I've been saying for weeks now that Shattenkirk was our best option for a buyout. Now it still remains to be seen if this is official, but we are now instantly cap compliant and have roster space for Fox in the event he makes the team. We can't bank on Shattenkirk to be healthy AND productive this season, it would be an expensive gamble.

Another UFA signing that blew up in our faces and didn't come close to finishing out his contract

Just wait until next summer when we actually do buy out Smith or Staal, or both. Already looking forward to the reactions

What if the trades just weren't there? What else would they do?
Buy out other players (Staal, Smith, Namestnikov), pay teams mid/late-round picks or B prospects (like Lindgren) to take on contracts (the aforementioned three and/or Strome). Trade Skjei for whatever you can get.

Hell, if we disregard sentimentality, effect on the locker room and PR it would even have been a better move to buy out Hank.

I mean, at this point it's really the only move they could make. They backed themselves into a corner by not clearing salary prior to July 1st when teams were still looking to add assets. Teams cap situations and rosters are pretty much set by this point and no one's taking on salary unless they get a sweetener. They could have bought out Staal, Smith, and/or Namestnikov but buying out only one means another move has to be made. And imagine what the cost from teams would be to help bail you out from a cap problem right before the season is in a trade.

Say what you want about trading Brady Skjei to keep Kevin Shattenkirk, it wouldn't be lazy

I would have preferred to buyout Smith + traded Names, but I don't think this is some egregious misstep. Something that might get lost in the weeds here, I perceive this as confirmation that the team views Fox as NHL-ready and they're expecting him to step in on the right side immediately.

9?

Shattenkirk - 6.1
Smith - 3.3 (no way there is room for him in the NHL)
Girardi - 1.1
Spooner - 0.3

10.8m!

Even if we find a taker on Smith or Staal at 50% next season, it's still over 10m.

Also want to add that I'm fully expecting a DeAngelo hold out.

It's only $7m in dead cap from previous years. Any buy out of Smith would be savings on the cap next year.

To look on the bright side - we would have $10.8m in dead cap in this scenario, and we would probably still field a pretty good team with our crop of young players. And if we don't... that's OK! This team is built to win starting in 2021-22, not before. Gorton knows that. Some of our fans are reluctant to believe that because it means another 2 years without competitive hockey. This is all part of the rebuild.

Also shows how much Names is worth right now. Can we have just shipped him back to tampa. I'll drive him to the airport.

Buying out Shatty was — IMO — definitely the right move. Have been saying it all along, think it’s very positive that his buy-out is “front-loaded”. He is a bad fit in a vet depth role. We shouldn’t have to worry about getting him ice time for another season, so that he possibly could be traded in a year.

Facts are, he is really cheap today at 50%. People aren’t interested. He would be cheaper, maybe someone would bait — but to what gain?

Now let’s buy-out Staal.

Because a Staal buyout doesn't clear over $5M in cap space and the integration of Trouba and growth path of DeAngelo and Fox trumps any chance of Shattenkirk playing a meaningful role on this team to rebuild value.

Not to mention Smith, staal, and shatts all have similar dead cap hits in 2022-23 and 2023-24... Avoiding a Shatts buyout means that you have to buy out Staal and Smith, which gets you around $6.1M in cap space, but the dead cap years gets up to around $2.5M... that's not a good look... All for what? Trading Shatts would probably net us a 2nd and a 3rd... Is the that worth losing $1M in cap space on a contending roster in those years? Think not
