Don’t think I’m an 82 game season the panthers are a better team then the rangers with a proper coach. Especially if we go back to normal division play. Rangers also have a better farm and more high end young players then the panthers.

this year, FLA got hot at the right time and got career years from guys that aren’t 1st/2nd liners. No shot they keep up that kind of current production in a full season.
As far as Barkov leaving FLA, chances are pretty slim, but if he doesn’t sign a long term deal next year at the earliest point the panthers can offer it to him, there is at least a small hope he holds out for FA.

I’d argue position by position the rangers are the better team currently and in the next 5-6 years. They are Taylor made right now for a player like Barkov to come in and lead this team for years. More then likely it would be better for his career statistically and in terms of post season appearances if he jetted to take the rangers 1C job. So I’d hold off on the panthers being the much better team he’s leaving
I'd argue that a team that finished well above another team is better.

I'd also make a wager with you about whether Barkov is on the Rangers to start the 22-23 season.

Yes, on top of being 1 of only 3 states in the US to have good state tax laws ( NV, TX, and FLA). Florida has a booming economy, night life, etc. it’s everything a millionaire in his 20’s could want. Women, sunshine, beaches, and freaking Disney world. If Barky were to move on, it would be a career decision about wanting to go to a new team, fresh start, years in postseason, multiple chances at the cup that the panthers might not be able to afford him. Odds are even if he leaves he keeps a residence and probably retires there. FLA Is also a very attractive FA destination. Like I said, the chances of him leaving are pretty slim

As a resident of NY and Florida, can tell you it’s not just for retired people. Lots of people in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s moving down there. West coast is starting to really take off now. Sarasota and Tampa areas are great and starting to really build up. I’m also about an hour from Disney World. Lol.

this year on a covid abbreviated schedule with messed up divisions yes you would be correct, the panthers were better then the Quinn led rangers.
Next year, when things are back to normal sure, I’ll bet you the rangers are the better team. From then on and in the future.

And as far as Barkov goes, I don’t know what your betting? I already stated the chances of him leaving Florida are pretty slim. The only way possible he becomes a ranger is if he doesn’t sign a long term extension next season and is intent on going UFA

I like the blanket statement about the panthers being the better team without considering any variables though. That’s a great way to prove your point
- they didn’t lose Huberdeau for 3 weeks cause of an insane Russian
- they play in a weaker division that plays worse teams more
-NY was one of the hardest hit places by covid in the world suffering from some of the most severe restrictions while FLA was not
- perhaps the most glaring reason we had Quinn they had Quinnvelle . even though their names are similar one is the better coach

all of these are contributing factors as to why the panthers had a better record this year. I do not believe they have the better team overall. Kudos to them for getting hot and making the playoffs for the first time in forever. It sucks that they lost Ekbald to injury but I’m not even going to bring up the rangers injury woes.

Florida is the most booming place in America right now and everyone & their dog is moving there. There is a mass exodus from the likes of New York & California the past couple years, thousands are moving to Florida everyday. California lost congressional seats this year for the first time ever. 330,000 people moved to Florida from April 2020 to April 2021 alone. "Post-college youth" aren't exactly the most objective group to ask opinions on states from, and will have a bias against Florida for obvious reasons

The reason I'm specifically referring to post-college youth is because that's specifically the age Barkov is - 25yrs old.

Here's a link to an article about the top ten states specifically young people aged 25-29 moved to in the last year:
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-st...people-are-moving-to-these-10-states?slide=11. Florida is not on that list.

And COVID is ending, this is a convo for another board but I don't think these migrations patterns out of big cities are necessarily going to hold to the same number they did over the last year.

Lastly, other than Tom Brady going to the Pats, which Florida team in any sport is stacked with Free Agents that chose to go there? And as far as the Tom Brady example goes, his two primary residences for the last 10 years have been NYC and LA. Not to mention that Brady hasn't once said FL taxes were the reason for wanting to play there. And I think a 43 yr old hall of famer at the end of his career moving to FL is a bit different than 25 year old Barkov.

