Should have been Staal.

Drops the grade of the offseason down to a B for me depending on what else they do.

I think Staal being a LHD probably played some role in the decision. Our right side is pretty set with Trouba, DeAngelo, and Fox whereas our left side is more iffy with several less heralded rookies vying for a spot.

1.4 cap hit for Shattenkirk this year

Next year cap hit is is 6 for Shatty
But
- Names gone at 4
- Strome gone at 3.1 (likely, Strome is RFA)
- Beleskey gone at 1.9
- Girardi cap hit goes down 2.5

Shatty 1.4 for 2 more years after that, Giardi 1.1 for 3 more years after that, and Spooner at 300k for just 1 more year

I mean guys I don’t know why anyone thought anyone else would be bought out other than him for all the reasons mentioned a million times. His fate was sealed the minute we got Trouba. Pretty logical decision. Does it suck? Sure. For a year. But not giving a Chris Kreider away just to make room for a player that doesn’t fit in the lineup whatsoever at this point. Fox was never coming here to play in the A this season. That’s naive. He was pretty much guaranteed a spot or he’d have stayed at Harvard.

This had to be done and it’s done. I wanted the guy here when we signed him. But the knee injury ruined his shot and to get a DeAngelo Trouba and Fox for your right side maybe outside of center the hardest position to fill is Just like damn tip your cap. Team got stacked over there over night.

Don’t see how this is the “worst possible decision.”

A Shattenkirk buyout is a single move to get us cap compliant. Staal or Smith would have necessitated another move.

Unless you know exactly what other teams were offering for guys like Kreider and Namestnikov, it’s moronic to make the statement that this was the worst option.

Also for whatever reason they never used Shattenkirk on the PK.

I think the one place a young team like this with a kind of weird goalie situation can really get its shit pushed in is on the penalty kill. Obviously not saying Marc Staal and Brendan Smith move mountains there either.

6 million for Shattenkirk not being on the team, plus Staal and Smith’s cap hit, and Girardi’s buyout next season is insane

Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul today

Plus the added fact of ELC bonuses probably having to be added into the equation

9 million in dead cap space next season is not a good look.

9?

Shattenkirk - 6.1
Smith - 3.3 (no way there is room for him in the NHL)
Girardi - 1.1
Spooner - 0.3

10.8m!

Even if we find a taker on Smith or Staal at 50% next season, it's still over 10m.

Also want to add that I'm fully expecting a DeAngelo hold out.

If your goal is to develop our future right defense then this is the right move. No room to give minutes to Shatt to rebuild his value.
Look on the bright side his deal could have been longer. Cut bait and start fishing

ELC bonuses can be absorbed this season when Kreider et all are traded by the deadline
