It's a no lose situation for depth. Who's going to be on the Rangers 4th line this year? Fast and who else? The Rangers need bottom six depth.

Give Burdasov an out clause if he doesn't make the team. Keep him if he proves to be a nice bottom 6 option that can forecheck, cycle, and knock in the odd goal. It sounds like Quinn will love him. He's trying to make this team harder to play against.
100% agree. Also, Fast needs to be stapled to that 4th line. I’m gonna lose it if he’s in the top 9. He’s ok for the top 9 for a shift or a game due to injuries etc, small doses.

Nieves is big and he's a really good skater. The Rangers worked him quite a bit on their PK--so to me he's been doing the things that a 4th liner needs to do. He's not going to score a lot of goals though but if we're talking about replacing him with a guy who might score more but doesn't skate that well and won't be any use on the PK I wouldn't do it--I'd much rather have Nieves.

Buchnevich’s hearing is scheduled for Monday July 29. The Rangers sign Buchnevich on the morning of the 29th. The buyout window opens 3 days after the 29th and buyout window will remain open for 48 hours.

Three days later is Thursday August 1 and the window closes on Saturday August 3. Or is it Friday and the window closes on Sunday.

There should be some closure/ more direction on how the Rangers plan to clear out money in the next 2 weeks.

Trouba’s hearing is this Thursday.

JD will be on Andy Strickland’s radio show today.

5pm Eastern. The station is listed in the tweet.

He will get his chance. Can't count on him to stay healthy, however.

They're not even technically allowed to be offered, period. The CBA prohibits verbal agreements.

Stopppppp. They weren’t supposed to be negotiating free agent contracts either before July 1st howd that play out?

How much has each team improved this offseason?

New York Rangers
In: Artemi Panarin, Jacob Trouba, Adam Fox
Out: Jimmy Vesey, Neal Pionk
Wins Added: 6.0 wins
Salary Added: $16.6M
The Rangers reeled in the biggest fish on the market in Artemi Panarin to bolster their forward ranks, but also added one of the better defenders in the league in Jacob Trouba, along with a talented defensive prospect in Adam Fox. On top of that, losing Jimmy Vesey and Neal Pionk also helps as they were both negative value contributors.
Add it all up and no team added more wins this offseason than the Rangers, and that doesn’t even include the additions of second overall pick Kaapo Kakko and 2018 ninth overall pick Vitali Kravtsov. The Rangers should be much improved this year as a result.
Whether it’s enough to make the playoffs is the big question though and I’m still hesitant to put the Rangers firmly in. They’re arguably in the conversation and away from the other bottom feeders, but the team still lacks depth at both forward and defense. It’s a huge step, but one that likely still leaves the team falling short next season as they still don’t really stack up favorably to other teams in the East.

I feel like we currently lack depth at forward and defense, but that could change quickly and dramatically depending on the progression of our younger players (and what comes of any impending deals).

imo, fox was acquired for a few reasons. first and foremost, kids talented. with ADA and fox, this team has its own version of cale makar and bowen byrum. perhaps shatty is our barrie- just no where near as good lol.

im not sure this organization intended to have trouba and fox and ADA and shatty all in camp.

shatty was shopped at the deadline, on draft day and since has been available. no takers. when there are no takers, ala staal, smith and now shatty, that tells you something. onerous contracts for poor results. we have 3 all playing defense....

fox will push ADA I'm sure. tony knows hes here and hes here to play so a few more scratches and he may lose his spot. thats motivation enough to keep it on the down low and just play.

i agree, fox was brought here to play right away. not the worst thing to have him start in hartford but if hes the better player in camp, we dont want kevin staal on the blue line.

I think when we moved Stepan--part of the idea was that ADA would be groomed to be a right side power play guy though not necessarily a no. 1 or first pairing D---and then Kevin fell in our laps. He wanted to be a Ranger and he would take less money and term to do it. I don't mind his intentions but basically since signing him the RD position on our team has been all f***ed up and we haven't really been able to properly place our RD in roles that they can handle........and he's still the guy IMO that kind of bollocks everything up.

I don't hate Kevin--I'd be fine giving him a front office or a scouting job when his career is over if only because he wanted to be a Ranger so much but he's kind in the way right now of the direction the team is going. Players decline--it's not necessarily his fault and injuries help older players decline but it is somewhat aggravating.

Anyway Fox played for two straight USA WJC teams--guys like that don't usually spend a lot of time in the minors if any at all. I don't think he's as good as Makar really but he's not light year's away either. He's a really talented player.

Was thinking exactly the same thing.

Yes everything is based on If’s and Assumptions, but that is part of the projections game.

If Kravtsov and Kakko can perform well enough, not even be stars, but produce, then it automatically makes you deeper because it slides other players down and/or keeps them from playing music chairs. Players know their roles. I know we dont WANT Lias to be a 3rd line center in his career BUT for next season he could make for a very, very solid one. Him or Howden.

We need the progression to happen.

On this topic, I’ve seen some comments from Brooks referring how Gorton and agents can’t even discuss certain things.

Brooks is mixing things up a bit with those comments. You cannot even hint at secret hand shakes or understandings or promises or whatever, but a player and a team can definitely discuss future plans. That is something else. Trouba can for example tell NYR that his plan is to sign a 1 year deal and then an 8 year deal. Gorton can tell Trouba that as of now, they would like to give him an 8 year deal next summer if things can’t get done this summer. Discussing future plans is not tampering.

It would however be questionable to hint that a player will get paid more on a second contract if he takes a cheap 1 year deal. That is because you basically create a structure that gives you a variated AAV on a long term agreement. It would also be questionable to ask a player if he would be interesting in resigning with you even if you trade him, kind of like pre-tampering. But discussing future plans shouldn’t be questionable.

There's definitely a difference between saying "the plan is to do X in the future, but we'll address it when we get there" and "we agree to do X"

Not that I expect this necessarily... but suppose we get to camp and one or more of the longer-shot kind of guys took a step forward and is ready for bottom-6 duty? I'm talking Gettinger, Fontaine, Meskanen, etc. It's really not out of the realm of possibility, but these are kinda the forgotten guys in the organization at this point.
