Exactly. I feel like signing Panarin keeps the Rangers from completing the puzzle. Maybe, I’m wrong and they get the 1B center next year, and Gorton skillfully manages the cap. But, I fear getting 85 to 90% to the goal, only to Toronto/Winnipeg cap issues short circuit the process.

I’ve embraced this rebuild because I believed the Rangers didn’t just want a repeat of the last run, but, as @Edge described, wanted to dominate the next decade. Becoming Toronto or Winnipeg falls short of that goal.
Panarin just feels like a luxury and not a necessity for the Rangers to me

That happens to every good team in a cap era. The reason we can afford him right now is because of all the ELCs. In 4 years we wont be able to sign any large UFAs

It needs to be a revolving door of talent. The one thing we should all be against is trading our top picks. Those top picks need to be replacing the players that we wont be able to afford.

Three-time 40 goal scorer, right? And Gaborik signing made sense as this team had no one in the pipeline that projected to have elite skill. The Rangers now have Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil and even Buchnevich as players who are more skilled than what was in the system at the time of the Gaborik signing.

Just because you may have elite talent doesn't mean you pass on elite talent especially when one is proven to be elite and the others have not.

Haha, kind of petty to dust that post off. Guess you can clear out the bookmark. I was wrong that he didn't wait until Marner. The point I was making that it would be stupid to wait until July 1 and expose them to an offersheet. He didn't do something stupid.

Hey, can you do me a favor and repost your comment that incorrectly said they officially signed those deals a week ago? Just some context for my post since you want to embarrass me.

When Kakko and Kravtsov are getting paid (4-7 years from now), we will need ELC to balance them.

Keeping our top picks and evaluating talent is way more important than cap space. Even if we do not sign Panarin, we will eventually have cap casualties. There's no way around it

I'd much rather see them look into trades during and after the UFA signing extravaganza rather than take part in it.

Who are the players you expect to see moved?
I can see Torts being a big fan of Kreider.

I'd expect a prospect, CLB's 2020 1st coming our way (top 10 protected), plus a conditional 2021 2nd if Kreider signs in Columbus.

For people who are worrying about cap crunch after our ELC contracts expire... Has it occurred to you we could potentially deal Panarin for draft picks if all our rookies hit their ceiling and we need to deal with cap? And I do not believe it is probable that Panarin with that contract is going to have negative value 3 or 4 years down the line (possible yes, just not likely). Even if it meant dealing him for a 7th round, it would still be worth it IMHO.

The only problem would be a NMC that AP would be unwilling to waive. But even a limited NMC would be fine I guess.

And this is a scenario where most of our prospects develop into key players, which would be a fantastic position to be in.

Interesting. Tortorella and Kreider strike me as extreme end of the spectrum characters; possibly polar opposite in fact. Torts - napoleon complex control freak...Kreider - individualistic, prone hot/cold streaks...

Don't see that match at all, but I like the premise of the trade.

$11 million per contracts aren’t exactly easy to move, and more than likely include either taking back a bad contracts and/or retention.

Especially for players who will likely be on a decline from when they signed that contract... And let's not forget the whole NMC which you can be damn sure Panarin will have regardless of where he signs.

We can already see what kind of headache a NMC is causing with our own guys (Staal+Hank).

Not sure they can trade more picks away. But they have a lot of cap space. Maybe they take on a bad contract for a roster player/nhl ready prospect.

Agreed.

If he was a 1C or 1D, things would be a little different. Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil, Buch, Kreider(?)...

Guess we'll find out in a few days what the outcome is.
Adding him makes dealing some of the guys you mentioned for a legit 1-2 C a much easier pill to swallow.
