Its mind boggling. Miller was thrown into the deep end and played extremely well, only really cratering when Trouba went out and he was asked to take on even more responsibilities. Given the state of the left side of the defense, K'Andre is probably more untouchable than Kakko
I would 100% rather move Kakko than K’Andre

Offseason plan

Gauthier to SEA in expansion
buyout Tony D (383k cap hit)

Trades

- Chytil, Reunanen, 1st round pick to SJ for Tomas Hertl
- Strome for a late 1st at the draft

Signings

Buchnevich - 5 years, 6m AAV
Bonino - 2 years, $3m AAV
Martinook - 3 years, $2.25m AAV
Brendan Smith - 1 year, $1.25m AAV to be our #7 guy

Lafreniere Zibanejad Buchnevich
Panarin Hertl Kakko
Kreider Bonino Kravtsov
Martinook Barron ______ ***

Lindgren Fox
Miller Trouba
Jones Lundkvist/Schneider
Smith

*** I think we have a collection of bottom 6 forwards on cheap 2 way deals who can fill that last spot between Rooney, Blackwell, Justin Richards, Howden (yuck), Gettinger etc.

To me, this team would be much better than this past season's group. Diversification of talent up front, adding some size and experience in vets like Martinook and Bonino, while getting someone like Barron to take on a bigger role in the bottom 6. Also leaves relative roster flexibility down the road and the opportunity to upgrade at the deadline in the event of injuries or a desire to play a heavier game.

kind of close to mine except I had Goodrow and Nosek over Martinook and Bonino because I assumed they would be cheaper.

You sign him to an extension or you dont make the trade. They can afford both Zibanejad and Hertl, why does no one think this can be done when teams who won cups did it plenty? (Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston, etc)

The Pens committed big money to Crosby, Malkin, and Letang and then built around them. The Hawks circumvented the cap to keep their team together. Only three guys signed in Boston that made over 10% of the cap on their AAV. We already have two (Panarin and Trouba) with Fox almost certainly needing that kind of money and your scenario likely adding two more to the list. Who is the last team to win a cup in the cap era with 5 players making 10% of the cap or more?

Fair point about the years.

I don't care about the dollars because I think he's an absolute gem, but few players are gems at 34.

Plus, 5-6 years from now could be when Lafreniere gets an 8-digit contract and I f***ing certainly hope he does.

Danault turning down the rumored 6/30 offer from MTL could hurt him on the UFA market. Its not like he went out there and set the world on fire points wise and im not sure who will be lining up to exceed that number in a flat cap world

I think both of those work as well. Key would be to find players who can play with an edge at both center or wing while still playing a bottom 6 role effectively (i.e killing penalties and not being a liability on the ice)

Foligno is another player that comes to mind who may be able to be had for 2-3m range. Coleman will likely price himself out but could see us being interested there too if we decide to move a winger

a young rookie sticking up for his newest NHL teammate in his first game in the NHL

I hope whoever coaches this Rangers team. if you don't stick up each other, please demand a trade.

would this happened if he was a Ranger??

He could just not wanna play in Montreal. I wouldn't.

It's a lovely town but hockey players can't shit up there without it being in the paper. In New York, he could just be Phil from 3B.

He still should do quite well, .45 PPG with his defensive skills and everything else he does well, but its interesting with a flat cap that he turned that down for sure.

Yeah I think they are looking for an upgrade at center, and then they'll look to get some size/grit (but guys who can also play) to add to the bottom 6

I need something better than "bottom six" for Kravtsov tho

What if the deal was a bottom 6 cente or LD vet, reasonable salary, eats minutes, useful grit, and adequate offense?

The deal is Kravtsov for Said player + 1st that we can draft another high level kid who can be a cheap contract to layer in say 4 or 5 years down the road?

An 10 - 32 pick plus can't miss roster player that adds what we need isn't a bad get for a kid that looks fabulous but is still unproven and at a position we have options with and depth.

The Isles didn't lift the cup though. But that system fits those players. They work together and have a combination of skill, hard work and battle. North South works if you crash the net and go to ths dirty areas. It won't work with our current top 6.

We can have success with some of the traits of playoff teams. The system is way down the list. We don't have an identity, work ethic or willingness to be physical.
Yep. The system has to fit the players or the players have to fit the system. I think the Rangers problem is that the players and system don’t match, cleanly, at least. And that falls at the feet of the FO, the coach, and the players. But it’s almost impossible to fire the whole team. Or, we’ll actually, they just did that for the past three years and what resulted is a Frankenstein’s Monster.

They will? Based on what?

Yeah while I'm relatively hopeful that Kakko will become a star player, I think we are just hoping for even from Kravtsov.

Trading Buch is more about using value to get value where it's more needed. Buchnevich is a playmaking winger. We have, like, a lot of those.

I agree, and definitely a major recipe for disaster to target players like Hyman in free agency, or at all if they played for any of the teams that gets the most attention around the league. There are many players like this around the league and they are valuable, but they get so glorified when they play on the better teams that goes deep into the POs.
Yes. We can’t afford to pay that premium, salary-wise. Got to dig a bit deeper.

I think Buch will be a sad cap casualty but it would be easier to stomach if the return was lundell.

I respect your opinion, but I am not sure it is possible for me to disagree more. Kakko is going to bust out. Miller is softer than a pallet of Charmin. I know he will get better, but the image of him skating away while an opposing player is intentionally in Shesty's face is burned in my consciousness. If he finds a spine, I will have more faith. Until then, I am just praying he doesn't turn into Tom Poti.

If Vegas can’t score and lose early in these playoffs i would think Buch would interest them.

Late last year Danault was moved to the third line with Byron and Lehkonen while Suzuki and Kotkaniemi became the top 2 centers.

Danault wasn’t happy playing a primary defensive role. He wanted to keep playing with Tatar and Gallagher. I think that was his motive for declining Bergevins contract extension.

He’s been the Habs 1C pretty much all year. I think he stays in Montreal, however, if he does hit free agency, he’d be the perfect acquisition for us.

The sudden K’Andre hate is ridiculous

There is no "sudden K'Andre hate". Wth? People are simply saying he is not the ready product, and other prospects may be better down the line. Criticism and pointing out flaws is fair game, that is how you evaluate a player. That is not "hating" on someone.
