkirk. But considering his bonus structure next offseason and the fact that even if he gets to 35-40 points he should have some value around the league

His play was in the toilet because of his knee. If he's healthy, he's a quality offensive dmen. He was trending upwards late last season.

Fox might need seasoning in Hartford, just like a lot of young dmen entering this league. Nothing wrong with that. He's in our long term plans and won't be there for long, but don't be upset or surprised if he starts in the AHL.

Lol every team gets rid of all their cap issues with no problem and we can't get rid of anyone.

If the team structured the contracts better, they’d have an easier time dumping money

Hockeystatminer goes into this stuff quite often on twitter but recently he was talking about how if Namestnikov’s deal was front loaded, the team would have no problem
moving him right now

2nd half shattenkirk last year was pretty good,

Yeah, I don’t have a big problem with Shatty’s play. D’s scoring is largely dependent on environment, usage, and especially PP time. Shatty is good on the PP and would produce in the right environment.

With that said — we don’t got much room for him. And I am convinced that if we would have openings — something good would come from it. The game is changing and younger players do well. If we can give kids a shot something good will come from it.

The general notion is that we will have time to build a team. But just in a couple of years the pressure will mount for this this to get anywhere. Looking at the cup winners the last decades, so many roster spots are populated by players that weren’t big prospects at the start with it, but could grow with the team as it became better. The more spots we can open, the better.

43 minutes left. If nobody is waived until then and that waivers/buyout window closes - I presume Larry is right and that Shatty gets bought out. Likely one more move nonetheless. I have heard several times that Smith will get bought out. Soon we shall see

Shatty is the last dman I'd buyout with all things considered, assuming Kreider or Names can be moved.

I'd like to buyout Staal not just for the cap savings, but so he's no longer on the roster. Same with Smith.

GoAwayStaalAndSmith might be my new username.

Maybe both Shattenkirk and Staal?

Do not understand. Doesn't Shatty have to be waived prior to buyout?

We typically do front load contracts. Names was signed for 2 years though. I don't think we could have done much with so little term.

Shatty's contract, for example, was 8m, 8m, 6.6M, and 2M. Trouba's is 12M, 10M, 8M, 6M, 8M, 6M, and 6M. Same with Smith.
