What they should be or the worst possible options Gallant will trot out?
I'm sure there's issues that I'm missing, and it does benefit teams with deeper pockets a lot more; but if the cap is mainly (only) about ensuring a 50/50 split of HRR, could you not set the upper and lower limits during the off-season like they do now, make everyone be under the cap for Day 1 and then allow unlimited trading throughout the season as long as you don't end up under the cap floor?

That way that total player payment is met and if teams want to load up big for a run they are going to be penalised by spending for those assets and then spending again to get rid of them before the next Day 1.

Just a thought. If Kekalainen overplayed his hand for Gavrikov (Boston and Toronto have both moved on), I wonder if that would be a better pickup than Kane. Gav's full cap hit is roughly the same as Kane at 25%.
We're not just taking Kane because we can fit him cap-wise. We're taking him because he's coming without much of a return at all. Drury has seemingly been adamant about keeping certain core pieces (ie. better of the two 2023 1st rounders, Othmann, etc.), so unless whoever you take in place of Kane is also coming for peanuts, it's a non-starter.

That's the piece everyone seems to be missing with our moves. While we're still going "all in" like other teams, Drury is actually being incredibly frugal and not mortgaging the future at all.

Does this mean today's the day? Or do they need to wait for tomorrow so they can recall Schneider? This stuff is so mind-numbing

Kane is 2.625 mil. We have enough to make the deal. The problem is we wouldn't have enough to call Schneider back up.

I don't know why Carpenter is still on the roster. Maybe he's going back to Chicago in the deal. If that's the case, then we need a total of 2.8 mil to trade for Kane and recall Schneider. I'm guessing we'll hit 2.8 mil on Wednesday, so I don't expect us to make the deal until then.

This Kane deal is going to sting more than most here expect.
From all reports, the absolute most is...

- Zac Jones
- Noah Laba
- 2023 2nd (conditional 1st if we win the Cup)
- 3rd or 4th going to the team retaining salary

That's not a single vital piece, unless we win the Cup. Granted, that's just the speculation.

If the deal can happen today, the only reason it wouldn't is because they wouldn't be able to recall Schneider on Wednesday. Otherwise I think we would see something at some point today.

All signs seemingly point to the move being made Wednesday. Again though, all Twitter speculation...but that's at least the very popular speculation.

With the chance that Dallas could fall out of playoff contention or even into a wild card spot and they went to the trouble of adding a condition to the Tarasenko deal of the LOWER of the two picks, I would be shocked if they traded a first for Kane.

(Not to mention, several reports that Drury isnt dealing their other first round pick).

Yes, Drury likely didnt think he was in on Kane after the Tank deal, but adding that condition to the deal shows me they really want to keep not only one pick in the first but also the higher one.

Things the deal won't include:

Anyone currently on the roster other than Carpenter
Schneider (since he's not currently on the roster)
A 1st round pick
Othmann
Cuylle

Things the deal probably won't include:

Sykora
Robertson
Garand
Berard

Looking at what's left, I'm not too worried.

Agreed, I’d be surprised it the 2023 1st was dealt but could definitely see a conditional 2024 1st going.

Oh no, not Laba. Was getting really curious about him.

In no way shape or form the 1st. Pls!

Man, watching that game last night and I'm like Lias Andersson still can't crack this forward group even on the 3rd line?

Man, I swung and missed at that pick that's for sure.
People complain about Lafreniere looking invisible at times, but Byfield looks lost. I know he doesn't have the same NHL games under his belt, but he did spend time in the AHL and now plays with Kopitar and Kempe

He had 3 pretty good scoring opportunities yesterday. Completely whiffed on the 3rd one late in the final period.

But yeah, otherwise he still looks like the huge, super raw kid who hasn't found his way yet. I see the allure of his size and skillset, but he's certainly lost.

If the Rangers are going for it, as all signs indicate - it wouldnt be smart or make sense to trade Jones.

Lindgren is already hurt- if one of Harper/Miller/Mikkola is out then you are looking at Hajek or Roberston taking their spot. Jones is the most seasoned of the 3, 2nd in line to that spot. You need retain depth.

To play him on Wednesday?

Why can't he play Wednesday if the deal is made then?

Exactly. I wanted another defenseman anyway.

I wouldn't even mind Kane with Laffy and Chytil... He has always done very well with young talent.

Kreider Zibs Kakko
Panarin Trocheck Tank
Laffy Chytil Kane

there's a lot of options to choose from... luckily we have 20 games to sort it out... I'm not that confident in the coaching staff making the right reads though
If we thought the kids were bad deferring with Kreider and Mika and Bread and Tocheck, just wait until you see them with Patrick freaking Kane lol. They may never attempt to shoot the puck again.

This Kane deal is going to sting more than most here expect.
Just for the record, the deal could be a 2nd and our 8th ranked prospect and there will be people calling it a massive overpay.

Trading the likes of Cuylle or sykora for a rental would sting or of course a first especially this years
