When was the last time we were in on a big ticket UFA? Brad Richards? Doesn't everyone remember the back and forth "unless something changes dramatically, Rangers aren't getting Richards" and the "Richards would have to leave millions on the table to come to NY"

This is posturing. These situations are almost identical. Highly coveted UFA who wants to play for NYR but is receiving ludicrous offers the Rangers won't match from other teams. The Rangers are leaking to Brooks, MacKenzie, Friedman, Dreger, Custance, etc. with this information about the Rangers being out on Shattenkirk, just like they did with Richards. I would not be the least bit surprised if Shattenkirk does exactly what Richards does and leaves millions on the table to sign with us on July 1st.

The Rangers would be ****ing stupid not to fill their biggest hole with the best option on the market only to have their biggest rival sign him for seven years! Kovalchuck all over again! If that happens, I am done with this team!!!

How high are u willing to go for Shatty? 8x7? 7.5x7?

Done with this team? Talk about over the top.

That never happened with Richards.

The narrative was that they wanted him and he wanted them. He hosted a few teams (Rangers included) at Newport sports on July 1st, signed with the rangers on the 2nd.

What reason would they have to leak that they aren't interested? It's not going to drive his price down, NJ and Buffalo are about to go HAM

6 years, $6.5m AAV is my ceiling

I would be okay with giving him $7m AAV if he compromised on 3 or 4 years

If he took 3 or 4 years would give him 7.5 or 8. I'm worried about the 7 or 8 years he might get .
I'm with you 6.5 for 5 or 6 would be fair on both sides

Purely speculation on my part, but it could do one of two things.

1) Buffalo or NJ don't have higher incentive to outbid the team he wants to go to if that team no longer is interested. If NYR is off the table, Shattenkirk is obviously not gonna have to get a lucrative offer to sway him as he would if NYR are still an option.

2) It could have the averse effect and establish a bidding war between NJ and Buffalo, one of which is a division rival. Stand firm at your offer and hope that your division rival pays through the no$e and cap straps themselves for the next seven years at 7.7-8 million or something absurd.

I'm so on the fence with this one. I do want him on our team but we have other issues to address now too. I don't think money is the issue, I think it's a 7 year deal with a NMC when we still have Staal and now Smith with them. We can end up in the same dilemma we are/were now, down the line. We now finally have some real good (potentially) young defensemen fighting for spots.

Graves, Pionk, Bereglazov, DeAngelo, Day... all have potential. Our D prospect pool looks pretty damn good now.

Also, we need to address a backup G before any of our prospects are ready. If Hank performs like he did for most of this past regular season and we don't have a Raanta level guy to handle a decent amount of games, we're in trouble. Especially with some rookie D learning the system. And we need a center, or two. Maybe an additional bottom six guy who can PK with some grit.

So yes, I'd love to have him but without fixing those other issues, this year will still be a down year I feel. And I'm not convinced we can get it all done. Though potentially next year we could. So that's the gamble. If we can't put it all together this season or next, eventually Shatty becomes more of a medium player for us and then a liability. Potentially.

But having him sign in NJ would also suck. I wouldn't HATE it but I'm not a fan of that occurring. And it's pretty clear he could do that easily and still be a New Yorker. NJD may not be competitive right now but they're likely not far from it with a few key moves and their recent draft. That could be attractive to him if they offer enough and we don't. I could definitely see him signing there. I'm sure he prefers to be a Ranger, but I'm also pretty sure he wouldn't mind being a Devil if we don't work it out. At least as far as future potential and living situation.

Mixed feelings here. I think I'll be OK with it either way. Not a huge issue to me. I really do wanna see what other moves we make though. This is such a strange period for us where it really can go either way pretty strongly depending on a few moves. Cup contender, to barely bubble, literally.

You know you want iy shattyyy

Side-question:

Does Chris Nichols make his (Twitter) living just quoting other people? I mean he says he's an insider but every tweet I've seen of his is quoting other insiders.

Too many of you guys are trying to read into these tweets like it's the bible code. You want to believe something one way or the other so the outcome you want happens.

The tweets are plain language. The rangers are interested in a top pair right hand d at the right at a price that is probably way under shattenkirk's ask. Thats why they are luke warm. It's not writers playing both sides or covering their butts. It's the team that is middle of the road.

We have to wait a few more days and that's all there is to it. Shattenkirk can contend at a cheaper contract or get paid to rebuild a franchise.

Rangers have 19M in cap space with only Zib and Fast to sign as far as RFAs go...

If Shattenkirk wants to be a Ranger, they both should be able to figure out something fair to both to make it happen, and that's how we should proceed.
