Not really. Some teams inquired what it would take to get him via trade at the beginning of the season but their GM threw cold water on it right away. He came out and said he’s not available, part of the long term plans, etc and what have you. Barkov isn’t the type of guy that would make a public trade request like Eichel would either. So that’s where the information stops. FLA finally making the playoffs might have killed our chances. He might not think he’s wasting his prime of his career there with a team that is unlikely to make the postseason.Where did the Barkov talk come from? Is there any indication he isn't staying in Florida? I haven't heard a thing in that regard.
The hope is that when FLA is allowed to sign him to a massive extension this year, he declines and informs them he will be going to Free Agency. That would indicate that he wants out and wants to go to a bigger market with a team that is more inclined to make the postseason for the rest of his prime/career.
Those of us that are praying for this to happen, hopes he takes the Panarin route and comes to NY. With the talent we have at wings, D, and in goal I’d argue Barkov couldn’t go to another team where he would slot in so perfectly. Playing on a line of LaF/panarin-Barkov-Kakko. With him in the middle of the first line and all the young talent we have plus Panarin it would pretty much Guarantee a playoff birth for the entirety of his next deal.
The only hope is this little taste of playoff hockey makes him hungry for wanting to get his name on the cup and would want a change in market to more of a sure thing. So right now there’s a 1-5% chance he leaves but if he doesn’t sign long term at the first possible time, somethings up. And that’s what we’re all praying for
