Bonino's almost 30 and his high is 49 points. He's not a top line center and if we're talking a lot of years and a big cap hit--it's not worth it.

Dadonov is more interesting to me.

Until July 1, none of us know exactly what the "plan" is. However if we take JG at his word, you'd have to think we are going to be making some pretty big moves Sunday.

I still don't count us out of the Shatty sweepstakes despite what some of the "experts" and people in the know are saying. I think it's a ruse just to keep everyone guessing.

Signing Smith was a smart and savvy move by JG. It was about $100k more than I anticiapted as I had guessed 4.25 for 4 last night. So the extra 100k is peanuts considering we needed Smith and now at the very very worst and we don't get Shatty, at least we covered our ***** somewhat in signing Smith who is the replacement for Girardi...bigtime upgrade for backend right there.

I have a feeling something totally under that radar is going to pop up. Something along the lines of a Galyunchuk coming here and possibly Zucc going to Montreal....something like that.

Can't imagine JG is done. We need a back up goalie too....hello Anders Nilsson...welcome to NY. We need another center if Galy doesn't come here....hello Martin Hanzel if you'll come here for 3.5 for 3. And worse comes to worse...hello Sam Gagner for 2.75 for 3.

Bottom line...we aint done by a long shot.
Gagner coming off a 50pt season is not going to be signed for 2.75.

Bonino should be at around $4m as well (comparable to Berglund and Sutter).

Term is the real question. 3 years, cool. 4 years, too much. 5, get away from me.

"rebuild on the fly"

I'm beginning to think rebuild on the fly simply means;

Trade players at market value to recoup lost picks, then sign replacements.

The goal is more likely to extend our window of competitiveness rather than to halt it altogether and restart the building process. Have players to phase in as others phase out.

I can't believe people are in favor of giving Bonino one less year (or even the same term) and 75% of the cap hit than the center we just traded (despite being 2 years older) and nowhere near as good overall...

My earlier prediction for opening night is looking pretty good right now:

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Nash - Andersson - Zuccarello
Vesey - Hayes - Miller
Grabner - Bonino - Fast
Nieves

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo
Bereglazov

Lundqvist
Nilsson

Smith signed, rumors on Bonino and Nilsson, Shattenkirk will cave and come home for 5m x 5yr!

Don't think they're going to sign Bonino to play on the 4th line, he's going to ask for way too much money to make that a reasonable move. You don't pay your 4th line center $4 mill or something.

Has Dadanov been rumored to any teams at all really?

Bonino? Seriously? Better be a 1-2 year deal at most.
I was all over bringing in Bonino a couple of days ago as I think he'd fill alot of check marks and help the team. I did some alot of research since than and everything I'm reading and hearing is he's going to get 4.5 for 4. And that my friend is waaaay too much money for him.

Most I'd go would be 3.75 for 4 which would double his existing 1.9 salary. But we all know he's got a big head now....helped a team win 2 Cups and so some dumb dumb GM is going to give him the 4.5x4 term he wants but it won't be JG.

So I've tempered my expectations to at best a Hanzel for 3.75x3 which he likely won't do or a Sam Gagner for 2.5-2.75 x 3 which I think is reasonable and he could help us.

So unless Bonino signs for less than 4.0 which he won't....cya bud

Vegas was the persistent rumor. Friedman says it's likely a team in the East, though he couldn't get more specific.

Yes. Not sure why people thought the Rangers were going full rebuild.

I hate to keep bringing this up.. but if the Rangers spend 4 years and 4M each on both Smith (already did) and now Bonino... I'd rather give Shattenkirk damn near 8M for 7 years.. We don't have guys who "play like Smith" but we have a ton of LHD, and Bonino is awful when he's not playing with Kessel..

would rather the difference maker over "2 good players" (not sure how even "good" they are)

Partly because Stepan was moved for assets to help improve other parts of the team?

If trading Stepan gets you a PP QB and potential top 4 offensive defenseman and a 60 point two way center in the future, and then you can downgrade a bit in terms of skill and salary to replace him, you can still come out on top

It's not like they gave Stepan away for no return just to be rid of his cap hit

An added note on my previous post- the intuitive next step to a 'rebuild on the fly' move would be to trade Nash for picks/prospects and sign Marleau or Vanek on short term to replace him until Vesey/Buch develop enough.

If I'm right in that the strategy is move depreciating assets to recoup picks and replace them in FA, that is. But my theory is almost as video-gamey as others here who want to trade everyone older than 26 for every pick the next 3 years.

This x1000

But I think it'll be Nash + prospect for a young center who can step in immediately

I'd pay 3.5-4 for him if he takes a short term deal to prove he can do it again.

Way too much Griff. I'd rather give Hanzel that if he'd come here for that.

Gagne shouldn't sniff 3.0. I'd anticipate 2.75 x 3 is the market place for him. Yeah he' been in the league forever yet he's only 27. But he's pretty one dimensional. Hanzel would be a much better fit but he's another guy like Bonino where a GM is going to overpay for. Now if Hanzel wasn't so injury prone, I might go to 4.0 x 3.

But you and I both know once Hanzel signed here, he'd be hurt in training camp...lol

I suspect they still haven't gotten any offers for Nash that have made it worth moving him. I could see him being moved at the trade deadline though since teams won't be wringing their hands about the cap space he eats up. Especially likely if the Rangers are kind of a bubble team.

But again it's still early in this offseason, they might still move him...it's probably the better move to do it now because if they're solidly in a playoff spot and thinking "let's see how deep we can go" at the trade deadline then there will be pressure to not trade him.

I don't think there's any more question about Bear Gloves being ready to play than there is about Deangelo, yet I see you pencilled him into your lineup.

Pionk is a different thing.

One played in the NFL and has NA resume of producing numbers where the other doesn't

Rebuild on the fly means ice the most competitive team you can while simultaneuously focusing on gaining young assets.

It's going to mean signing free agents, like Shanahan, Naslund, Gomez, Drury, Redden, Gaborik, and maybe even Shattenkirk.

It's going to mean deadline additions like Ozolinsh, Antropov, Morris, Jokinen, and Smith.

These concepts aren't mutually exclusive.

$2.75m does not even come close to what Gagner will sign for. Career high 50pts last year, 27 years old, good history of producing offense, good possession player. And a very weak free agent market at that.

Rangers have been rebuilding on the fly for years

It's how they've stayed competitive
