I would find it hard to believe he would get the contract he has right now if he were a free agent. A lot of times that's how I like to judge value of a player based on the contract they have: if that same player was a UFA right now, what kind of contract would they get and what kind of cap hit. I don't believe that any team would be willing to pay a 31-year-old finesse play making winger 11.6 million a year, hell how many teams have 11.6 million in cap space?
well yeah obviously…

It doesn't mean any of that. Regardless of how they have played, Jones so far on the year is a -1 at 5v5 and Hajek is a zero. Whether it's sustainable or not is besides the point but in their games so far this year the Rangers have had better results, on the scoreboard, when Hajek was on the ice than Jones. And I'm not saying this is predictive of anything going forward at all but the reason they have a better record with Jones in the can not be attributed to the play of Jones/Hajek. Hajek also has better expected goal numbers than Jones does this year regardless.

The +/- and xG data are good points.

My impression is the analytics vary a little bit depending on where and how you look at them. For example, as Vince highlighted here, according to Moneypuck.com, Schneider's xGF was significantly higher with Jones than Hajek.

I think it would probably more accurate to say that the expected goal figures range from saying Jones and Hajek have been similar to saying Jones has been materially better.

The impact on the game obviously goes beyond just what happens on the scoreboard when they are on the ice too. For example, if you start a shift in the defensive zone, make a good breakout pass, and end the shift in the offensive zone so that the next line starts there, there's a positive impact that isn't accounted for on the scoreboard. Similarly, if you start a shift in the offensive zone, turn the puck over, and end the shift in the defensive zone, or start the shift in the defensive zone and can't break it out, that similarly has an impact. I think those examples are particularly apt, bc managing the puck is something that Hajek really struggles with and that Jones is good at.

I think sending Jones down is completely reasonable. He hasn't been good and Gallant doesn't seem to value his style of play. It's the wanting to play Hajek more that is really hard for me to understand.

I don't want the people in charge of the team to run around like chickens with their heads cut off when they see some things aren't going well, but I wouldn't endorse the "wait 'til Will Cuylle gets here!" approach either. If they play out the season, and they still get next to nothing out of the top young players who are already here, the organization is in deep shit.

@Zero Way Center it's not about only Cullye or one prospect.

It's about depth and trickle down.

You have Othmann/Cullye/Berard/Edstrom/Sykora/Grubbe and others like BMB/Barbashev/Chlemar/Laba/Karpa who are lesser knowns.

Of this group you would hope 1-2 can claim roster spots every year as contributing NHLers on ELCs who can develop skill sets and be useful.

It allows roles to be filled and spend money in other areas. It creates depth.

Washington and St. Louis found players in later rounds that led to Cups.

Tampa found guys in mid rounds.

So it's not about Cullye as the savior. It's about Cullye becoming an energy grinder who can PK and be physical, Othmann starting as a middle six winger with sandpaper, Edstrom PKing and partnering with Gauthier to be part of a very fast depth line, etc, etc. etc.

THEN they go out and spend extra money on a bottom pair DMan.

I'm far more nervous about James Dolan losing money in his businesses and the effect it will have on his desire to win this season than almost anything else. The rebuild, whatever you think of it, may be going in total reverse. If they end up trading for Patrick Kane and giving away meaningful young assets when teh team clearly has lots of issues, it would be a) so Rangers b) the beginning of the end of the idea that we might actually build a competitive team for years to come.

The Salary Cap is designed to prevent the 1998-2004 Rangers.

In the unlikely chance they go full old, they'll be forced to find guys on ELCs.

The 2005-06 to present NHL is more similar to the modern NFL where the NHL prior was like MLB.

...and then we traded Kakko for Kane.

Dolan will meddle in the Knicks business before the Rangers again

Both of the teams are underperforming/bad right now but the Knicks are his #1 child

It’s not like Jones really did much to warrant keeping him up. Let him keep working on his game down there with 20 minutes.

What is the rush in bringing up Harpur? Send Jones down and keep 6D. If there is a need, call up someone then. It’s a simple waste of cap space.

Also, if the next forward up is Brodzinski then waive Carpenter.

Because if someone gets hurt in warmups then they have 5D for the game?

Tell you what, if you’re not listening to Staple and Vally’s podcast you’re really missing something. Vally’s stats and takes are invaluable in trying to understand this team.
Good lookin’ out. I will check it out. Thank you.

If you listen to the guys on the Boston Bruins talk about Bergeron...

The captain doesn't always matter but sometimes there are true leaders.
Good point. By that measure the rangers really do not have a captain. At least from what I can tell.

I'm a Zac Jones fan.. him, along with a few other players are not playing with the same confidence right now. I don't mind him going down there and getting some minutes. He does not look as good as when he originally came up. It sucks that we don't have many options, Jones has been shakey and Hajek isn't very good

Does this team have one... ONE, A-type/alpha personality?
we have EMO soft Mika and players too scared to speak English to the press. Pretty sad. Not talking Igor talking about Panarin who has been in the NHL much longer. Some leader. Pathetic.

this is a team consisting of people being paid millions upon millions of dollars and their JOB is to bring New York it's first sports championship in years. THAT is what they are employed to do. This entire group has become complacent swimming in their own shit and at this point they aren't just swimming, now it's freediving in said shit with smiles on their faces because there are camera's all pointed at them. What types of players perpetuate and advocate the whole circus act? Reaves. These players aren't supposed to be modern day jesters for Instagram ra ra they are professional athletes and they need to get their heads out of their f***ing asses if they want to stay all cozy in NYC and maintain having a job in this market.

REAL New York Hockey is not dead and lost
there is always a way
