100% agreed. I really liked what they had going on and do not like this change at all.

Until they're broken up Panarin-Trochek are a toxic duo at this point. put vesey back there so they can be not-horrible defensively.

I hate Trouba on the powerplay in all aspects but I can tolerate it much more with him on the left half wall since he won't be "responsible" for holding the line or denying breakaways.
It's also probably because Gallant wants a defensive pairing out there ready to go since the second unit only gets ~30seconds of powerplay time

I mean a budget team could be someone like Seattle or Carolina or Florida. Just because they are a budget conscious team doesn't mean they have to be 'bad'.

I wouldn't call any of those budget teams. Counting guys currently on IR/Buyouts all four of the Rangers,Seattle,Carolina,Florida are spending between ~79-84M in player salaries this year.

There's no such thing as a budget team.

Every owner has endless resources and 28/32 teams have no meaningful cap space right now.

That'll be 29/32 once Buffalo has to re-sign Dahlin and Thompson.
Thompson already has his long-term extension in place to start next season: 7yrs x $7.14M

We often talk of Boston being a possible landing spot for Kreider due to various reasons but what if Boston was a landing spot for Panarin? The Rangers could take back Hall. Boston would probably be interested in a Panarin-_____-Pastrnak line.

There's not much that can be done.

Every team but the Bedard frontrunners are OUT of cap space and even some of them are as well.

The league is swallowing itself in a void of unsustainability.

Jakub Vrana is objectively an NHL player sitting in the AHL because nobody could afford him, and he's just the first domino of many that's going to fall.

Not gonna speculate why but wasn't he just in the NHL players assistance program? Maybe that unknown (combined with the risk of his decent salary) kept teams from claiming him?

But that's the point.

A team with cap space probably takes a flyer on him as he is a "free" asset.

The Vrana and a first round pick in 2021(Cossa)for Mantha trade has been a disaster for both teams. Vrana was waived out of the NHL and Mantha has been a healthy scratch. Cossa hasn’t been that great since Yzerman took him. He traded up with Dallas to select Cossa. Yzerman waived Nedeljkovic a few days ago. Did Yzerman leave his magic touch in TB? He has $8.25M in the AHL and both of those players were his acquisitions. Yzerman hasn’t signed Larkin to an extension. He didn’t like some of the contracts given to Thomas, Thompson, etc last summer. Miller got $8M. Horvat will get $8M. Larkin will get $8M. The price isn’t going down.

Bill Guerin was on Marek's show yesterday. He said the trade market is quiet.

Listen I am a Kravvy realist, no idea what he'll be yet, but Trouba on PP2 ahead of him is a f***ing disgrace. Especially in light of how he is playing. This is when you hit the gas and get him going. Having that kid buzzing would add a desperately needed additional layer of offense.

Replacing the player trouba is? or Replacing the player they want trouba to be (and was when he was healthier last year)

Trouba the player he is, is a 2-3 million dollar player.
Trouba the player they want, is a 6m dollar player.

Replacing the player he is.

Reminds me of that sad Arizona trade: Stepan (steep decline) + Raanta (always injured) for DeAngelo (decent player but somehow managed to get kicked off the team) + the Lias Andersson draft pick. We still won it? I think?

After the signing bonuses are paid this summer:

Panarin has $19m in money left for 3 years.

Kreider has $18m left for 4 years

If I was a budget team, these guys would intrigue me GREATLY

I bet you could actually get serious assets too.

If the Rangers don't get to the Cup finals or at least the conference finals, I hope they take a good long look at themselves and realize that moving money out and more assets/prospects in, is the way to go. The Kreider/Panarin/Trouba/Zibanejad core will have reached the end of it's short, short road.

Move 2-3 of those guys, free up boatloads of cash, get big time assets back in, let Zibanejad be the vet of the forward core moving forward, build around a ridiculous defense featuring Fox, Miller, and Shesterkin, turn the kids loose on offense (and get a few more) and go, go, go.

Seems like they're looking to run Trouba in the spot Zib fills on PP1, and just crank one-timers at the net
They should keep the 'same handedness' theme and add Kravtsov on the right wall so he can blast away. Trouba is useless. He does not deserve PP time.

Laffy or Kakko on the left wall QBing.

I hate that they are attempting to change the type of player Laffy is. He's not playing his best but he's also not a power forward/grinder. The cognitive dissonance within his game is evident. He doesn't know who he is or how to play anymore

I as much as troch as been good, I think he doesn’t fit with the overall scheme of pp1. He’s almost to trigger happy forcing shots. I’d move one of chytil/kk/krav up to pp1 and slide troch to z’s spot on pp2. Also is it just me or have they been forcing panarin on the right side. Last year when the pp was much better I thought they had both panarin & z setup on the left boards, this way it gave them 2 options for the one timer from that area which caused more trouble for the goalie. Iirc they tried this setup early last season and it didn’t work and then switched to both on the left wing and it started clicking.

dumbfounded.

How is Trouba on the PP unit still? Over freaking Kravtsov.

If you told me it was to troll @EdJovanovski, I'd believe you.... because that's the only way it makes any sense

Probably because PP1 will be out there for one minute and forty seconds and then we throw the kid line out there. We've been a one PP line team for a while now.

Actually i do kinda think he's a grinder. The thing is i see him more as the Crosby type grinder, where he's more of that hybrid do-everything kinda guy if all comes together. Not a Dominic Moore/Jesper Fast grinder.

Which is reason #1 why Gallant has to go, if he can't unlock Lafreniere.

There basically is nothing more important to this team.

You want to win? Then stop trying to win and start trying to develop Lafreniere.

Then you'll win without trying.

There's a major difference in that. Crosby is great at it but he's not limited to it and standing in front of the net.

He's not being treated like he's Jed Ortmeyer

@Machinehead makes a sobering point about the lack of cap space around the league right now.

Even if the NYR want to force the issue with one of their big contracts, who is taking them? Would have to be a mostly money in / money out situation.

If it’s a $1M cap increase next year this may be when the cap crunch becomes a full on brick wall.

Can Lafreniere unlock himself? I dont see how Gallant has anything to do with his issues. If anything he's giving him preferential treatment with minutes he hasnt deserved. The rest of the young forwards have shown lots of progress this season. Lafreniere is simply a year (and a summer of serious conditioning) away from looking how Kakko/Chytil do now if history is any indication
