I'd be fine with that. We have the cap space and he'll only be 32 when the contract ends. Trade him a year before that and recoup some assets. Hopefully there's no NMC in the last 2 years.

Very happy to get that contract done. We needed a vet who can play the right side (and no, I don't want Shatty for 7 years). Smith played well for us last year. The term and AAV won't be a problem. Just need to hear about any NTC/NMC.

I'm ok with the Smith deal, we need a steady top 4 and that's a decent price for one. Hopefully he can show long term consistency.

Having said that cerny looked like the guy that lives in the house on the block your mom used to tell you to stay far away from.

Now regarding defensemen. I'm starting to get jittery. Big name insiders saying we aren't so hot on Shattenkirk. That's troubling. Definitely bringing Smith back. Another lefty. Also troubling. Even though I do want him.

But the biggest thing is this big media push on Sean Day (they've made it a point to say he prefers playing the right side which he does) and how he can make the team. For some who may recall early last year I had Sean Day as our top non graduated prospect. His upside is monstrous and he's way ahead of schedule it appears.

We trade for DeAngelo a righty PP guy who is a shooter. He's being touted as doing the exact job Shattenkirk would be coming in to do.

Then you've got Pionk who they're talking about just like DeAngelo. A guy they feel can make the team as well.

And THEN you've got the most professionally ready of them all Bereglazov who plays both sides even more so the right. Defensive Dman. We need someone killing penalties.

That's not even mentioning Holden and Kampfer(who just got a 2year deal)

I do expect Holden dealt after UFA names come off the board.

But those are a lot of talented albeit young bodies they seem to have penciled in. Could we really not be targeting Shattenkirk?

All these people thinking we could have got Shatty for 6.35m, I cannot wait to see the reaction when he gets north of 7m from someone. Also, this was a fair deal for a guy whould would have got 4.5 from someone if he was greedy and went to 7/1.

I thought Smith could get $4.5m as a UFA so I was hoping for $4m before July 1st.... Shatty is going to get $7m+ as an UFA lol
