@Machinehead makes a sobering point about the lack of cap space around the league right now.

Even if the NYR want to force the issue with one of their big contracts, who is taking them? Would have to be a mostly money in / money out situation.

If it’s a $1M cap increase next year this may be when the cap crunch becomes a full on brick wall.
1. ) It will not happen
2.) if it did happen, it'd be in the offseason

I don't know why it's even being considered. Only way Panarin leaves is after another poor Playoffs performance and Drury goes Kravtsov 2.0 on him and calls him out.

Even then, the only team that could possibly make sense is Anaheim or by some miracle Florida, if they can get rid of Bob. Panarin for Reinhart possibly?

There's a major difference in that. Crosby is great at it but he's not limited to it and standing in front of the net.

He's not being treated like he's Jed Ortmeyer

Fully 100% agree with you there

Hopefully we still have two picks in the 2023 draft and who knows maybe more(?)
Would hope the organization takes a long look at Will Smith.

He'll be gone well before we pick. Top 7 is my guess.

We often talk of Boston being a possible landing spot for Kreider due to various reasons but what if Boston was a landing spot for Panarin? The Rangers could take back Hall. Boston would probably be interested in a Panarin-_____-Pastrnak line.
Boston is in a tough spot next year, especially if the cap only goes up 1 mil. Their cap ceiling will be reduced by up to 4.5 mil because of the Bergeron and Krejci bonuses. They're projected to have about 21.8 mil in cap space, but that will end up being 17.3 mil after the bonuses are deducted.

Both Bergeron and Krejci need new contracts, and Pasta will cost 11-12 mil. There's no chance they are going to be looking to add another winger making 11.6 mil.

I bet you could actually get serious assets too.

If the Rangers don't get to the Cup finals or at least the conference finals, I hope they take a good long look at themselves and realize that moving money out and more assets/prospects in, is the way to go. The Kreider/Panarin/Trouba/Zibanejad core will have reached the end of it's short, short road.

Move 2-3 of those guys, free up boatloads of cash, get big time assets back in, let Zibanejad be the vet of the forward core moving forward, build around a ridiculous defense featuring Fox, Miller, and Shesterkin, turn the kids loose on offense (and get a few more) and go, go, go.

No team has any cap space to sign their own players but Trouba, Panarin & Kreider are going to waive their NMCs AND were getting assets in return? Was the cap abolished?

Moving Panarin is the only way out. If Laf was having a breakout year instead of stagnating, we wouldn't even have a choice. Trouba is obviously overpaid and becoming redundant but he's the captain and his intangibles are something the team values. He also has personal ties to NYC through his wife's work. Id love to move him but it's really really ulikely.

Drury will put the screws to Panarin if he no-shows down the stretch and in the playoffs. It would not shock me if he is already looking into it in advance of the offseason.

There's not much that can be done.

Every team but the Bedard frontrunners are OUT of cap space and even some of them are as well.

The league is swallowing itself in a void of unsustainability.

Jakub Vrana is objectively an NHL player sitting in the AHL because nobody could afford him, and he's just the first domino of many that's going to fall.
This is why I think it will be a strong buyers market this trade deadline. Bang for the buck for the teams with deadline space. Drury has a strong rental hand. I think he can gain an asset or two w/out emptying the cupboard of picks or prospects.

Also wondering how next years UFA class will effect the deadline.

Significant UFA class. Alot more names but just a bunch below. Team w/out cap are going to be out of the running on some of the below.

Wonder if this will change the thinking of some of the higher end players. Like, a Pat Kane. Would he do a one year deal at a really small cap hit with a contender for a shot at another cup? An Eric Staal type of deal?

Pastrnak
Larkin
Bertuzzi
Kuzmenko
Horvat
Dumba
Kane
Toews
Domi
Gustafsson
Schenn
Graves
Gavrikov
Soucy
Krejci
Sheary
Tarasenko
O'Reilly
Barbashev
van Reimsdyk
Klingberg
Monahan
Nyquist
Killorn
Gostisbehere
Compher
Kerfoot
Haula

Greenway has 2 more years @ 3 mil. How are we fitting that?

It takes 5 seconds to look up the numbers on CapFriendly.

If Minnesota retained Id be interested. They are already in cap hell though so I doubt it happens. Greenway is the exact type of nasty player we need. He's having a bad year but he is massive and has been an effective cog on one of the leagues best lines. Also originally from way upstate NY. Attitude issue being the reason he may be on the way out is a concern though.

Man, I’m starting to get excited about these Meier rumors. I love that player type, and that player specifically. If we could somehow parlay Panarin into him I think that solves multiple roster construction problems.

Not happy seeing what was looking like a dynamic Chytil-Kravtsov duo get broken up after one game. Whoever they put with Panarin and Trochek will just go back to being irrelevant.

It’s tough though. I want to see Panarin/Trochek broken up but I also don’t want Panarin playing with Chytil. I guess I just really want Panarin gone.

I wouldn't get too excited. The likelihood is probably close to zero.

Yeah, I know. But it’s exactly the kind of move I’ve been pining for so it’s fun to have some hope.

I appreciate Bread for what he’s done here but I don’t think we’re winning the Cup with his contract on the books.

Getting Panarin off this team solves so many inherent problems.

Kreider-Mika-Kakko
Laf-Trocheck-Meier
Krav/Othmann-Chytil-Goodrow

Looks so much better for the present and future

Elliotte believes Horvat will be traded to Minnesota as a rental.

However, Guerin spoke to the media a few days ago. He isn’t a big rental guy. Vancouver will want a substantial deal for Horvat. Minnesota has the young assets but will Minnesota trade them for a rental they can't afford to keep?

Elliotte believes the Bruins will sign Horvat after paying Pastrnak. How? Boston couldn’t move a player to open up space this season. They assigned Mike Rellly and his $3M to the AHL. They have rotating players on long term IR this season.

Do these guys know what is going on?
