Because I hate to break it to you but the Rangers management will not force these kids into roles they are not ready for. They need insurance. Strome is not enough.

Brassard happens to be a guy out there who would could sign a 1 year contract on the cheap and fill the role we are looking for. It has nothing to do with bringing back “castaways”. He is a center who has had a respectable career, he could have value at the trade deadline as well. We can sell him then if we see Howden/Lias/Chytil showing they can handle 2C-4C.
Literally any team could buy him for nothing right now, and yet no team has. How would we then be able to "sell him"? Do you mean sell him like we've been trying to do with Smith and Staal and Shattenkirk for months to years now?

I’m not entirely opposed to Brass, and I was never his biggest fan. But, all of his best years were with the Rangers, and he just seemed to have a spark here that he hasn’t had elsewhere. On a one year deal, it’s a decent gamble.

You have to look at our cap problem. Trading for gusev puts us in an even worse position if we offer buch. Krieder saves us .5m aav.. and I'm sure they won't take names or strome for him. Can we stop with gusev. We cant get him or afford him. The idea again is to trade names, krieder, strome, and/or buch to get cap relief.

The rangers are looking to trade these guys for picks and prospects. Gusev wants 4m aav for 2 seasons..

There are ways to create that space. I’m on my phone or I’d go into detail but there are ways.

I'm not married to the Brass idea at all. More just against the idea of assuming Howden is ready for a larger role. Not Brass b/c he's done is fine. but not Brass b/c we already have a better guy Howden is ehhhh

I'd rather live with Howden being meh than Brassard being trash.

Howden will age another year while getting better from another Meh season. All Brassard is going to do here is age and get worse.

And while I know you're not married to Brassard, my sentiment goes for any older player about to call it a career

Brian Boyle can kill penalties and "play fourth line," and even if he scores 20 points and kind of sucks that's a different element in our group. I'm not sure Brass isn't just a downgrade from Ryan Strome, who already isn't that great.

Not sure if Howden has the upside to fill a particular role, so let's overpay to sign a vet on the downswing who has almost never been able to play that particular role. <—— classic HF Boards logic.

The last time Brassard put up anything close to good 2C numbers was with us, quite some time ago.

I dont see the ways unless you are buying 2 people out and making a hell of a lot of trades. Which I've mentioned many times before that buying people out at this stage is completely short sighted and kills our cap for the next 4 years! The only tradeable guys are buch, strome, krieder, and names. And if we trade 3 out of the 4 then yes its doable. But this obsession of gusev needs to stop. It's not gonna happen and to do all of this for a 26 year old who has never played an NHL game before is a little crazy.

Brian Boyle will cost more money and can only play on the 4th line. If someone signs Brassard and he's as bad as he was last year it won't be a big deal they will just waive him after a month. And if he's not bad you got a potential 2nd/3rd line center and powerplay asset for really cheap who can help you the rest of the year or be traded for a mid-late pick at the deadline.

Heard someone say today that a signed Buchnevich very well might be dealt. Buch plus a pick to Minnesota for the future rights to Kaprisov? Buyout Smith. Voila. Minnesota needs to do something with their roster and deadwood. Now
Why trade a proven *enough* Buchie for Kaprisov

Really? Comparing aging defensemen who will making 2x and 3x more value and with NMC’s?

Yea that is a pretty sound argument from your end. As usual.

Edit: Nevermind, already answered

If brass was willing to sign a cheap one year deal without protections, he'd have been signed by now.

I think it would easily be worth it. Would not be surprising to see Kaprizov be close to a PPG player immediately when he comes over and he'll be on an ELC. Plus helps us get under the cap this year.

I was listening to Greg and Steven’s latest podcast today and Steven brought up a point I hadn’t thought of but was intrigued by, Gusev has some control over his fate as he could very easily just return to the KHL if dealt somewhere he doesn’t want to play. How high are the Rangers on his list?
The bigger and more important question would be how high is Gusev on the Rangers list?

The Rangers likely aren't entertaining these guys until they figure out their other cap-related contracts that they already have.

Not too sure about that, and definitely wouldn't bank on it by any means

He'd likely score similar to Buch but for cheaper, and maybe more upside because he is a mysterybox whereas our organization has already watched Buch for years.

No. Those deals usually occur later in the summer. Cousins, Granlund and Ritchie are the only UFAs to sign a deal for 1 year between 1 and 1.5M so far this year with a new team.

Kaprisov has been terrorizing the K since he was a teen.

Guys who do that usually go on to have stellar NHL careers. The Gusev stuff is going to be a hard fit, I'd trade for Kaprisov and wait the year in a second though.

Maybe not on our team since we have some pretty good winger depth but I think he could easily score 70+ in the right system.

Well then what you're betting on is that Brass is overvaluing himself and will have to take a bargain contract right before the season starts. You might be right. But the fact that he hasn't yet means that he wants $, term, and/or protections.

Is there a risk Kap never comes over? Not super clear why he hasn't come yet. He's already had 3 nearly ppg years in the KHL post draft and isn't coming again this year.

He is under contract (for 1 more year.)

I dont know if he has any intention of signing with Minnesota, but I have to believe he'd be all over signing with the Rangers.
