I don't get the NHL. Can we really expect Kreider to go for a 1st and a prospect when guys like Gusev are going for a 2nd and a 3rd? Sure Gusev is unproven but I think most people expect him to be around the same ballpark of caliber of player.
You said the magic words...Gusev is unproven. He certainly does look very good though.

Would you have expected the Jets to trade Trouba for Pionk and the 20th overall pick? Vegas didn't have the cap space to sign Gusev. Something had to give. If we were to trade Kreider at full cap hit right now, he'd probably return something similar.

Yes. NHL track record is huge.

Buyout Smith, trade Namestnikov, bury Beleskey... DeAngelo 2.25, Lemieux 1.5... $550k in cap space.

This is how I would like to see things play out. As easy as it would be to buyout Shatty as a quick fix, I'm not liking the dead cap space it creates next season (regardless)..That extra money could be very useful moving forward. As for Staal, he'll be better, primarily because he'll be sheltered more with Trouba in the mix.

I'm more confused by why no other team seemed to be willing to beat that offer. The same teams rumored to be potential Kreider destinations could easily beat that offer.

I think if we wait until trade deadline we might be able to get a deal done but in the current cap landscape I'm starting to feel a bit doubtful we'd be able to get a good return in the summer.

To sign Panarin and Trouba, one of Buch or Kreider will be going. How else are you making the cap work?

Describe a lot better. Let's even pretend that both Kreider and Buch are both on the team. How are you replacing the production of Hayes and Zucc? Trouba will be make things better, but what about the rest of the D? Do you believe that DeAngelo will suddenly become a superstar or that Hajek's 5 games worth of experience makes him an instant top-4? Or that Fox will instantly be a 50 point player? Do you envision the K boys getting 100 points between the two of them? Short of that, I am not sure who this team is competing for for the playoffs unless scenarios hit perfectly for each variable.

I'm not understanding your argument, are you implying they are worse off than last year? The sum of Panarin, Trouba, Kakko plus the additional year for Chytil, Howden, ADA and even Lias should be more than enough to cover the loss of production you're describing. I'm also not saying that these kids will all be superstars next year nor am I saying they will hoist the trophy, but it's not some impossible feat for them to be 15-20 points better than last year which puts them on the cusp of the playoffs.

Thats a very nice gamble for NJ, though they'll have to try to convince him to stay if he makes it big at the end of that term.

If we had the cap space and hadn't signed Panarin, I would lament not beating that offer.

Stop with the Gusev talk... Guy hasn't stepped foot on NA ice and people are acting like we just missed out on "the missing piece"... Could care less about the guy... NEXT!

Its amazing how a 12M player (sorry...11.6) can put you in a situation where you probably will have to make decisions that will have a longer term negative impact. Ultimately, no one is going to bail a team out. The Rangers will need multiple buyouts.

Next year's offseason teams will be giving players away for nothing (or even better - with draft capital for you to help them). Shame.

2019 - Shattenkirk and Smith bought out
2020 - Kreider walks as a free agent
2021 - K'Andre Miller bought out one year into his ELC
2022 - Can't afford Kakko's qualifying offer, walks as a free agent

Truly sad times.

1. Shattenkirk buyout
2. Smith buyout + Namestnikov traded at 50% retention
Does that contemplate who the dead cap space will affect the RFAs that will need to be signed over next several years? Or ZBad himself? I understand the short term fix, but has that examined all of the long term view?

And in the future vis a vis dead cap space?

It's really not that bad next year as there isn't anyone to sign. 2 years from now as the cap increases there are moves they can make and cap space available with Staal, Smith, Shattenkirk and Hank all at the end of their deal (or whoever is left that isn't bought out)

I am dying to know the takers for this Namestikov trade. Please list the teams excited about taking on this guy as a one year rental at 4M without giving salary back. (they don't exist)

DeAngelo could breakout next year and demand 5+.

Is next year a problem for us?

What did I miss? I see lots of cap space for us next year. We have 16 million, even assuming a Shattenkirk buyout. We also will need to factor in DeAngelo's extension, but if it's similar to Buch, that leaves $13m.

We have to replace about 5 forwards, but, they will all be bottom 6 spots. Even at 2m a piece, we should have a couple million to play with (and they won't all be $2m a piece).
