What you're describing is something of a soft cap which is why you've seen many people on here advocate for that.

They COULD feasibly do it
The owners could have easily fixed the issue by adding another compliance buyout or two, like they did after the last lockout. But the cheapskate owners of the league refused to have ANY money outside of the cap system.

I mean, if there was any justification for compliance buyouts, I'd think the pandemic is a pretty good one. No one could have predicted how that would mess up the natural escalation of the salary cap that front offices plan for when they sign player contracts.

We signed the Panarin, Trouba, and Kreider deals leading right up to the pandemic, and subsequent flat cap. We probably save $2.5-3.5M total on those 3 contracts if they're signed a year later.

that's true. but Winnipeg also sucks

Rockstar top6 and their best line will be their 3rd line.

Hockey is Different here.
I’m definitely worried that this doesn’t all come together. Tarasenko’s slow start is a warning so far. There’s time, there’s time, yes, but time runs out quickly.

Good I think Jones should still have a future here. Him and Robertson both should be a part of the future D.

Most Rangerific deadline ever, I hate it.

Maybe it works this time, I don't completely discount that possibility, yet if not, again, most Rangerific deadline ever.
There’s reason to be excited about Kane but let’s not forget that just a few weeks ago we were all saying how badly he has played this year - and it’s true - and how he wasn’t the answer we needed.

He will need to play much better as a Ranger than he has this year as a Blackhawk to make a difference. It’s possible that he does.

It’s also possible he doesn’t and we underachieve. I’ve seen this movie end badly before.

I don't disagree, but we still won. It is so hard to win in this league that I'd be happy if I got to see one more.
I was 8 and just getting into hockey when we won that cup. To be honest, I only remember small snippets of the experience. It's a little depressing to think it's been that long, but I'd like to see another cup before I'm a broken down old man.

The one thing about Kane lost in all this is that people are talking a lot about the chemistry between Kane and Paranin and they're talking a lot about Kane's postseason success: nobody is mentioning that those two things never coincided.
I can guarantee Kane will not be a point player in playoffs. Joke I am wrong but usually a Rangers thing.

If the Kane trade is made tonight for tomorrow’s cap. The Rangers swap Carpenter for Schneider.

12 forwards. 7 D. 2 G

If Miller is suspended(assuming it's 3 games)and Lindgren can't play because of the injury(place Lindgren on short-term/regular IR) the Rangers could play with 17 skaters for the Philly game and then call up Hajek for the Ottawa game on Thursday using emergency roster exception. The Rangers won’t have the room for an AHL recall. They can play one player short for one game and then use the roster emergency exception for the rest of the season. $850,000 players or less. Zero cap hits.

And they got guys like Copp, Vatrano and Motte last year, all of who performed well. Tarasenko and especially Kane are a cut above those players dude. They both can still play and it's not like the Rangers sold the farm for either of them if reports on Kane return are correct. It's a no brainer. Plus they added Mikkola and Motte to the mix also. This is a really good team.
The rangers are gonna get outplayed physically and be worn down against teams like Boston and tb. Islanders to if they make even devil are tougher. We added soft players and lost grit and toughness this year.

So go watch the “tough” teams then, and don’t come back here if the Rangers are lighting teams up, unless it’s to eat a heaping serving of crow.

It's obvious that Drury wasn't planning on making a move for Kane once he made the deal to grab 91 and 77 from STL. Kane pushed for this to happen, and we had to give away VK for a bag of pucks and make a bunch of ridiculous paper cap transactions to wiggle enough room. If this was seen as a serious option earlier, we would have been clearing cap space much earlier in the season. Under those circumstances, I'd expect the return to be very, very modest. Drury was never the pursuer here.

I mean I can understand people having concerns about Kanes health, but his drive? Come on. I'll roll the dice on Kane over some of the names that were suggested here. Awful players like Ritchie and other slow/"tough" 4th liners that cant even skate.

We added Motte and Mikkola, neither one is soft, we also filled two gaping holes in our top 6 with good players. We could add Messier and still lose to someone in the east its that tight but i feel much better about our chances now. Its all up to Shesty to be as good as he can be to make the difference.

The Rangers can make the Kane deal today after 5pm and it would count for cap purposes on Wednesday.

Will Miller be suspended? He was supposed to have a hearing but no suspension was announced. Is the hearing today?

The Rangers were planning for option #1 before Miller got a match penalty and a hearing from the NHL

Lindgren was seen in the Rangers room after the game on Sunday. He didn't seem to be seriously hurt. He was wearing a suit. No sling.

Vancouver had space but they cleared money with the Stillman trade.

Hearing is today.

Give me Kane especially at the prices some other guys have gone for.

People fundamentally do not understand that the Rangers are among the biggest and most physical teams in the league. Boston added Hathaway because they aren't a physical team. The Islanders likely wont even make the payoffs. And to say the Devils are tougher than us just means you don't watch enough hockey. Not sure you're even a Ranger fan but it's truly wild how so many of our fans are so quick to hate everything they do. I appreciate that you need physicality and team toughness to win (the Rangers have proven they have it), but we removed Reaves & Blais' "TUFFNESS" and added 2 guys with 4 combined Stanley Cups between them and 90+ playoff goals, for basically peanuts.

Yeah but Tanner Jeannot might shout in a random scrum during a 5-2 Rangers win in the ECF

Tells you how much toughness is overrated.

Hard to play against is more important. Kakko is hard to play against. Chytil and Lafreniere have the size and skill to be hard to play against, though they have to develop that part of their game more. Trocheck and Kreider are hard to play against (sometimes, especially in Kreider's case).

What you can't have is too many floaters like Panarin.

But guys like Reaves and Blais just couldn't play, or at least not play in this system (amazingly Blais has 2 goals since leaving like 2 weeks ago). Getting "toughness" that is just toughness for toughness' sake is a waste.

You need skilled players first, second, third, and fourth. It then helps if some of them can play a tough game in addition to their skill.

Blais and Reaves were guys who couldn't check because they were too slow and hit for the sake of hitting. That's Sather grit.

We kept all of our players who are good forecheckers and all of the leaders from last year's team that came back multiple times in the playoffs.
