I think I prefer sticking to the rental route with Tarasenko as the top 6 acquisition preference. And if that starts to fall through, depending on if the price has come down, I would consider Kane. Acquiring Meier, for as good as he is, seems like it is going to require a lot of moving parts in multiple ways.

Tarasenko/Kane
Barbashev
Motte
Vet D

Out:

Hajek
Leschyshyn
Gauthier (maybe)
Kravtsov/Jones (maybe)

And then no more Brodzinski on the roster.

Panarin-Zib-Tarasenko
Lafreniere-Chytil-Kakko
Kreider-Trocheck-Barbashev
Vesey-Goodrow-Motte
Blais

Looks pretty stacked. That 4th line can score and defend. Tank would hopefully put that first line over the top.

Blais is back up. Cuylle is headed up too. 14 forwards. Likely means someone is the odd man out. Maybe - if Erne passes through waivers - he is dealt at 50% for Blais and a small add - as they can then send him down accruing a bit more space? Would put the Rangers at over $7 M as their available deadline space. Every bit counts

I get the frustration in Panarin’s refusal to adjust to clogged lanes and his giveaways, plus a generally lackluster postseason.

But this player has ALWAYS played with a chip on his shoulder and responded with glowing marks to adversity. Read a little about him, he’s not some country club guy. He knows he can be better and I think he absolutely will be.

He’s one of if not the best passer in the game. Dumping him in a salary trade is not realistic.

Decline is not age related IMO. It's money and lifestyle related

Someone needs to put pressure on him. Let Drury be the bad guy.
Money and lifestyle are byproducts of age. You get older, you’ve got more scratch in the bank and you live large. I think Drury is definitely putting pressure on him after last year. At some point, it’s produce or perish.

is he though?

He started out great but quickly fell back to mediocrity. Maybe Panarin didn't see the 'rumblings' about Drury not being happy in the offseason? Maybe a leaked story to Brooks to start a media frenzy to help ruffle some feathers?

He needs pressure.

He needs someone to tell him his farts are not as great as he thinks they are.....

or that this team is not going to win with him playing like this.... so, like you said... produce or perish... Either be worth the price tag or we'll find a better use for the $11.6M of cap space

I truly believe he will waive if he 'feels' he's not wanted. Drury will have to be the bad guy

Drury is not telling you or me anything. The person hearing it is Artemi.

I don’t think he’s lost the will to win. I think, like Rick Nash before him, he suffered a physical injury that has and will continue to cause him to have that mental block that will limit his effectiveness for the rest of his career and especially keep him from being any kind of factor in the playoffs.

Panarin is too comfortable. He has a full NMC. He thinks no one can touch him.

And why would we trade a productive player? More importantly you are speculating that the supposed young replacements turn the corner and start producing at a similar pace. At this point you can't really make that call.
The Rangers will need to move out money in the future. Do you really believe the Rangers are winning with Panarin, Kreider and Zibamejad as their main three forwards sucking up all of the TOI and playing in every situation?

Panarin comes down to this; 1. Is he starting that long slow decline? The numbers certainly raise that possibility. 2. Is he going to be productive in the playoffs? Drury was not happy last year. He would be even more so if this happened again this year.
What happens when Panarin has another listless playoff performance? Drury didn't sign him. Drury should force a confrontation. Leak his name to the media. The Rangers wouldn't mind moving on from Panarin and there are a few teams interested.

The return of Staalsie?

If they are looking for snarl on the back end, Radko Gudas is an interesting one if the Panthers become sellers. Marc Staal might be in play — though the Blueshirts might have an interest in a reunion with No. 18.

Brooks was writing about the Devils and he mentioned the Rangers with the Staal.

Hughes is lucky the Devils won the lottery. He would be playing on the third line as a wing on the Rangers. Everyone would be asking what's wrong with Hughes. Why can't the Rangers develop first line forwards? The Devils do have not anyone blocking Hughes. The Rangers have a million forwards playing ahead of their young guys. The Rangers cater to them because of their contracts.

In December at the board of governors meeting, Bettman indicated the salary cap might not rise by more than $1 million for next season (it’s currently $82.5 million). Apparently, not much has changed since then and Daly didn’t indicate it was a front-burner issue right now. “There’s really no change in our projections from where they were in December,” he said. “It remains the same and we have not engaged with the players’ association on that specific issue.”
