it's cuz they're in the same division and same geographic area and people are stuck on the idea that the Islanders ended the Rangers playoff hopes by being a big tough playoff team

there's little point in trying to model your team after the Islanders unless your coach is also Barry Trotz.
It's all about a system. Really only their 4th line has tough players on it.

Barron showed that he can play with an edge at this level. The path to top nine minutes will be an uphill one for him because of the team's LW depth, but I liked what I saw from him in his limited minutes here.

I think we've kind of reached a consensus here that 'veteran LD partner for Nils' is a priority this offseason, we just aren't totally in agreement as to whether that should come via trade or free agency.

Watching the playoff games this offseason- plenty of teams are playing pretty, pass heavy, perimeter hockey for a lot of the games. Yes we see the uptick in shot blocking commitment and net front brutality that always comes with the postseason, but I don't think the suggestion that skill hockey dies in the playoffs is true any longer, at least not to the same degree.

"Hard to play against" means more than finishing checks or after whistle scrums. Getting faster makes you harder to play against, as does stifling puck possession and a solid neutral zone trap system when ahead.

Oh and no to Monahan. He's just Strome with extra steps. If we want Strome keep Strome.

After watching the Islanders impose their will on the Penguins, I would hope Drury & Co. took notes.

This was a clinic in how to compete and win in the playoffs by a team that is purpose built.

And as recent evidence would suggest, the Rangers in their present form, have no hope of emulating.

Get busy Rangers. You have school to attend, with the Islanders as your task masters.
The only note that Drury should have taken based off that series is “Bad goaltending loses series.”

yeah when on their game they play an extremely disciplined system that does a great job at preventing the kind of cross ice passes that the Rangers want to use so much and the Rangers haven't been good at adapting or balancing their system
Ideally I'd want this team to keep making those cross ice passes when possible because they are very high scoring chances if the passes connect, but they also need to be able to crash the net and cycle especially when playing a team like the Isles. Doing one opens up the other IMO, relying heavily on one or the other limits the effectiveness of the team

Lol, guys.

I'm no fan of the Islanders or their style but they beat a pretty decent team in Pittsburgh. And the game was not terrible to watch either.

Are any of you suggesting that the Rangers would stand even a ghost of a chance in a playoff with the Islanders right now? Or even the Penguins?

If I did not know any better, I'd swear some of you are against having a team that could match the grit and tenacity of the Islanders. Am I wrong on that? Honest question.

Let me be clear. I'm all for having exciting hockey. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with having some grit and toughness to balance out the skill we have.

I'd just like to add "big and tough" to skilled and exciting. I think it is absolutely doable.

If you love the Islanders so much you should just date them already

Listening to Rishaug on Leafs Lunch. He says the Oilers need a Josh Anderson-type player. Wait in line bud.

The Rangers could only be so lucky to have such hard nosed players like *checks notes* Mat Barzal, Jordan Eberle, and Josh Bailey...

....it's that they've balanced those players with other players.

Or is that too hard to see?

I get that you hate the Islanders. Same with most of us. But you need not be obtuse.

Islanders? No. Penguins with Jarry and our offense? Yes.

I don’t hate the Islanders, that rivalry’s barely existed the past decade so I can’t say their team really concerns me. I just think it’s odd to get fixated on a team that has accomplished about as much as the soft, skilled 2015 New York Rangers.

There are plenty of recipes for a cup winning team and this team should probably focus on following the recipe of an actual cup winner.

The Isles can hang their hats on their ECF losses until they actually prove they’re a team built to win the cup.

Yes, I believe the Rangers would have beat the Penguins with the Defense and Goaltending they have. Both bad normally, but their goaltending was extra horrific. The Islanders struggled to dominate play against a poor defense and even worse goaltending. They certainly capitalized on mistakes but hardly did anything special against PIT.

You're still missing the point. Pens lost the series because of goaltending and NOTHING else.

These Isles take me back to Torts' Rangers. Physicality and effort throughout but not enough talent to take it all. The difference is that their superstar is 1C while for those Rangers it was Hank. And honestly I would rather take my chances with the King in the net rather than Barzal at 1C.

I think what may Rangers fans are missing about the Fishsticks is that the sum of the parts, as coached by Trotz, is greater than the whole. Time will tell.

Not to take anything away from Trotz, but sometimes these coaches get a little more credit than they deserve because their style keeps back scoring and as a concequence the public eye of their roster. Barzal is one of the top guys in the game, they have many good players. Also, look at Vegas, just having most players around their prime really pays off.

Ultimately, our division has just not been very good. It was a bad fit for us since many teams are so physical, but like Pittsburgh, they aren’t great. Boston isn’t that good. Washington has many issues.

Agreed w this. And count me as someone who doesn't think the Islanders have what it takes to go all the way...but will be interesting to see what the reactions are if they are able to beat Boston.
