Back in 2007, Brooks wrote an article asserting that the Rangers could trade Prucha (who was coming off a 30 goal season and put up 22 goals that season) for Martin Rucinsky - whom the Rangers had walked away from the prior offseason and failed to re-sign... I was so annoyed at his insinuation that the Rangers were going to trade an asset in Prucha (whom I valued) for an older, past-his-prime player that our team had previously walked away from months earlier... It just seemed like the most assinine move to make... So I wrote Brooks a very critical email and I don't think I expected to receive a response, more like I needed to vent... However he actually emailed me back and I didn't have the guts to open it, LOL...
True fan.
First, to write the letter and second, to worry about what Larry Brooks had to say to you.

That email could still be somewhere in your in box...

I am dying to know the takers for this Namestikov trade. Please list the teams excited about taking on this guy as a one year rental at 4M without giving salary back. (they don't exist)
Right now you’re probably right

Guaranteed he’ll have multiple suitors at the deadline though

So retain some money?

Who? I honestly don't think they exist. He will be a ranger next year at 4M (which BTW, a year ago before Kakko and Panarin and Trouba and all the good things was perfectly fine). They may dump him at the deadline for a 4th round pick or something...but that's about it.

I'm not understanding your argument, are you implying they are worse off than last year? The sum of Panarin, Trouba, Kakko plus the additional year for Chytil, Howden, ADA and even Lias should be more than enough to cover the loss of production you're describing. I'm also not saying that these kids will all be superstars next year nor am I saying they will hoist the trophy, but it's not some impossible feat for them to be 15-20 points better than last year which puts them on the cusp of the playoffs.
I am not implying anything. I am stating that as things stand right now, the team is not really all that much better than last year.

Their record last year was fattened by the loser point. Panarin and Trouba are great, but Kakko and Kravstov will not replace the production of Hayes and Zucc. If the Rangers trade one of Kreider or Buch, then the addition of Panarim will not be enough to mitigate the hit of loosing these 3 players. Chytil, Howden, ADA & Lias, we all hope take steps forward. But the chances of all 4 making gigantic strides is very low. Some will take much smaller steps forward than others. Prospects rarely develop at a liner pace. That is not even to account for what happens if some...gasp.....take steps backward.

Now let's bring in the defense. As of now, Staal and Shattenkirk have roles on the team. They have another year of depreciation. Let's say they are both gone, one way or the other. You now have Hajek and his 5 games of experience, Lindgren and his two and Fox with his none. 3 rookies manning a defense does not a solid defense make. They WILL have growing pains. They are not all going to instantly become NHL caliber d-men over night.

Goaltending? Henke is another year older. Georgiev showed promise but also had some mediocre stretches. How many times have young goalies taken steps backwards or worse yet, showed themselves to be flashes in the pan? Don't bring up Shesty please as he has never played in North America yet.

Nothing is impossible. And sure, the could be 20 points better. They could also be absolutely no better than last year as a whole. Which is what I currently see. Some things will be better, some remain the same, some worse. All in all, I do not see a team that is materially better than last year. Especially of one of Kredier or Buch goes.

Would have loved to have tried to find a way to dump namestnikov and hand those $4M over to Gusev. Oh well, nice job NJ. Their top 6 is going to be disgusting.

It's really not that bad next year as there isn't anyone to sign. 2 years from now as the cap increases there are moves they can make and cap space available with Staal, Smith, Shattenkirk and Hank all at the end of their deal (or whoever is left that isn't bought out)
Until we see DeAngelo and Lemieux signed to something, I am not ready to say that there will be no one to sign. And we can only speculate on where the cap goes.

I'm going to speculate that it's going up. Because that's what it does every year.

Names having value for mid pick at the deadline doesn't outweight having Shattenkirk's buyout on the books next season. I'd rather have Shattenkirk over the others (Smith/Staal) and deal with him potentially being grouchy that a kid is taking his spot on the team.

Buyout Names
Bury Smith and Beleskey
Trade Kreider (1st and non-roster player)

If both DeAngelo and Lemiuex are playing on their QO, this blows it out of the water with space. They could even keep Names at this point.

And in the future vis a vis dead cap space?

First off, Kreider will probably be coming of the books next year. I think the Rangers would like to hold onto him for this coming year for similar reasons why I don't think they're looking to buy out Staal. They think he can help players develop (though, obviously, he's a much better player than Staal). But I don't really think they're looking to sign him long-term and would have no problem trading him at the deadline. The cap is going to go up with the new TV contract unless they negotiate a different way to calculate it in order to reduce the impact of escrow. However, in that case, there will certainly be compliance buyouts available.

Second, Smith is the cheapest of the 3 in terms of deadspace next year (20-21), although the Staal buyout saves more money. It will help that Girardi's buyout cost drops by $2m the same year. After that, for the following 2 years, he's only something like $80k more in dead space than Staal would be... $200k less than Shattenkirk. But either way, it's $1.2m for 2 years. Once Lundqvist and whichever player(s) they don't buy out come off the books, I really don't foresee that $1.2m changing much in our cap situation.

Since Staal seems likely to stick around, of the two I consider Smith the better buyout option this year between him and Shattenkirk, so long as we can also move Namestnikov. Mostly because Shattenkirk's not much of a savings for next year. I'd rather continue for one more year to try to deal him.

Has too be the slowest buyout window day in Ranger history...GMJG out puffin on the old man's cigar's...fml
It's no fun for those of us who want closure, but I'm convinced his deliberateness is only good for the organization.

We had to wait for a Fox trade. Result: got him without giving up a 1st.
We had to wait for a Trouba trade. Result: got him for Pionk + 20th overall.
We had to wait for the organization to name a HFD HC. Result: got Knoblauch.

I really dont understand why people are so anxious. Either there is a cap dump by wednesday or Gorton just buys out one of our slugs. One or the other is going to happen because we have to be cap compliant. Just relax.
He could not buy anyone out and make whatever moves are necessary a month from now.

Not saying he will, but he could... :)

Im gonna be throwing a lot of "ifs" in this but does anyone else feel that there is a chance this team could be a lot better than we are all giving it credit for? I realize that we haven't cleared cap space out but suppose(and I'm not advocating it), but just suppose Kreider is here next season and our lines shake out like this to start.

Panarin Zibanajad Kakko
Kreider Chytil Buchnevich
Kravtsov Howden Strome
Lemieux Anderson Fast

Skjei Trouba
Hajek DeAngelo
Staal Fox

Outside of the possibility of Chytil failing at center for us that lineup looks pretty decent to me and personally I'd try Kravtsov in that spot as well given his play at the world juniors as a center. A lot would have to go right, players like Chytil, Howden and Anderson would have to take a step and Hajek, Fox, Kakko and Kravtsov would have to be NHL ready and able to fill major holes. There are a lot of if's but on paper I like the look of the scoring depth we have. IF,a lot of things went right I could see us in a playoff spot and being a hard team to knock off. I'm actually excited for this year, I have a feeling Anderson and Chytil will be better players.
