ANOTHER Drury GEM

NOT signing Lindgren as the backup.

Cheaper. Better. Younger. A Lindgren.

Absolutely braindead
Maybe Lindgren thought he would get more games in Washington than in New York behind Igor. If I was Lindgren I would have signed with Washington too. He had a much better path to ice time in Washington. Don’t think you can blame Drury for that one

Drury went the rental route last year. I think this year he is going to be looking for players with term to add to team. Tampa found great success adding players with term on good contracts/with retention. Same with Pitt in 2016. I think that is the way to go, not Kane, and I think Drury knows that.
I think most everyone would agree that would be the preferred route. With that said the team is close to beating capped out as is. $80,833,158. Currently with approx $1,616,842 in projected space.

They have $3,427,778 coming off in dead cap space (Shatty, GerardI, DeAngelo)

They have another $4,525,000 in expiring UFA contracts. (Vesey, Blais, Harper, Halak)

So they free up $7,952,778, but will need to pay a backup. And who knows what Drury does with Blais?

In RFA’s they have 6 active roster players that need to be re signed.
Chytil
Lafreniere
Kravtsov
Miller
Gauthier
Hajek

That’s going to chew up the remaining cap space real quick. So “If” Drury gets a player with term that would have to mean Salary going out. All of the big salaries nave NMC’s.

From a money situation, it’s likely Drury adds a rental player or two using the picks and maybe even one or two of the expiring RFA’s.

Chytil has been fantastic. It feels like he has been here forever, yet he just turned 23. Pacing 20 goals, 50+ points on less than 15 a night and zero PP time. I don't know what Drury's plan will be to manage the cap this summer, but Chytil has been moving up the totem pole of importance rather significantly.

Then why would he sign for 3 years at backup rates? Wouldn't he be looking for a 1-2 year deal

I don’t know, try asking him. I‘m not his agent. Some people want multiyear security. Why didn’t he sign with one of the other 30 teams.?. The goalie market is always weird anyway. Either way, we can only go off what he signed. There’s no literally no evidence that he wanted a 1-2 year deal, because he didn’t sign one. There is plenty to blame Drury for, this isn’t one of those things. You are making up a fantasy here. Also it’s hard to say that he made the wrong choice

It's interesting bc you hear stories of players taking less money per year to get more years on 1 way deals, especially players that have bounced up and down a lot. Guys want the years to get some stability. Sometimes I think we forget they have families and personal lives that require it. Sometimes it isn't all about money. Some guys are content making an NHL salary and not chancing it for some big cash in. I don't think the backup job to Igor is overly desirable, not a lot of pt and a lot of pressure to now drop off performance wise. Also we rarely hear about it but I wonder how Igor and halak interact, what kind of relationship they have. That goes a huge way with a tandem. Just look at georgiev and Igor last year. We laughed at the spite for georgiev but maybe they just wanted the established vet who could be a calming presence to Igor and would be content with his 20 starts to the vezina winner.

It might be possible that Lindgren didn't want to come here. Maybe he saw more opportunity on the Caps with Kuemper than on the Rangers with Igor. Maybe Drury was only offering 1 year deals because they see Garand with the big club next year and Washington signed Lindgren to a 3 year deal that Drury didn't want to go that far with term.

I wanted Lindgren too but we don't know what Lindgren wanted.

Just have to keep our fingers crossed he can stay healthy, that has been a problem for most of his career and usually regresses a bit after a bunch of games off. If he can stay healthy we are seeing how dangerous he can become.

The Rangers don't have the cap space to even think about that much less the asinine hypothetical TDL. If the Rangers are entertaining anything at this point, and they really shouldn't be given how the season has been going, it's adding vet LD on the cheap a la Justin Braun. We don't need another pass first forward. We don't need a past his prime forward who is a shell of what he used to be. We don't need to sacrifice either of our 1st's in a generational draft for a rental. They've got a spare 4th and 5th in 2025. Trade that.
Sadly the rangers are probably going to have a pretty decent war chest by the time the deadline comes along.

You start by talking about his thought process now you dont know? LOL

Why would he want to play in New York with his brother? They hate eachother, I'm making it up... It's fantasy.. He saw a better chance playing with Keumper

your point was countered and you have nothing.

I’ve been a Halak fan for a while and I hope he can pull himself out of his record so far this season, but maybe Greiss would have been the better signing.

With Chytils emergence and Miller and Laf needing raises I have no idea what the hell you do with the roster. Something is going to have to give with Panarin or Kreider.

I like Trocheck a lot, but it’s looking like it would’ve be been better to sign a vet to a short term contract that could play 2 or 3C.

There’s going to be some really difficult decisions in the summer.

The kids are the heart and soul of this team. They came out flat, zero shots on goal, then GG put the kid line back together and it all changed. Kakko gets the GTG, Chytil with the GWG. Time to hand over the keys.

I would have given him that same contract. I assume that was the sticking point for Drury. Either way, if Drury wanted Lindgren, he would have signed him

All things being equal, playing with your brother would put it over the top

Handing over the keys shouldn't necessarily mean keeping the kid line together though. The line is really driven by Chytil when he is on his game. Future is with him, whoever he plays with. He needs more time on ice. Just because we are paying Trocheck doesn't mean he automatically should be getting 2nd line minutes. And I like Trocheck.

Fair points. I have a feeling at least 2 of those RFAs wont be here, possibly 3. Laf is getting the Kakko contract.

Miller might get somewhere around the Samuelsson contract. Though I doubt he signs for 7 or 8 years. Maybe 5 or 6 at the most if he even wants to go that route.

That leaves Chytil. Playing well, still not sure if he is a center and cant seem to find a partner in crime. Somewhere in the 4s if he is resigned seems likely.

Jones is also an RFA, but I am not sold he will be here. I am not sure any of Krav, Goat, Hajek and Jones will be here.

By my calculations, assuming these numbers are close and depending on who is kept, the Rangers need a bottom pairing D and a RW with 2.5 to 3.5 million in cap space. This is, also, not factoring in the 4 million cap increase, which I think will happen as well as filling in the roster with guys already on contracts. (E.G. Othmann, Cuylle, Brod, Robertson, Domingue)

I believe Vesey will be resigned. He has been good and will be cheap.

As for D, a guy like Edmundson could be a good target. Good price if there is retention, likely not expensive to acquire and good for the bottom pair for the next 2 years.

It’s almost like Edge forewarned this already…

So when does our genius coach try something different on the PP? We are 17th.

Maybe mix up the lines a little and try to get laff and/or Kakko into PP1? Or maybe chytil?

We can always go back to the current PP setup, but maybe we can find a better combo?

Did you watch the game last night?
Our pp was 50% and was absolutely dominant on the one that failed to score.
You don’t mess with that.

I want the kids on the pp, but pp1 has been showing they deserve the time right now.

Our PP could be 30% and number one in the league and people would still clamor for changes to get Kakko/Laf/Chytil on to PP1.
