The Rangers still only have three top 4 Dman, (yes, that's all they had at the end of last year.) Management has supposedly told Staal to expect a reduction in minutes, (which was reportedly why he refused interviews on breakup day). Are they planning to give DeAngelo an opportunity to break into the top 4?

Hopefully it's McDonagh/Smith, and then Skjei and Staal down the left. The rest of the spots are up for grabs with the likes of Pionk, DeAngelo, Bereglazov, and Holden.

Seeing on twitter apparently Mirtle said on Sirius XM today that Holden is being moved shortly

Interesting. Well if it's true and we get a decent pick for it then that's a good move. With Smith here he becomes unnecessary except as a #7.

It's too bad Klein had to ruin any potential trade value he might've had by announcing his intentions to retire so early. Probably could've gotten a 3rd for him in this market.

Would I have liked it a little less? Sure, but I won't complain over 300K-ish. That is silly. Especially when you saved money on Girardi, Klein looks to be retiring (save money there) and if we can find a taker for Staal and he waives ... we save EVEN MORE MONEY.

Staal will be traded or bought out next year. You will get your cap relief there. Nash's contract comes off the books. And if the Rangers were to want to bring him back it would be for less.

I assume it will be Holden's spot to lose

Edit - should have kept reading lol

Or how about Brady on Macs right. Didn't Brady learn to play on right while in ahl? He says its not an issue. Can't we just play our best players in the best spots? AV are you listening? Then Smith and Jersey Boy as 2nd.

Then we signed Smith to play on the left side? I'd rather keep Skjei on the left playing 2nd pair minutes for now. If it isn't working, they can try something else.

They traded the assets for Smith for a reason, they like his game and his attitude. He wasn't going to walk.

I think they roll the dice, avoid Shattenkirk and see what DeAngelo, Bereglazov, Day, Pionk, Graves can do. All of these guys are on the verge of cracking an NHL lineup.

Smith squeezed us for that extra 350k I see. Well played Brendan well played. I'm sure he threw in well I'm taking a risk coming back. I may get "lost" on the bench again. Going to need a bit more buttering

So all we need now is:

Move Holden for a pick
Klein Retires (Cerny seems to think this is happening)

That's $4.55M in cap space. Smith is $4.35M of that.

McDonagh
Smith
Skjei
Staal
Bereglazov
DeAngelo
Kampfer most likely the 7th dman

There's still money for Shattenkirk if they want to get him. I'm hoping that Smith contract doesn't have any clauses

Interested to see if they move Graves. Kind of a log jam at LD, they could probably get a comparable forward back for him