But Barkov is a multi-millionaire athlete with a high school education, not your average Starbucks barista with an arts degree lol. I don’t want to veer off topic but I think there are a lot of issues pushing people to Texas & Florida outside of the pandemic. The pandemic just sorta exacerbated all of them. It’s hard to group everyone as one, who knows what Barkov prefers growing up a Finn. As someone who grew up in Canada I absolutely loathe our weather and I would love to play in a place like Florida

The issue with Barkov is not going to be state tax rates, nice weather or any other perceived amenity. If (big IF) he wants to leave Florida, it’s because he wants a bigger stage ( e.g, New York) much like Panarin. I have no idea what’s inside his head but I’m hoping he has questions about his future in Florida. And maybe that quiet noise about Quennville possibly bolting for Seattle may help stir the pot..

Barkov is one guy I’d empty the vault for.

x100%

Also, apparently Barkov doesn't even spend his offseasons in Florida:
"During the regular season, he resides in Boca Raton, Florida with his mother Olga, and in his hometown of Tampere in the summer, where he owns a lakeside villa."

I don't see any reason Barkov would leave Florida apart from wanting to play in a bigger market as you point out. That being said, I'd say the chances of him leaving as a FA are extremely slim.

Florida played in a fantasy hockey division, so that argument is lacking serious context. Again, there is little to no difference between the 19-20 Panthers and the 20-21 Panthers except the Panthers this year played 5 of the shittiest teams in the league for 40 of their games. And did not even play an entire season.

The Rangers, on the other hand, played 32 games against the Penguins, Islanders, Capitals and Bruins. And as @jay from jersey stated, the Panthers didn't lose a top 5 player in the league because of a political character assassination attempt.

I don't know if this is necessarily a smoking gun, 90% of guys go back to their home towns after the season.

Why are we taking Jake Virtanen? I thought he has some shit going on away from hockey and that he is no longer allowed in the nhl?
MacEwan adds that toughness and grit on the 4th line.
The 1st round pick is nice means that our first can be in play for a proper two way 2nd line center.

Sorry. I honestly did not know enough about Virtanens stupid and unforgivable stuff (if true) off ice. Replacing him in the trade.

Somewhat off-topic, because I truly don't believe Barkov is going to base his signing decision primarily on whether he wants to keep living in Florida, but...

I've known/met a lot of young people ages 21-35 who grew up in Florida. I've yet to meet one who speaks particularly highly of it. I think Florida is a great state to go to college in, and obviously retire in, but I'm not aware of a big post-college youth movement happening in that direction.

Barkov clearly has enough money to live in the absolute nicest part of whatever city he chooses to play for. He has the money to travel to whatever beach vacations his heart desires, whenever he wants.

This idea that Florida is the most ideal destination in the US for professional athletes gets brought up a lot here, but the results just don't really seem to back it up. In any sport.

Lebron, Wade and Bosh teamed up in Miami cause of the cap space and opportunity. Not because they were all obsessed with Florida. Where are the examples of huge athletes who weren't drafted by Florida teams deciding to play for Florida teams?
Agreed. I think location is important, for sure. But players can spend the off-season anywhere they’d like. Not to mention, teams are on the road much of the year. Location is probably a little less important that we make it out to be.

Ehh that’s like asking if you rather have food poisoning or hemroids. At this point I’d be happy with future picks to restock the cupboard because you know a trade is coming where we are dealing some of our young prospects. For who and where I don’t know yet but it’s coming soon as sure as I’m sitting here

I played against Billy Tibbetts in a high level men's league in MA. He wanted to fight me in the parking lot because I was back checking.

I was like what is wrong with you?

don’t know if Virtanen is a good comparable for Tibbetts who has a serious screw loose but there’s no way any NHL team takes on Virtanen right now with the charges against him.

Where did the Barkov talk come from? Is there any indication he isn't staying in Florida? I haven't heard a thing in that regard.

Why are we taking Jake Virtanen? I thought he has some shit going on away from hockey and that he is no longer allowed in the nhl?
.

Nah, there is an investigation ongoing against him as well as a civil suit. I have no idea what the time frame are for these things.

They should be waited out, so ‘innocent until proven guilty’ doesn’t quite apply — but, even if it’s far from optimal, there must be an ‘innocent if not convicted’ approach to these things, and maybe especially in relation to public figures. Or at least ‘innocent unless at least an investigation finds that things look very suspsect’. Look, an approach like this will be unfair to certain individuals, because it’s so hard to prove these things, it’s just unfortunate, but we cannot have a situation where if one person accuses another person — that person instantly is banned from performing his trade the rest of his life and persona non grata in all circles.

So I definitely think Virtanen still should be considered, after and if the above criteria’s are met. How long could that take, I have no idea.
