The blue line will experience growing pains as they transition it. To be expected.

I think the question at this point is whether the Rangers are going to go with an inexperienced blueline and live with the growing pains, or if we'll see more moves to fill it out.

My guess is that they're comfortable with the former, but would prefer the latter.

The Rangers and Smith appear headed towards a deal.

I'm surprised you didn't reference this (or maybe you're just tired of having to repeat yourself, haha.)

13. I know we’ve been hammering Shattenkirk to the Rangers, but New York seems very determined to increase the roles and responsibilities of its young players. The draft-day trade with Arizona is excellent evidence of that.

and

And a few teams are curious to see if Buffalo makes the biggest pitch for Kevin Shattenkirk.

Again I think there is a lot of posturing going on right now. Shatty may very well sign with BUF or NJ but I do not for a second believe the Rangers arent very seriously interested

More cold water on SK

Signing Smith instead is just another dumb decision on the FO part.

Completely agree. Would much rather give an extra million or two to Shattenkirk than Smith. Shattenkirk is exactly what this team needs to pair with McDonagh.

Eh, if Smith comes in close to 4x4 then he's the smarter signing then Shattenkirk if he wants over $6.5m imo... Much smarter...

I'd take both though.

Has way more to do with term than anything. I could only see rangers signing shatenkirk if he's willing to take 5 years

Of course! How do people know what shatty is actually asking for?
Didn't he turn down 42 million of tax free tampa bay money?
what if he is asking for 7 million for 7 or 8 years?
and what if Smith gets 4x4? It not gonna be a difference of one or two million.

I'd do a 5 year deal worth $6-6.5M in a heartbeat. It's the 6th year on the deal that makes it much less appealing.

Hey maybe I'm wrong but hes not giving us a 10-15 million dollar discount by leaving that money on the table.
If he settles for 6.5X5 years the Rangers of course would sign him.
