1 goal in his last 10 games and that was an empty net goal.

He's definitely not 100%.
1 goal and 10 assists and a number of posts hit from quality chances created. I'm not saying it's his highest level but the team he is captaining is also winning not sure how much credit he should get for that but I am sure he would get flack if they were losing.

It is a point of pride that we currently have the league's highest paid 4th line shutdown C. I think Auston's struggles for pretty much all season, suggest some kind of lingering physical ailment, is a great argument for the Leafs to NOT go all in at the trade deadline. Without our 1C cl8cking on all cylinders, they're going nowhere in the playoffs.

Not sure how 11 points in 8 games makes you a 4th line C, but your point remains.

If he is legit unhealthy, the Leafs have to consider that going into the deadline

Everyone plays through something in sports. Players are hurt and fight through it. If he’s injured he needs to sit to get back to the level that it’s something he can play through. Looking like he can’t play through what he has and needs time off.

It’s not imo.

We are tied for the 3rd in the NHL despite Matthews’ injury struggles. They absolutely better get him some rest down the stretch. I also believe he will push himself a lot harder and more consistently come the playoffs. Right now, they are managing it as best they can for him to be able to play in the postseason.

The uncertainty though is just another reason you damn well better acquire guys with term.

I get that he has not played to the standard we expect, but my god the hyperbole in here.

Matthews is on pace for 40G and 90 Pts while playing elite defensively and people are comparing him to a 4th line C. Yes he is noticeably not himself, but he has been a net positive and a 1C caliber player still despite his struggles.

Most importantly the team is winning.

I think the most important thing is the team is winning right now, and maybe there’s some signs things will turn around with the prodigious amount of posts he’s hit the last 2.5 weeks and doing enough to facilitate goals, set up that OT winner vs Boston etc. But yeah this is basically a nightmare, injury fuelled season for the highest paid player trying to stake claim to be a Top 3, 5, 10 player.
