I know this had been beaten to death, but why oh why are we buying out Shatty who has a better chance to regain value and be moved instead of the guy with the full NMC.

I know the left side depth is short but it just seems so short sighted to me, throw Smith out there, sign a journeyman, give Hajek/Lindgren a long leesh, play a righty on their off-side. A Staal buyout + maybe moving Shatty at 50% if he can rebuild value is surely better than a Shatty buyout + 100% being stuck with Staal. I don't understand this at all.

Maybe between bringing in Trouba and maximizing Fox and DeAngelo's development opportunities, there was no ice time for Shatty to rebuild his value.

Because they value Staal's "leadership" and "character". Nothing has changed with this org.

I really don't think that's it. I think that if we bought out Staal, there are no other moves. Nobody wants Shattenkirk at 50%, nobody wants Names. They offer us crap for Kreider because they think we're up against the cap - the trade assets we can get for him are more valuable for our rebuild than some cap space. Why do we need cap space in 2020-21 with a team that won't be ready to compete?

Plus 2.5M less of Girardi's buy-out

Right, this is another piece that people forget. Girardi's $2.5m coming off the books next year pays for half of Shattenkirk's dead cap. They'll be absolutely fine cap-wise. There's no argument where the dead cap matters, especially not in 2020-21 when our some of our best players still won't be legal enough to drink. Let them develop, by the time they do, we will have no cap issues from the buyout - not to mention the cap will be like $90m at that point anyway.

Shattenkirk was a "last kick of the can" move at the wrong time. He got injured at the worst possible time. It sucks for him personally that it didn't go well in NY, but we've got better options in the system now, so timing wise it's no big deal him going.

Saying that I'd have probably sent Smith or Staal packing first, but c'est la vie.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a 4 or 5 year deal for Kreider now

I guess one way to think about it is that although there is a ton of dead cap space next season, the Rangers essentially view Shattenkirk being on the roster as dead cap space since there isn't really a spot for him in the rotation. It saves the most cap space this season and there is still a small cap savings next season compared to not buying out anyone. The dead cap space is only really a concern in the 3rd season onwards where it's a more manageable amount.

Who's likely to sign shattenkirk at a reduced contract?
