sens resigned condon for 3 years...so thats 1 potential ufa goalie off the market

Smith signed a market value deal. There's really nothing else to say. I hope he and Skjei keep up the chemistry.

So all we need now is:

Move Holden for a pick
Klein Retires (Cerny seems to think this is happening)

That's $4.55M in cap space. Smith is $4.35M of that.

McDonagh
Smith
Skjei
Staal
Bereglazov
DeAngelo
Kampfer most likely the 7th dman

There's still money for Shattenkirk if they want to get him. I'm hoping that Smith contract doesn't have any clauses

Looks like a modified NTC, which I don't understand.

and to me..market value is something the rangers can not afford to get into. market value = overpaying.

the deals you overpay always...ALWAYS come back to bite you in the ass.

I have zero doubts whatsoever in 2 years this will be another Girardi or Staal like situation. None.

They did not give him a full NMC, so it's OK. Now, let's step away from that ledge.

LOL chill out. If he gives us 3 solid years out of 4, I'll take it

Except Smith can actually skate. Smith isn't just some shot blocking plug. He can do everything. 4.3 million is very fair for a top four defencemen

We do recoup some of it.

Yes, but it's still a significant penalty. 2.6 mil this year. 3.6 each of the next 2 years and 1.1 mil for 3 years after that.

I'm interested to see where Girardi signs and for how much/long. If it's under 2.75 mil and/or under 3 years, we'll know for sure that there was no market to trade him, because trading him at 50% retained would have been better than the buyout.

Oh, I think there is a ton of interest, at 1 to 1.5, and remember, again Dan had a NMC, the death of any chance at a trade.

The key difference is that this is a 4 year deal instead of a 6 year deal. If he has 2 good years followed by 1 down year, he'll only have 1 year left. Getting rid of him won't be as much of a problem. We should move him in 2 or 3 years regardless of how he is playing.

His NMC was to end on June 30th and become a limited NTC. Finding a team he would accept a trade to wasn't the issue.

Please Sweet Baby Jesus, please please please be shopping Holden.

They have to be. Holden and Klein's salaries combined cover what Smith just earned. Slot in DeAngelo making $864k and Kampfer making $650k and the level of skill just went way up on the back end without taking on any major cap hits

Don't forget that a trade also has to include a team sending an asset back.

So even if Girardi signs for three-years at half his old AAV [would be shocking], it doesn't mean that he could've been traded. We also can't discount that G has full control as a FA, and isn't 'prisoner' to where NYR can maximize his value. Maybe NYR could've shopped him hard enough, but not to a spot where G wanted to go. Maybe NYR did him that favor?

Smiths a better player than Girardi..but he plays a tough game..hes physical..yes...he does a LOT more than G..but hes overpaid...and its by a decent amount.

It doesnt matter tho..at this point, if youre going to give him that contract, you may as well say eff it, and go get Shatty.
