I hate Broduer as much as the next guy but he wasn’t just a goalie. He handled the puck like a 6th skater. The trapezoid is there because of him. It is hard to quantify goal prevention. You can look at save % but how many goals were prevented and odd man rushes started the other way because he got the puck out of the zone. He wasn’t a butterfly goalie either. He was out of his crease constantly. Hank had been an adventure out of the net when he plays the puck.

His career high in assists was 4 so I don't think he was starting odd-man rushes on the regular.

There are definitely arguments to be made for him lol
How many goalies are better? I’m young but when I watch highlights of old hockey the goalies look terrible and I’d think the greatest of this generation is the greatest of all time. Who’s better; Hasek? Fatso? Roy?
Yes. Also, a bunch of old timers. Need to judge them all in the context of their time.

Of course, but are we going to argue that Patrick Roy isn’t top-3 because of the Avs rosters being silly? No one ever mentions that with Roy.

Most all time greats play with other all time greats. Gretzky had Messier, Coffey, Kurri. Lemieux had Jagr and Francis. Crosby has Malkin. Joe Montana had Jerry Rice (among many others). Are we going to delegitimize their accomplishments because of their supporting casts?
And of course, there’s the fact that the argument works both ways. Is Rice as good a WR if Montana isn’t throwing to him?

Let’s not run Brodeur down because he played for the enemy or because he is a jerk. He was a very good goaltender who benefitted from playing in a defensive system designed to maximize his ability.

That said, in this era there’s Hasek and then there’s everyone else.

But for me it was and always will be Terry Sawchuk.

Who?

Unfortunately, in the conversation of all time great goalies, Lundqvist isnt in the same tier as Broduer, Roy and Hasek. Hasek had been the best goalie in the last 50 years (since Sawchuk).

Dominic Hasek is, IMHO the greatest goalie of all time.

To me number 2 is Henrik.

I think both Roy and fatso are overrated but still great. I'd have Roy top 5, fatso top 10.

My issue is I'm only 39 years old, I haven't seen all the super old guys play.

@bobbop do you think Gorts has some framework of a deal for Kreider . So from the Bruins they have agreed to x y and z and Gorts weighs it against other offers and bides his time just in case a crazy desperate offer comes in? And then before training camp decide on the Kreider question and get ready for season?

In a totally ideal world this would be the rest of the Rangers off-season.

1. Trouba signs for under 7.5 x 7.
2. Kreider re-signs on a team friendly deal 6 x 6.7 (only 3 years NMC)
3. Smith bought out or traded.
4. Buch, Lemmy and TDA re-signed at reasonable deals. (Buch signs for 5 years)
5. Namestnikov traded.
6. Shattenkirk and/or Staal traded.
7. A great Hartford coaching staff hired.

To some extent, I feel like Kreider or Buch only go if there's a legit chance of landing a future top 6 center with the return. Either a young Zibby type or a high draft pick. Otherwise it doesn't make a ton of sense to trade either.

I don’t think there is anyone outside of the Rangers fanbase labeling Henrik as a top 3 goalie ever. He’s not close to Hasek, Roy, or Broduer. There’s a good argument for top 10. Top 3...no way.

Hasek for me.

There was a two year period in Buffalo where all teams could do was pepper him and hope for a deflection because he was nullifying any skilled players and/or set plays shot his way. I can't think of another goalie that got into the heads of the other teams players and staff like he did in his peak years.

The Dominator wasn't just a catchy nick-name.

No I don’t. Gorton has to clear $7-8 MM off the payroll for next year. Smith, a given, only gets you $3.3MM. Trading either Kreider or Buchnevich gets you the rest. If he can’t make a trade now, they have to buy out Shattenkirk and the clock is ticking on that. You are not going to be able to move Namestnikov ‘s entire salary with retention or taking a contract back. Not enough. Something will happen between now and Buchnevich’s arb date. If Rangers are $6-7MM over the cap, they have no leverage to make any good deals.

I’d trade Namestnikov with retention just to get that done. Buyout Smith. If they don’t find a deal they like for Kreider, trading Fast and replacing him with an ELC would probably get you there.

Namestnikov with $1m retained =$3m savings
Smith buyout = $3.3m
Trade Fast for a pick and replace with Meskanen/McKegg/Nieves/Gettinger on the 4th line = $1m in savings

$7.3m in savings total

If no one is traded, they need to buy out Shattenkirk. Assuming Trouba, DeAngelo, Buchnevich and Lemeuix will not cost more than 14 mill. If they cost more, than they need two by outs. Could of course try to trade Beleskey with a pick. That saves 825k.

They can always decide to have Lemieux and DeAngelo sign their QO, taking them to arb eligibility in 2020. That would come down to 906k for ADA and 881k for Lemmy. Buchnevich 2.5m for 2 years, Trouba 7m and you can fit that under the cap with 1 buy out
