Get slightly worse but pick up a couple prospects.

Depending on the C we get, do we even get worse? Even if we don't get another C i'd say our D looks much better then last season.

And we'd have the cap space to add a good D-man mid season if the kids drown ;P

Regardless of the plan there was no point in signing Smith, if they don't get Shattenkirk. So hopefully they make that happen.

I agree with this.. Smith alone does not affect the defense.. There were many games last year the defense was without Girardi and was still pitiful.

A key part of the best line in Europe, scores for fun in the KHL, he's VERY good.

I havent seen him play since he has been in the KHL. He did not excel in NA previously. Do you see him being a first line player if he comes back?

Hey BB, not sure anyone ever has thanked you for putting these roster charts together but if not, allow me to be the first.

Can't tell you how helpful they are to keep track of everything and I for one really do appreciate your time you put in to keep these updated.

Well done sir. I'd buy you are a beer or three if we lived closer....

lets not forget you have to bring back Fasth and Zibanejad.

So thats 7 mil right there. so its really what...12 mil to replace Stepan, Girardi, Lindberg, and Raantas roster spots.

1.5 mil for a goalie.
say 2 mil for a center
say another kid makes the lineup as a forward...at a mil.thats 4.5 mil

6.5 mil on Shatty give us very very little space.

Need to re-sign Skjei, Miller, Hayes, etc. Nash's money won't cover all of that..

will be an interesting time to be JG.

Grabner's contract is also up.

And exactly, very good post, don't think many really realize how thight we are up against the Cap. The Cap should go up a bit more next season. But if we get Shatty, JG is not making any additions to this team for a long time that's for sure.

Keep the mobility a little longer. We are a very attractive good looking young team. Look for short term commitments. Will Dadonov take a prove himself contract like Rads did? But keep the mobility. What was Philly's downfall? Locking themselves up with all those stupid contracts from Streit to McDonald to Pronger and so forth. It's us and Chicago that are getting the young UFAs and that players prefer to go to, Philly used to be very attractive.

We went out and got Nash, he didn't get it done for us. I thought he would be a tremendous pickup for us, but I had overrated him a bit. We are in a position to do the same -- once -- these coming years. That guy just shouldn't be Kevin Shattenkirk.

I think its a mistake to commit a lot of years and big $$$ for any center that is not a all star level center. If we get a all star level wing, Zibs and Hayes can play top 6 until a better center option comes along.

not only is Nash up, so is grabner and Holden.. That's 13M right there (and prob another cap increase), and there's no guarantee the Rangers would want to sign all of their RFAs next year (Depends on what happens with them this year).. That's one reason I think they're going with Hayes as the 2C.

If they could just lose Staal I would be content.

McDonagh Smith
Skjei DeAngelo
Holden Bereglazov/Pionk

Is he worth a risk? Is he coming back to NA for sure?

I'm not sure if he's definitely coming back to the NHL, but I imagine the US dollar doing so well right now plays a factor. I would be more willing to take the risk if he was a right handed shot. Outside of Zibanejad that's a dimension we don't have.

I havent seen him play since he has been in the KHL. He did not excel in NA previously. Do you see him being a first line player if he comes back?

Tough to label him as that, but he's probably a scoring 2nd liner atleast i'd say.

Also, he wasn't really bad in NA, 11/12 was bad i guess but 10/11 and 09/10 he was good, atleast on the stat sheet.

My earlier prediction for opening night is looking pretty good right now:

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Nash - Andersson - Zuccarello
Vesey - Hayes - Miller
Grabner - Bonino - Fast
Nieves

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo
Bereglazov

Lundqvist
Nilsson

Smith signed, rumors on Bonino and Nilsson, Shattenkirk will cave and come home for 5m x 5yr!

So has anyone worked out the 'plan' yet?

Until July 1, none of us know exactly what the "plan" is. However if we take JG at his word, you'd have to think we are going to be making some pretty big moves Sunday.

I still don't count us out of the Shatty sweepstakes despite what some of the "experts" and people in the know are saying. I think it's a ruse just to keep everyone guessing.

Signing Smith was a smart and savvy move by JG. It was about $100k more than I anticiapted as I had guessed 4.25 for 4 last night. So the extra 100k is peanuts considering we needed Smith and now at the very very worst and we don't get Shatty, at least we covered our ***** somewhat in signing Smith who is the replacement for Girardi...bigtime upgrade for backend right there.

I have a feeling something totally under that radar is going to pop up. Something along the lines of a Galyunchuk coming here and possibly Zucc going to Montreal....something like that.

Can't imagine JG is done. We need a back up goalie too....hello Anders Nilsson...welcome to NY. We need another center if Galy doesn't come here....hello Martin Hanzel if you'll come here for 3.5 for 3. And worse comes to worse...hello Sam Gagner for 2.75 for 3.

Bottom line...we aint done by a long shot.

If they need a 4c who can PK they should just sign Rasmussen and forget Bonino

Regardless of the plan there was no point in signing Smith, if they don't get Shattenkirk. So hopefully they make that happen.

Ah boy it may happen cause in paper he's there 1st pair Rd

I'm ok as long as it's 6 million x 5 More and I worry
