Wade Redden was 31 years old, already widely-known to be declining, and signed a deal that paid him 10.9% of the cap which would stretch until his in '08.

How does that compare to a Trouba who is 25, coming off his best season, and paid 9.8% of the cap in '19?

Redden was 11.46%. He was paid like an elite player.

Asking him to step into a role he's probably not suited for is the thing. And the Rangers do this constantly.

Hell, they're lucky Zibanejad did it.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that long term NYR will be asking Trouba to do much more than he did in Winnipeg. The only difference is that we won't have a player on the left who is hounding minutes like Byfuglien.

Team's top PK pairing, 2nd/3rd PP option, and a regular top 4 even strength shift.

Hell, if DeAngelo and/or Fox are as good as some people on here hope, he may not even be the top pairing guy forever at ES.

That's assuming they actually let Chytil do that, and assuming Chytil is even an NHL center which is a big one.

It's more likely that we end up with Strome being bad at it the entire year which Brassard could have done for way less money.

Except we already spent that money on Strome... so... what point are you trying to make here?

Byfuglien plays the right. When healthy, ahead of Trouba.

In an ideal world, you can have Staal in the press box....

Crazy talk. Heard this same slop last year. He's finished. His minutes will be reduced, bla, bla bla… Meanwhile his minutes increased as the season progressed. He was always valued as a top shutdown D -man, playing against opponent's top lines. Nothing has changed. There were questions he would go down in the depth chart last year, and proved everyone wrong. A season later we hear more of the same crap. Staal will remain a valuable asset to this team. Even if he can't do 21 min per game. Who do they have to replace him? No one on this blueline is considered a shutdown D -men other than him.

You think it is a coincidence since we let go Girardi and Mac our D has been as porous as hell? These three with Staal included, were why for ten years we were always one of the top teams in defense.

Give Staal the benefit of the doubt. He bleeds Ranger Blue and deserves better. The coach will put the best players on the ice this season, and you can bet Staal will be one of them.

This dude came in just so I didn't have the hottest takes on the page. Team player.

I think Staal has value on the team and on the ice, but even I don't think he's a good player anymore. In purely hockey terms, 3rd pairing D at best.

We have Kakko, Kravtsov, and Kreider. Panarin was a luxury. But again, I'm not that against the Panarin signing because he's legitimately elite. Trouba is not.

Agreed. Panarin is a star, worth the money. Trouba is not. Had one good year and gets 8 mil for what's seems like a lifetime. His contract will haunt us down the road. It was only a matter of time before the Rangers reverted back to their old ways in spending on free agents and having no cap space. They have a long history. One letter a year ago ain't gonna change that.

Yeah, and I think just having that guy with size and that can skate out there for crucial 5 on 5 minutes is really valuable too.

It’s just different shifts.

He proved his worth (as doubts persisted), as his stock rose throughout the year. I expect nothing less this season. Still has a great stick in breaking up plays. I highly doubt he will be relegated to third line minutes. He play his usual 18-19.

He's bad by every metric. Coaches leaning on him because he's a vet is a usual hockey cliche. No cursory analysis shows that Staal brings "value" with his actual play

Signing Brassard to play over Strome is like buying a hyundai because you hate your kia... They are effectively the same car with different badges
well…its also a 93 Kia you're moving on from for an 87 Hyundai with a lot of wear n tear and an engine knock.

Holik, Drury, Redden, Richards, Nash, Shattenkirk. Of course, some are better than others, but Trouba checks off every box as far as being that type of acquisition.
The one difference is that Trouba is 25. Still young. That's the Rangers thinking. Is that worth an extended contract for 8 mil a year? Hell no. Not based on one good year it's not.

Those metrics are skewed because the team's D was atrocious. He had no help. You need five guys to play D. I'll take the coaches point of view who leaned on him as the season progressed any day over some metrics.

This thread sucks now. Awesome stuff.

Let's get these two RFAs signed and start the season so people can S.T.F.U. until our first two-game skid.

If it makes everyone feel better, I'm more than happy to wait until we actually lose a game to spell out every reason we lost, not that losing really matters a ton this year.

In fact, I haven't said anything all summer. Then one more mildly stupid and relatively meaningless thing broke my Rongos threshold.

Expect a lot of skids. With an influx of youngsters this team will need to learn how to play defense. That's what wins games in the NHL. These kids will need to learn to bust their butts backchecking and playing well in their own zone.

My boat is sinking. There's 4 tiny holes. And then there's a gaper that Marc Staal blew open with a f***ing shotgun. I can't blame Marc Staal, though. There's 5 holes.

I mean generally speaking, I think the vast majority of the board understands our flaws and will be capable of identifying why we lose on their own. They probably don't need to be told.
