Buffalo will eventually though.
He makes too much sense for them.
It's gonna be Buffalo or NJ IMO. Both can afford the overpayment

The blue line will experience growing pains as they transition it. To be expected.
I think the question at this point is whether the Rangers are going to go with an inexperienced blueline and live with the growing pains, or if we'll see more moves to fill it out.
The Rangers and Smith appear headed towards a deal.

13. I know we’ve been hammering Shattenkirk to the Rangers, but New York seems very determined to increase the roles and responsibilities of its young players. The draft-day trade with Arizona is excellent evidence of that.
And a few teams are curious to see if Buffalo makes the biggest pitch for Kevin Shattenkirk.
I can't believe we're not gonna sign Shattenkirk after trading Stepan.

Signing Smith instead is just another dumb decision on the FO part.

Completely agree. Would much rather give an extra million or two to Shattenkirk than Smith. Shattenkirk is exactly what this team needs to pair with McDonagh.
Has way more to do with term than anything. I could only see rangers signing shatenkirk if he's willing to take 5 years

Eh, if Smith comes in close to 4x4 then he's the smarter signing then Shattenkirk if he wants over $6.5m imo... Much smarter...
I'd take both though.
I'd rather pay up for the superior defenseman, but that's just my opinion.

Certainly would make it look like Goeton has much less of a plan than many believe.
I'd do a 5 year deal worth $6-6.5M in a heartbeat. It's the 6th year on the deal that makes it much less appealing.
