On the Gusev talks, for me his quality is a no-brainer. He is closer to Panarin than anything near a player “just” worth 4m per. He is also really good.

With that said I am not sure how he fits in with us nor how we could fit him under the cap.

I also have no concerns about a “Shipachyov” result. First of all, Shipa didn’t fail, he never got a shot. But more importantly, Shipa is a center through which everything should go through. A real strategist that thrives with the puck slowing down the tempo. I am sure he could have success in the NHL, but at least a unit must be build around him. Gusev is totally different and has all the tools Dadonov has— who is a much better comparison — but also another dimension with his playmaking abilities.

In the right environment he could become a star and is a lesser role he could “just” be a really good winger, for which the going rate is like 6-7m at least.

Brian Boyle can kill penalties and "play fourth line," and even if he scores 20 points and kind of sucks that's a different element in our group. I'm not sure Brass isn't just a downgrade from Ryan Strome, who already isn't that great.

At the least Boyle's off puck play is useful, even the rough stuff. Brassard isn't contributing if he's not scoring. When he was younger he was average as a 3 zone center, now...not so much.

I guess our Russian quota would be fine if we traded one for another

Pointless unless we sign this Russian veteran to shield our young guns from embarrassing themselves.

Well then what you're betting on is that Brass is overvaluing himself and will have to take a bargain contract right before the season starts. You might be right. But the fact that he hasn't yet means that he wants $, term, and/or protections.

There is no way you know that. He could be holding out for more money. He could be waiting to get an offer from an east coast or Canadian team. He could have an offer from a team and he’s waiting on them to clear cap. He could be waiting for an offer from a contender. There are numerous possible scenarios.

Gusev only makes sense if they can move Kreider and Namestnikov first. It's a nice name but there isn't room for him right now, and the Rangers can't pay him yet. Even then it's a lot to clear out to roll the dice there

yep. the issue isn't selling anyone on gusev's talent but we already need to clear $8 mil and have too many bodies...so there is alot more to it then just saying its great value in a trade.

I don't want Boyle back. Watching him lose multiple fights, to guys who needed a stepladder just to punch him, was just too disheartening.

He was in multiple fights?! He’s probably barely a better fighter than slapping Alex Semin.

Honestly, I’d take him on a 1 year deal at low cost bc he’s versatile, always has value at the deadline, and is a high character guy but he likely gets overpaid.

We won’t have enough 4th liners until we sign everyone’s personal favorite 4th liners.

GM isn’t doing his job if he’s not always trying to make the team better. Shedding cap is clearly the most important thing at the moment, but if they can somehow improve upon a Nieves and/or Mckegg along the way then I’m guessing most would be all for it. Especially if that player has potential deadline and locker room value.

So what do the lines look like when Kakko inevitably gets a couple games at Center? What about the ones with Chytil at Center? You know it will at the very least be tried, because there is the chance it is successful and it is worth exploring.

Chytil Zib Buch
Panarin Kakko Kravstov
Names Howden Lias
Lemieux Strome Fast

Names Zib Kakko
Panarin Chytil Buch
Lias Howden Kravstov
Lemieux Strome Fast

If Kreider is kept (be it for a deadline trade or not) then it can get even more interesting, but then Names is likely gone; so I suppose move Chytil to 3rd line and Kreider to 1st in scenario 1 with Kakko at Center, and move Kreider just straight to top line in scenario 2 and no other changes with Chytil at Center

Idk, just spitballing - would wanna see other ideas using Kakko and Chytil at Center

If Kreider is kept (be it for a deadline trade or not) then sub him with Names, as that means Names is likely moved, or move Names to Strome's spot if both Kreider and Names are kept with Strome moving instead

How do people keep leaving out Panarin? Is this a ruse?

I like these lines with Chytil at center.

Panarin-Zibanejad-Fast
Buchnevich-Howden-Kakko
Andersson-Chytil-Kravtsov
Lemieux-Strome-x

Swap Chytil and Howden if you like.
Has Buch ever played LW? I thought he was almost exclusively RW?

And I really don't want Fast on a top line anymore, I was hoping that experiment was over

I see it as Zib and Howden are 2 of our main Centers going forward; with Strome/Names as a filler vet

Then one of Chytil/Kakko/Kravstov/Andersson will take the other Center role depending on the night
