Here's one other thing about how close this will be if they sign Panarin... we're likely going to have to defer bonus cap hits until 20-21, which it feels pretty likely we'll have at least one guy hit some bonuses this year.

Even with Panarin they would have plenty of cap room next season so that's not a huge concern. If those guys hit on the bonuses we should be celebrating.

Pure speculation because I don’t know the source but supposedly the offer from the Rangers is 11.25M per for 7 years. If that’s the case(speculation) I’ll say that does hurt but it’s also about right.

Can a team hemorrhaging money, pay Panarin $15M in bonuses for the first few years? Now what will Bob want? They could theoretically be paying $25-30M in bonuses...

I have a hard time seeing that happen

They might. The reduction in the Girardi buyout will help. $2.5m. But to afford Panarin, a lot of what they'd have coming off would already be gone (Kreider, Namestnikov, Vesey).... Strome's contract does expire, as well as Fast... but replacing Fast with an ELC, for example, doesn't even save $1m. I think we'd be in for another tight cap year.

I mean, it's fine... just something to think about.

I can only imagine that the Rangers have made it abundantly clear to Panarin that his marketability and opportunity for sponsorship dollars are significantly higher in NYC. Whether that would close the gap on net pay he’d otherwise with Florida is unknown. All things considered, the lure of NYC plus our young heavily Russian core will likely also need to weigh heavy for him to ultimately choose the Rangers.

Gaborik signed a 5 year deal and was traded before he finished it. If Panarin is willing to sign for 5 years, I'm game.
Didn't Gaborik/5 years happen because of his injury history? Not comparable

Also, Panarin is a better player than Gaborik.. In every way minus straight line speed.

@DutchShamrock

I hope to god we do have similar problems as Toronto

That means we have too many elite players.

That's not a bad thing.
This is cavalier. Letting Bozak, JVR and Gardiner isn't a bad thing? Giving away a 1st to get rid of Marleau isn't a bad thing? Failing to fix a single roster problem in 2 years, resulting in a pair first round exits isn't a bad thing?

Look, it's not that Panarin=losing. I do question the fans' motivation. We are actively trying to shed multiple wings. We need a top 6 center and a #1 left d. Crickets there. We can be patient on those fronts. We have two potential top wings now. We are shopping a top line wing right now. I want to build a great team instead of collecting great players without a thought of roster construction or the future.

same guy also followed up with this...

Hopefully both are true... Now give Zucc his 5th year

Gaborik was a better goal scorer than Panarin pretty easily

Three-time 40 goal scorer, right? And Gaborik signing made sense as this team had no one in the pipeline that projected to have elite skill. The Rangers now have Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil and even Buchnevich as players who are more skilled than what was in the system at the time of the Gaborik signing.

Exactly. I feel like signing Panarin keeps the Rangers from completing the puzzle. Maybe, I’m wrong and they get the 1B center next year, and Gorton skillfully manages the cap. But, I fear getting 85 to 90% to the goal, only to Toronto/Winnipeg cap issues short circuit the process.

I’ve embraced this rebuild because I believed the Rangers didn’t just want a repeat of the last run, but, as @Edge described, wanted to dominate the next decade. Becoming Toronto or Winnipeg falls short of that goal.
