Admitting you made a mistake would be the more honorable reply
I did....I said sure. You can't deny that Mika not being able to hit the broad side of the barn until after the new year was all that was wrong with our pp to start the year last year and that our playoff numbers were closer to our post new year norm than the total season numbers.

You can’t deny, either, that the Rangers have hit the post more than any team in the league (through their last game anyway). Cherry picking this or that can go either way. From what I’m seeing, Strome didn’t make much of a difference and teams are definitely keying on Mika and Panarin this year. Something needs to change at the right bumper - ie… a left handed shot would be nice.

I disagree, it was obvious last year when Strome was out the pp fell apart too, he gets a lot of grief here but he was a helpful key on that pp because he was a great passer too, when lanes weren't there for Panarin or Fox he was able to find them from his spot, it helped keep things spread out. Trochek is a downgrade from Strome on the pp and as a player who plays well with Panarin, it's not to say we can't ever have a great pp again without Strome, we just need to try someone different because Trochek imo isn't helping like Strome did, could Lafreniere do something there? We don't know because they won't give him reps there, maybe Kravtsov too but that's an entirely different story.

The last time I checked, a week or so ago, the Ducks with PP superstar Strome were hovering around 14%. I’ll agree to disageee. Trocheck is an upgrade to Strome nearly everywhere and Panarin needs to figure out how to make it work with anyone not named Strome.

The Trochek signing was less about the PP and more about every other facet of the game. Trochek is a play-driver. He is a much better transporter of the puck and his speed and tenacity on the puck add an element to the forward group that it needs more of. He's on pace for 50 points with a FO% of ~56.5% while playing through some sort of injury.

Also, and this doesn't get discussed enough here, Trochek on his deal @ $5.625m cap hit is a low key steal moving forward. Just wait until either this off-season or next and see what some of those guys will be getting. Guys who are NOT better players than Trochek.

Chytil and Panarin are doing fine at 5v5.

The ducks are the worst team in the league, what's your point? I hope you aren't trying to imply that I'm saying Strome is some sort of pp guru are you? Because that's obviously not what I'm saying, he was a good fit on OUR pp. Trochek is an upgrade in faceoffs, physical play and more in the north south game. He's a downgrade as a center for Panarin, and on our pp. His contract is nice though i agree, but he wasn't brought here to be a 3c which is where he is now, and maybe if he wants top 6 mins he has to figure out how to fit with Panarin.

Let me reword that
He was brought in to fix our center depth problem, which he does.
The fact that Chytil has taken a massive step forward doesn’t change the fact that we are now 3 deep on centers.
Instead of celebrating what’s a good thing, we’re complaining that we’re probably paying an extra million for a 2c at 3c.

At the same time, everything Kreider touched was going in the net. We all knew that wasn't happening again. This team was playing better hockey to start this year than they did all last year. Our playoff performance kind of made people forget how terrible we looked 97% of that regular season.

And honestly, if there is a position to overpay slightly to have very good depth, it's center...

I don't disagree, the pp and goaltending hid a lot of 5 on 5 faults. However the solutions are in house imo, the kids need more minutes to become top 6 players, Kravtsov included. Our playoff performance was dictated by playing terrible goalies basically, if you go to youtube and watch the goals from the playoffs there are a ton of stinkers.

The debate isn't over center depth or centers at all it's about whether we keep bumping our head on the wall playing Trochek on pp1 or give Laf an honest shot there.

And I’m saying the difference between 25 and 22% is a couple of Trocheck posts away from being exactly the same and there is a negligible difference between him and Strome. If anything has been detrimental to the PP it’s a lack of options and teams are wise to what the Rangers are trying to do.

Again, I agree to disagree.

I don't really like Laf or Kakko in the bumper spot and GG seems to prefer Chytil there if something ever happens to the bumper on pp1. I think ppl dislike Trocheck on pp1 because he's keeping the kids off pp1 not because of his play on pp1. He seems way more active and more of a threat than Strome ever did in that position. Also, Panarin is in the spot where the kids would probably mesh in the best and find some success with pp1 and good luck bumping Panarin off that spot.

I like the $2.6M value. Other players are paid less than they are worth. Kane is overpriced by about nearly $8M. Those projection numbers are too high.

If I were running shit, I would do the following:

1. I'd find ways to play the kids in all situations. I'd give them a ton more responsibility. I'd have Laf on PP1. I'd have Kakko, Kravtsov and Chytil on the PK. I'd even figure out how to get Laf on the PK. I'd have Kravtsov in the damn lineup. I'd have Jones in the lineup. I'd roll with their mistakes as much as possible.

2. I would demand defensive accountability. You can miss as many offensive chances as you want, but if your line repeatedly loses coverage or makes multiple mistakes managing the puck in our half of the ice, then your line will take a shift off. This concept works best if your finding more ice for the kids in all situations. If they're only playing 5v5, then this kind of punitive action becomes a net negative on the kids getting ice. I'd also only make it one shift... unless the problem persists. That rule goes for EVERYONE. I'd bench the whole line as opposed to a player so the team as a whole starts taking more responsibility for each other. D might work slightly differently as it becomes a little too taxing to roll two pairs.

3. I'd look to make tweaks to the system so that we become harder to score against and so we protect our own netfront. Make Igor's job easier. We have one of the best goalies in the world, if we limit the traffic in front of him and limit high danger chances, we win most nights. Full stop.

4. I'd find ways to reward players who score in the blue paint. And the same goes for keeping opposition from feeling comfortable in our blue paint.

This might mean we are middling for a while, but I bet by end of this season, some of the kids will take off and will lead us into the future with a stronger, younger core.

Well, listen, as someone who is on the Hell No to Kane train, I take these numebrs with a huge grain of salt.

He is playing on a terrible team, knowing he is going to get moved for possibly one more chance to win a cup by the deadline. He has a very long proven track record. I think it's a very fair argument to say he is not nec putting himself in difficult spots on the ice. He's also not playing with a decent supporting cast, which would suggest he'd need to double or triple his efforts to have similar output or success compared to the past. So, these numbers are gonna look pretty poor I think. He's basically playing an extended pre-season.

That said, he is not young anymore. He may need to conserve energy regardless of what the team situation is. Can he or will he do the little things to help a team get over the hump? Does he have that in his game at this point? Fair questions. But the business of Patrick Kane is right now in the front seat to Patrick Kane the hockey player. And that is for sure unnerving to any acquiring team. He will be dealt for a lot based on his past accomplishments. This is the kind of player that has traditionally come to NY and has been mediocre but the large swath of NYR fans that only care about marquee names they've heard of will get excited and will buy tix and jerseys. If the Rangers trade for Kane, 90% chance its because the business of the team is overriding the hockey.

This whole put Kane back with Panarin crap is such a video game move it's ridiculous. But all that said, take the numbers above with a giant grain of salt.

With teams close to the cap, that is not always a guarantee. Surprises has happened before.
There's 18 teams in front of them right now: ANA, CHI, SJ, CBJ, ARI, PHI, OTT, STL, BUF, VAN, WSH, MTL, NSH, CGY, FLA, MIN, COL, LA.

Most of them have the cap space and contract slots available to take him and would utilize him better than we can right now. His main asset for NSH at his peak was being their shooting option from the LW on PP1; he obviously will not get that role here.

The Rangers already have one winger buried in their depth chart that should be an every day player for them. Getting Kravtsov back into the lineup should be their main priority.

No reason Brozinski is playing. Put Goodrow there and Kravtsov back at RW problem solved
