That is more UFA deals. Why would a player who expires as a RFA want to accept an offer that lowers his QO?

This is the correct line of thinking. Use the Timo Meier contract as an example.

Timo Meier - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

$10M QO after the final year of that contract

So many guys that probably should have deals. Marleau, Sheahan, Justin Williams, MPS, Kronwall, Brouwer, Maroon, Pominville, Boyle, Thorton, Rieder, Vankek, Gardiner, etc. Some of those guys are old and slow, but a lot would normally have a deal by now. So many teams are up against the cap however, so a lot of these guys are going to struggle to get a fair deal. I didn't even list half of the decent veteran players out there.
The old, the slow, the personally over-valued

They are worth what a team is willing to pay.

Oh. I get it. I'm always the first to say, "So-and-so isn't overpaid because his contract was dictated by the market." I just find it interesting how many guys are still out there; is this going to become like baseball where no one wants to offer more than a year to older players? Physical deterioration is probably more important in hockey than baseball, so I could see it becoming even more dramatic.

All the unsigned RFAs could be the hold up

Sans-Shattenkirk glance, first time in weeks here. Can someone summarize the past 20 days of content in this thread?

As much as June and July brought an unparalleled level of momentum and enthusiasm for the season to begin, the apex was a bit drawn out with the Kreider uncertainty.

Hoping for good health and truly open competition in camp - let the best 20 make it. Preseason is one month away.

Could you imagine if the Devils sheeted ADA and/or Lemieux?

If you think about it, there has only been one deal between the two teams in like forever. It’s not like Shero has to guard against any ill will... they are already rivals.

From the players standpoint it would be an easy transition and they wouldn’t have to move. Same could be said for the Isles.

As if the rivalry wasn’t already recharged after all the additions these to teams have made over the past several months. This would really heat things up even more!

I don't think this is a one-way trend. For a few years we watched over-committed teams manage their cap in creative ways and make it work... and eventually the whole league thought they could play that game. But now there aren't enough trade partners left... the whole thing swung out of balance. I imagine it'll self correct over the next couple of seasons as teams work through the pain.

I don't think ADA or Lemieux are eligible to be offer sheeted.

oye, not again...

Yes they can

"A rival General Manager with cap space could really hurt the Blueshirts by poaching Anthony DeAngelo or Brendan Lemieux with an offer sheet.

The compensation is one reason why offer sheets are rare with the price for a star player almost unreasonable in terms of draft picks. However, if a offer sheet is for reasonable terms, so is the compensation and that is where the two New York RFA’s could be tempting targets.

The compensation for any player signed for less than $4.2 million is manageable, as illustrated below:

$1,395,053 or below: No compensation
$1,395,054-$2,113,716: 3rd round pick
$2,113,717-$4,227,437: 2nd round pick"

The threat of an offer sheet to Tony DeAngelo or Brendan Lemieux

Gorton is waiting for as long as possible so other teams have as little cap space as possible and have filled out their roster as much as possible

If an offersheet actually happened, Gorts will make the necessary moves and match the OS.

But let’s be reality here...

What kind of single cell paramecium would want to play in the bowels of the US like NJ over here?

Devils are trying to bring back Hall. They have a lot of talented young players that will be due 2nd and 3rd contracts. Do we really think Shero is going to play that offer sheet game? Even if we arent the ones who offer sheet his players, the minute you do it to another team you are opening the gate for it to happen to you.

Did Armia or Lehkonen receive offer sheets? Did anyone on Calgary get offer sheeted after they sent one to ROR? Did anyone on PHI get offer sheeted after they sent one to Weber? Did anyone on SJ get offer sheeted after they sent one to Hjalmarsson?

That's the last 10 years of offer sheets. There has not been this retaliation even one time.

The last team to offer sheet a player and then have one of their players offer sheeted was Carolina. They sent one to Fedorov in 1998. Then Montreal sent on to Aho in 2019. I do not think these are related.

Hey hey hey watch it there, lol. The other 1/4 of NJ is fantastic.
