Gotta pump the brake a little on Fern.

Didnt know he was signed another year.

Also I wasn't putting him in the NHL but no reason why he couldnt come over and play in the AHL if he wasn't signed. Similar to Ilyin

Stupid question, but do we still own his rights? And if so, why aren't we trying harder to get him back over here?

We do and they are. He is suppose to come back over this summer

Oh boy kid, wait until you get to the Mike Sullivan run Penguins...

Honestly though, this kid is doing everything we would want a prospect to be doing. Developing nicely and steadily getting more responsibility while continuing to produce. He's on a very nice path.

If we think back to NA and what Spezza has told the WBS kids - "we don't want to call you up until you're here to stay" - it might do Ilyin a bit of good to do one more year in the KHL next year. My worry about guys like Hallander and Ilyin is - I, myself, would have a hard time playing in WBS or potentially Wheeling while watching guys like Nieto, Imama, and Acciari in the NHL. Why would I want to do that when I could be a top line player in the league at home?

I think when they bring him over, there needs to be a legitimate plan to get him up to the NHL in-season, IF he doesn't start the year in the NHL. He'd likely need an adjustment period in the AHL which is fine and expected but if the plan is only to "meh, we'll see how he does and go from there", then leave him in the KHL where he's getting top line minutes.

Pretty exciting to have some overseas prospects doing well - Hallander, Fernstrom, Ilyin.

Thank you for reading my article.
I frankly agree with you - Ilyin is doing well, but is not a dominant player even if he does look good from time to time. The best idea would be IMHO to sign a new one-year deal with Severstal (granted that his head coach signed for a further three years term, and that coach is great especially in developing young players), then see what is the situation in May 2026. He's one year more, his career is one year longer, and at that point, moving to the AHL would be a much better idea even if it doesn't work out.

I'd definitely give Fernström at least another year in the SHL. Let him be a leading player before coming over.
Yeah Hallander can probably come back next year because I think there would be a legitimate need for him. But Ilyin and Fernstrom may fare better with another year of development in Europe.

Say we are able to get Misa and two more top 3 picks over the next three years, by then they will be early/mid-20s and enter a prime state of their careers. That's when you want them over here.

100%. I want Big Melv come over and put over a Koivunen like season in the AHL and he's much more likely to do that after having a strong sophmore season in the SHL that if he jump over next year. He will be 19 for most of next season, no need to rush.

Just published a translated interview with Mikhail Ilyin (2023 5th round), where he discuss his progress in the current season, having Malkin as an idol and being drafted by the Penguins, and his eventual move to North America.

Have a good read!

Great article, thank you.

Both Fernstrom and Ilyin seem to be in good situations. Top 6 spots on competitive teams.

Was looking into some NCAA free agents and one I like is Quinn Hutson. Brothe r of the other 2. ‘02 birthdate. A smidge taller than his brothers and he’s a forward. Looks pretty good in clips. Good skater, good skillset. He’s only in his junior year but supposedly he’s graduating. He’s probably gonna be one of the more targeted NCAA FAs, he’s not exactly under the radar but I also don’t think he’s some guaranteed home-run either.

I would advocate for Fernstrom to stay in the SHL until he's fully dominant in the league, after which the goal would be for him to have a short stint in the AHL to adjust to NA ice and then go fully into the NHL. I don't see a need to rush him to the AHL as a 20 year old, the SHL is a better league than the AHL and I think it would be good for his development to keep him there as long as possible.

The Penguins are going to have a lot of young guys coming into their organization that will need ice time. I'm supportive of letting pretty much any Euro player in a good situation stay in that situation for as long as possible.

The second part is more of a reason for him to stay. But I disagree with the SHL being much better of a league than the AHL. Also a full year in the AHL is what he will need to get use to the smaller ice.

Hallander is FA currently, I’m 90% sure. His rights expired sometime after the season began.

Fernstrom is young and will need to fill out which is probably 2 or 3 years from now. But his frame can probably handle another 15 pounds which is 190 to 195. At 6-2 that a good sized RW. I still want a RH center or RW right shot in the draft. Pens may have a shot at Martone or the big center both RH shots.

He will be a RFA at the end of this season. We still own his rights

The Pens extended him an offer. Or maybe went to arbitration or something like that. But because they did that the Pens retain his rights til the end of the 26-27 season.
Odd, all the sites like Puckpedia and Eliteprospects don’t have him listed anymore , and they’re pretty on the ball with that stuff. Still have Joseph Masonius listed there.

Would be a good add though if he comes back.

I’d probably offer Hallander a 1 way deal, maybe 2 years at like $800k. He was knocking on the NHL door 2 years ago and is ideal for the bottom-6. He and Pono should both be in the NHL, even if just as 12th/13th forwards to start.

We have a couple forward spots opening up next year and, beyond that, a lot more even if we don’t trade Hayes, Acciari, Heinen, Lizotte, etc.

Our entire bottom 6 should be on the right side of 27 by 2026-27. And we should have the players in the system to fill it out.
