This is pure comedy. Schrödingers Shattenkirk is a spot on descriptions. There is a nasty contract in the box, but noone knows if its bought out or still fully on the cap.

I’m sure it’s going to happen. Too much smoke around it at this point

Buying out Shatty instead of one of the other clowns is embarrassing tbh

Embarrassing because we gave him that contract only to buy him out two years later. But it's 100% the right move here.

Theoretically creating the most salary cap space would likely be the combination of buying out Shattenkirk, sending Smith to Hartford, and putting Staal on LTIR if it came to that.

That basically makes it open season for young players and the defense. I’m totally okay with that.

Everyone, our collective confuzzlement doesn't get out into the main boards, ok? It would be bad for our rep.

If reports are accurate that Buch's contract was filed after 7pm on Friday or Saturday, here's the quirk that occurred:

- The window opens 72 hours after the final contract filing/arbitration settlement.
- The window lasts for 48 hours.
- If a contract is filed after 7pm then it's deemed to have been received the next business day.

So file before 7pm on Friday/Saturday/Sunday and the 72 hour clock starts ticking immediately.
File after 7pm on Friday/Saturday/Sunday and the 72 hour clock starts ticking on Monday.

Disagree about it being the right move

I posted this the other day. Not sure if this is against the rules but I'll re-post it here as I think it's relevant to the debate:

We need to clear $5m and a Smith buyout doesn’t get us there without other moves. If the trade market for Names really isn’t there, it comes down to selling Kreider for less than market value, or buying out Shatty. I’d go with the buyout every time. We can absolutely make the cap work next year with his dead money, especially with the influx of young talent and ELCs.

If Fox isn’t ready then call up an LD and play Smith on his off side. It doesn’t matter because we aren’t looking to win this year. The team has to look 2-5 years down the road, this year and next year are just planning for that future.

Another reason to sell Kreider at the deadline for futures that might not be ready for 3-4 years. Get a mid-late 2020 1st rounder at the deadline. He can come in on an ELC at the same time Kakko needs to be paid. Attaching a bad contract to Kreider is a short term fix and is way less attractive than a Shatty buyout, even considering the dead cap.

I know this had been beaten to death, but why oh why are we buying out Shatty who has a better chance to regain value and be moved instead of the guy with the full NMC.

I know the left side depth is short but it just seems so short sighted to me, throw Smith out there, sign a journeyman, give Hajek/Lindgren a long leesh, play a righty on their off-side. A Staal buyout + maybe moving Shatty at 50% if he can rebuild value is surely better than a Shatty buyout + 100% being stuck with Staal. I don't understand this at all.

Doesn’t this just put us in a cap mess again next year at this time????

EDIT: Names, Strome, and Belesky. Nevermind, carry on.

Because they value Staal's "leadership" and "character". Nothing has changed with this org.

Okay, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, including a Shatty buyout at this point. These clowns didn't even know when the window opened, now they already know who's been bought out, even though it hasn't even opened? Come on.....turds
