Never realized subtraction was so fancy. +/- must be a fancy stat too then.
I don't love plus minus either, and a lot of the people who talk hockey on the XM agree with me there, especially retired players.

I bought into the hype for Bereglazov
Yeah, that's a move I would hope the Rangers would have been in on had Panarin gone elsewhere. With Panarin on board, I couldn't see it working out.Good for them. Good move for the Devils.
We just didnt have the need / space for him. He wasnt a guy at 27 years old with no NA experience that we had to have.
Bereglazov is not Rykov.
Its a cautionary tale, but it would be foolish to assume he can't hack it in the NHL.

I wouldn't be sad to see it blow up in their faces. I wonder what the cost will be. 2nd and a prospect maybe?
RB posted a 3rd this year and a 2nd in 2021
I said it in the other thread--let's see him be better than Shipachyov. Gusev oozes talent, but need to see it happen here. Not sure why some think this is a steal for the Devils
Gusev could be a nice player but he hasn’t played in the NHL. A 2nd and 3rd is fair value, it’s not like Shero bent McPhee over or anything
Spot on.
The last sentence of your quote is what so many people don't realize. Here, but even more so in daily life in NYC.
Gonna be a rough year for the average NYC sports fan who dabbles in hockey cause everything else sucks. They've been seeing all we did and signed and this and that.
Cap crunch is gonna hurt one way or another. Either in aforementioned dead space or ****ty trades. Likely a bit of both.
21-22 is where things get interesting unless we're pretty damn savvy and lucky.
I completely agree. Occam's Razor as regards the cap: Smith is bought out, and they try to move either Namestnikov or Strome for the best return possible. If that's a mid-round pick, so be it; better to sell one of them for pennies on the dollar than Kreider. And worse-case scenario, if you find no takers for either, even at the cost of a 7th round pick, you buy out Namestnikov at the end of the window. Boom, $6MM saved, team comfortably under the cap.
(Honestly, if they do have to go worst-case, that means putting Namestnikov on waivers before buying him out, right? Is the league-wide cap situation so bad that Vlad Namestnikov wouldn't get scooped up by some enterprising team rather than risking competing with the rest of the league for his services in order to save a few hundred thousand?)
And what's the downside to this "worst-case" scenario? You forfeit whatever you could have returned for Vlad Namestnikov, which would've been... what? A 2nd round pick? At absolute best? Sure, I'd rather have that pick, but teams have paid a lot more than a 2nd round pick to get cap compliant in the past.
All that being said, I'm optimistic the team doesn't have to go worst-case scenario. Say, the best you can do is Strome at $1MM retained for a 4th. Crappy return, but you're now compliant, and here are your lines:
Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich – reunited and it feels so good!
Panarin-Chytil-Kravtsov – Panarin as the mentor/insurance blanket for the rookie center. Kravtsov on his right, because of how well they meshed in rookie camp last year.
Namestnikov-Andersson-Kakko – Kakko and Andersson would be a load on the forecheck/in the corners. Takes the pressure off of Andersson to be the focus of the line, especially with the highly touted rookie on one wing and a savvy, all-situations player like Names on the other.
Lemieux-Howden-Fast – love that as a fourth line. Responsible, aggressive, high energy.
Do I think that group is competing for the cup? Not this year, no. Not with the kids still needing a couple of years to develop, not with the D a work in progress, and not with the goaltending situation in flux. But it sets the cap up to be in a good place next year (and especially in the years to follow) and it'll be fun as hell to watch.

To sign Panarin and Trouba, one of Buch or Kreider will be going. How else are you making the cap work? They don't have to trade Kreider or Buch. And yes, the sum of their parts this year should be alot better than last year. While this team is certainly not cup ready, they have the pieces to compete for a playoff spot.
Panarin needs a finisher on his line..The guy is top five in the league at setting up primary scoring chances. Sure you want him on a line with Chytil and Kravtsov? I hope Kravtsov turns out to be that guy, but I also think we would be better served with a little more experience (to start the season) on Panarin's line. Either way, should be exciting to watch these kids mature on the ice..
He is going to be the finisher. On ZBad's line.Panarin needs a finisher on his line.

I have it more as the winger depth being the issue here more so than the salary cap.Yet another opportunity the contracts of Staal, Smith and Shattenkirk have forced this organization to miss out on.

Just a feelin?1. Shattenkirk buyout
2. Smith buyout + Namestnikov traded at 50% retention
Just answering the question. I prefer the second option.Just a feelin?
