Lebancs track record is concerning. He's exactly the kind of player who would get here and revert to what put him in San Jose's doghouse for three years.

Its a truism, but I'm not convinced it's true anymore. As you point out, the league is getting younger at an accelerating rate, and it's just unheard of for players picked in the slots Kakko and Lafreniere were picked to be given roles and usage like they were. Its not a development league, but teams are more and more willing to accept losses in return for giving young talent opportunity. Colorado had one of the worst seasons of all time with MacKinnon, Rantanen, and landeskog at the top of their roster.

Did I miss when Labanc was in their doghouse? He has always kind of a been a nice glue, high energy guy from my recollection

Honestly depending on the price, Puljujarvi could be a decent deadline add for the bottom 6. Could always flip him in the off-season, and considering EDM is trying to clear cap I can’t imagine he costs a fortune.

Still not opposed to this

I don't know if Labanc would be the right guy to target. There are a couple of marks against him. The first is that he has another year on his contract at 4.75m and we need all the cap space we can get this offseason. We're already talking about dumping or buying out Goodrow for space. The second is that he seems like he would be another pass-first player on a team full of over-passers.

Dadonov might be the better fit. He's a pending UFA. He's more of a shooter. He's been a goal scorer in the NHL before. He's having a down year in Montreal, so he should be fairly cheap to acquire. He might be good fit with Panarin, but then you would need to have Trocheck or Goodrow in the middle so someone on that line plays defense.

Labanc and Ritchie would be great adds. Forces out Blais, gives an NHL level RHS on PP2, and slots Goodrow on the 4th line where he should be

Kreider-Zib-Kakko
Panarin-Chytil-Kravtsov
Lafreniere-Trochek-Labanc
Vesey-Goodrow-Ritchie
Gauthier

Just need a defenseman to force out Hajek/Harpur

The problem with you guys is you know how to get cised but you don't know how to stay cised. Always looking for the next one.

As far as rental's go, I am very intrigued by Gavrikov. There are an abundance of rental type forwards available; I dont think it will be too difficult to add 2 that will fit our needs for reasonable costs. On D, the market is underwhelming and we have almost no depth. 1 injury and Harpur and/or Hajek are playing in playoff games.

Gavrikov would be the ideal partner for Schneider. He has good size and plays a solid defensive game. I dont believe that adding a scrap heap D like Braun, Beaulieu or Holden (who i like) is enough to insulate the D core from the attrition that comes in the playoffs. We were extremely lucky to get through the playoffs last year without major injuries, and when Lindgren went down briefly we were a circus act in our own zone. Trouba is playing hurt already. Gavrikov is the type of guy who is a sturdy top 4 D, but is an embarrassment of riches as a 3rd pair guy, allowing us to spread out the ES & PK Ice time throughout the 3 pairs and keep everyone fresh as possible.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but Id be willing to send CBJ one of Jones/Robertson (their NHL defense is disgraceful) and a 2nd that can become a 1st if we reach a certain point in the playoffs. Throw in a lesser prospect that JD wants if need be. It would be a straight rental, but I think he could quietly be a difference maker for us. It also doesnt hurt that he is a close friend of Panarin.

Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Gavrikov-Schneider

I think any decision on a d-man being brought in needs to consider the fact that Trouba SHOULD get some time off to get healthy. If the team feels a week or two off will get him back to normal than I am not a fan of trading such a high pick for a 3rd pairing d-man. Especially with the emergence of Schneider.

The other thing I would like to see in short order is either Emberson or Scanlin in the NHL to see where they are at.

Cost too high for UFA

My theory is that Trouba is going to battle through it, because the alternatives are a non-starter, and then he will have surgery and be LTIR'd to start next season. My concern stems mainly from the fact that if we lose a guy early in the playoffs and have to play a guy like Nick Holden above his station, well, we know how that movie ends. Having those 3 pairs with Gavrikov allows you to trust your backline no matter the situation.

The thing with Lafreniere that blows all of this up is that he hasn't shown flashes of being better than anyone in front of him - even with some looks on the top line and the PP. It's not like he's languishing on the 4th line and playing seven minutes a night. He's playing fifteen. FIFTEEN against the other team's 3rd best offering most of the time and he hasn't scored in 16 games. He's on pace for EIGHT goals. There has been nothing there for a month and a half. They should send him to the Pack for two weeks and, if the talent is there, let him light the AHL on fire and come back with renewed confidence.

This whole "developmental" argument would make a whole lot more sense if Lafreniere were tantalizing you with bits and pieces of what might be. He hasn't.
Truer words have never been spoken. My sentiments exactly. I'm not ready to give up on Laf, but there's not much there to get excited about and my eye balls don't lie.

The problem is he's no longer that player.

He was that player in year 1 here. His game started to change/deterioate since Covid.

Elliotte Friedman talked about Toews and Meier today on Marek's show. He said some teams told him Toews will cost a 2nd or 3rd with double retention needed. Elliotte speculated Meier could be the first guy to go. SJ will allow a team to negotiate with Meier if they find a deal they like. It doesn’t sound like SJ is looking for a rental deal for Meier. $10M qualifying offer. Marek was off today. Marek's producer hosted the show. Matt Marchese. He said Meier could be making more AAV than the $10M QO.

Any reasoning given? I wonder if he has asked for a trade or if they are keeping him out to be ready for a trade
He's not gelling with Quinn.

“Something that happened a little earlier in the season and when he came back, he was outstanding for us for a long stretch,” the San Jose Sharks bench boss said this morning. “So the ebbs and flows of the season, teams go through it, individuals go through it. Just need him to be a little bit more consistent. Overall, in a lot of aspects.”

Labanc will be back in soon. He’s sixth on the San Jose Sharks with 25 points and tied for fifth with Nico Sturm with 10 goals.
What is Quinn looking for from Labanc?

“When he’s on his game, there’s a swagger to him. There’s an edge to him. He makes life hard on the other team. Makes good decisions,” Quinn offered. “There was a guy who was playing at a pace, with an edge, who was responsible in all three zones. Made an impact shift in and shift out. There’s been moments where that’s happened, but just not consistently.”

Kind of hard to be that guy when your team sucks? dont want to make excuses for him but our guys our like that regardless

IF he was getting paid $11M would he get scratched?

TBH David Quinn would have been a great assistant coach here

Agreed. I've said all along he needs the "conditioning" stint.

I dont know how they fit the contract but I could see LaBanc galvanized by coming back home to a contender

This. There's nothing THERE to develop.

Again, what is he supposed to be good at? Not skating... not shooting... not defense... what? He doesn't win board battles... he doesn't show exemplary vision... where's the stuff we need to "develop" in him?

Yeah his thing was hands and playmaking ability.

Positive draft projections had him as an 70-90 point winger. Huberdeau was a common comparison.

But his hands haven’t been there and neither has the execution on his passing plays- which I think has changed his habits as a player for every worse.

It’s like a QB getting sacked too much early- you develop bad habits

Not sure. He was supposed to be back in yesterday and then they decided to scratch him again. He was also a healthy scratch in an October game coincidentally against the Rangers.

Well, that's that! Roll credits. The experts have spoken! He'll never break 5 goals in his career, 19 EV goals last year was fake news, let's pack it up. Nothing to see here. Hahahaha.
