Gagner coming off a 50pt season is not going to be signed for 2.75.

Don't forget despite Gagne's career high 50 points last year, he only had maybe 15 of them in the final 40 games. He really fell off bigtime.

Listen, he is what he is...a 40-45 point guy who can help us on the PP. Could we use that?....Yeah for sure and he's a center which is something we can also use.

I'd hate to do it but maybe...maybe I'd go 3.0 for x 3 for him...that would be my absolute limit. I don't think JG goes anywhere past that for Gagne.

Rebuild on the fly means ice the most competitive team you can while simultaneuously focusing on gaining young assets.

It's going to mean signing free agents, like Shanahan, Naslund, Gomez, Drury, Redden, Gaborik, and maybe even Shattenkirk.

It's going to mean deadline additions like Ozolinsh, Antropov, Morris, Jokinen, and Smith.

These concepts aren't mutually exclusive.

Yeah, that's how i read Gorton aswell, try to stay competetive while staying relatively young and without throwing away high picks for pure rentals.

He's a 3C, on a championship team playing with Phil Kessel...

He's a 3C on a team with Crosby and Malkin...The guy has scored 49 points, 39 points, 29 points (63 games), and 37 points the last four years. That is way way above 4th line center production. His most common linemate in those years was Kessel, Kessel (only 200 of 700 mins though), Higgins, Palmieri (who was not the player he is now). If a team got that production from the 4C they would probably be the best offense in the league by a wide margin.

I certainly would not sign him though. I don't even want to pay a 4C more than like...1.5M.

Might as well get Thornton, Jagr, and Iginla to form the slowest line in NHL history. :sarcasm:

Better keep the puck in the zone!

Seriously, at least Bonino can skate.

oh I agree he's a 3rd center, but he's not going to be that kind of 3rd center here, he wont have Kessel. and the term will suck.

They aren't remotely the same thing. Bonino has at least 3-4 more years of contribution to make to a team. It isn't clear that Thornton even has 1.

I'd rather take a shot at one year of Thornton than give Bonino 3-4 years is what I'm saying.

Not a fan of Bonino at all

Against men:

Deangelo has played a combined 133 games in the #1 and the #3/4 leagues in the world.
Bear Gloves has played 162 games in the #2 league in the world.

Bereglazov is superior in every way to DeAngelo in my opinion. He may be the best pickup of the offseason by any gm.

Maybe it's just me but I have a harder time ranking leagues after the NHL. I can accept that the KHL is better than the AHL but there are some things that need to be said as far as comparables.

The AHL has limits on teams as far as players past a certain age. One can look through KHL team rosters and find any number of players who couldn't quite make it as NHL'ers and who make a very good living in the KHL--there are also a lot of players who spent several years in the AHL without making the NHL--there are a lot more little guys and a lot more older--as in 35 and older players and there is marked and greater difference between the quality of the best KHL teams and the worst KHL teams (not all that much parity) that you don't see in the NHL.

Pretty sure the guy who has a total of 33 points in 156 KHL games is most likely not better offensively then the guy with 59 points 94 AHL games and 14 in 39 in his debut on a horrible NHL team.

If any of Bonino, Thornton or Marleau sign with us, expect it to be 2 years or less.

57 points in 94 AHL games?

maybe he's admittedly better than I thought..

I'm beginning to think rebuild on the fly simply means;

Trade players at market value to recoup lost picks, then sign replacements.

The goal is more likely to extend our window of competitiveness rather than to halt it altogether and restart the building process. Have players to phase in as others phase out.
That's what rebuilding on the fly is.

Move on from some core pieces, recoup picks and young assets for the future. Doing this without tanking and while trying to remain a contender.

Thus the "on the fly" part of it. Doing the rebuild without tanking and giving up seasons. Trying to do it while keeping your team at the same competitiveness level.

I'm not sure why people thought we were going to go full rebuild. Especially bc this team was a few minutes of better end zone defense from going to the ECF this year. While already being a young team as currently constructed. A full tear down wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

$2.75m does not even come close to what Gagner will sign for. Career high 50pts last year, 27 years old, good history of producing offense, good possession player. And a very weak free agent market at that.

I don't know Krams. The guy made $650k last year and because he scored 50 points, a team is going to give him 3.5 mill?

I don't see it. His average salary over his career is about 2.3 per with the most he ever made was 3.4 three years ago.

I'll split the difference with you and concede that due to their being a dearth in quality centers in UFA, Gagne could approach 3.25 x 2 or 3.0 x 3. No way tho that he approaches 3.75 or 4.0....that's crazy money that would be a waste.

As I said, I'd love Gagner at 2.75 x 3 but I can see JG going up to 3.0 x 3...I'll give you that....

See me after the season. Call it a bold prediction but I'll stand by it

He's not quite as solid offensively. But I think that's more of a role issue in the KHL than his skill

I'd be happy to have both of them in the lineup and see how it shakes out, but that's gonna require some more moves to become a reality.

I can't believe people are in favor of giving Bonino one less year (or even the same term) and 75% of the cap hit than the center we just traded (despite being 2 years older) and nowhere near as good overall...

I'm not. I want a great forward or a forward signed to only a 1 year contract. I do not want to lock in to a big money long term contract to anyone that can not put up 50 points or more at forward.
