lets not forget you have to bring back Fasth and Zibanejad.

So thats 7 mil right there. so its really what...12 mil to replace Stepan, Girardi, Lindberg, and Raantas roster spots.

1.5 mil for a goalie.
say 2 mil for a center
say another kid makes the lineup as a forward...at a mil.thats 4.5 mil

6.5 mil on Shatty give us very very little space.

Need to re-sign Skjei, Miller, Hayes, etc. Nash's money won't cover all of that..

will be an interesting time to be JG.

Trade Holden theres 1.65M, wouldn't give a backup 1.5M, that's way too much

A little high for Smith but The difference we're talking about is peanuts. Its not going to stop us from doing anything else we wanted to do.

If thats what it had to be to get it done than so be it.

There's no room for Shattenkirk unless Staal is being moved and Smith has been signed for the left side....

If they can somehow get out from under Marc Staal's contract and move Holden for a 3rd, I would love to sign Shattenkirk

McDonagh Shattenkirk
Skjei DeAngelo
Bereglazov Smith
Pionk, Graves as callups

If Klein retires we have 18, 276 M left

Nilsson as backup at around 1 M for a two year deal

Zib and Fast for around 7 M

Leaves a little over 10 M

If we bring in Shatty - which we very well might - we have maybe 4 M in space. Plus we then have (at least) one D too many- Yet two fwd spots open.
Opens several interesting scenarios moving fwd. There is space to do interesting things if we move out another contract (Holden or Staal). But will we?

Nick Bonino come on down, 5 years 4.5M. Jeez the Center situation is going to be interesting. I think Hanzal on a 1-year deal is our best option in FA. If Gorton goes that route. I doubt Hanzal accepts but otherwise I'd almost just put Miller there.

Ok so 19 remaining....
I'm going to overestimate everything here:
Shatty-7M
Ziba-5.5
Fast-2
Holden waived to minors or traded frees up something like 1.5
4.5 for Dadonov remaining with 1.5 left for extras

Trade a winger for a center, include picks if necessary. Preferably trade Nash.

Investing big UFA $ in Smith / ****
While dealing Step

= continued mediocrity and lack of flexibility

Makes no sense. So is probably the "plan."

That's why he's gotta find a taker for Staal.

Trading Holden would free up a little bit more space and give us some breathing room. But then you risk losing defensive depth if Holden is traded and Shattenkirk isn't subsequently signed.

This lead up to free agency is hilarious. You aren't supposed to talk contract, which is stupid. But no one follows the rule. And somehow Thornton knows he'll get a multi year offer.

But how do we convince them to go all in this season and trade for Nash? 2018 1st? Vilardi?

I don't see Zibanejad as a $5 mil per year player yet. He's cracked 50 points once. Last year was up and--he ends up with 37 points in 56 games. That would prorate to about 55. He had a good playoff but even so....somewhere around $4.5 is fair.
