Signing Smith and losing out on Shattenkirk plays out very badly for the Rangers.

They're a borderline playoff time, low seeded. Worst position to be in today's NHL.

They are definitely not a borderline playoff team lol
Where do you get that from?

It kind of seems like the Rangers plan is to get a little bit worse each year, and incidentally a little bit younger.

Loves me some middle road.

Because they overacheived last year and lost their best center.

I don't think they neccesarily over achieved based on their talent, our expectations were just low (as always)

The defense is going to be infinitely better than last season. I'm feeling good

Gotta love making standings conclusions before free agency even opens.

Alao, whoever said that this is looking like Gorton doesn't have a plan...lol no.

I mean, our D will be miles better then last season almost no matter what we do. Staal very likely bumped down to 3LD and Girardi + Klein out.

Doesn't really matter much who we replace them with, our D will be so much better just from that.

i think 6x6 for shatty is REAL scary.

if they give Shatty that contract, Smith say 4x4 then in 3 years when McD is an UFA you'll probably have to give him what...7mil?

Thats 7+4+6.5+5.7 (Staal) for a total of 23.2 Mil on your defense 3.6 mil on DG's buyout..26.8 mil...Skjei will be an RFA...are they bridging him or signing him long term? ideally its long term like McD so youre not getting hammered with a huge UFA contract a few years later..whats skjeis number? 4?

30.8 mil on 5 defenseman....

even if the cap is say 85 mil at that point thats not gonna be enough money to pay your forwards.

WAY too much money tied into your defenseman.

they really need to get rid of staal w/o taking back a bad contract AND they need to have shattenkirk take a discount 5.5mil? 5mil?

the more i look at it, the less i think its happening.

4x4 for smith to me is a crap deal.

id rather overpay shatty a bit than give him that deal.

3.5x3 would be my number on smith...players who dont provide much offense shouldnt get big dollars.

Shattenkirk is getting 7 years. Yandle got $6.35M for 7. That's without no state income tax in Florida. Add $400k-500k to the $6.35M. Big commitment. NMC.

So a Sean Day article comes out of nowhere from Brooks today. The insiders who haven't nailed anything Rangers related since gorton took over all of a sudden are saying hmm don't know if Rangers want him.

I read the same things about Richards by the way.

Yet we are hearing that we are linked to veteran players in Thornton and Bonino and Smith

And we've got one righty dman who's 21 years old

If we're not in on shattenkirk even though we tried to trade for him multiple times I'd be absolutely shocked.

What you're seeing is we've got plenty of leverage because we know he wants to be here. Just playing chicken

He'll be a Ranger first thing when the window opens. Be shocked otherwise

I expect the idea is a small step back but a bigger step forward when the younger players develop

Risky but possible

I'd expect they're still looking to make another move at forward but we'll have to wait and see what it is...not sure they're going to go for a big splash right now, I could see them squeezing by this year without getting another long term center and then bringing Andersson over next season to get that started up.

Miller and Grabner won't shoot 17% again next season.

How long have we needed a 1RD, pure PPQB? Finally on the market. Costs nothing but cap to obtain.

Nah.

Come on.

Nah, Shattenkirk is too old at 28 to give him a long term deal. Oh, Brendan Smith, at 4-5 years? What's the problem? He's 28? What's that matter? Never mind Shattenkirk averages 50 points a season, and Smith 20, we need flexibility.

Fans here would rather roll the dice with a bunch of college free agents we signed. Like 'oh man we cant sign Shattenkirk and/or Smith because they would be blocking Pionk/Bereglazov/Pedrie' who were passed up on when they were draft eligible. Who cares? If they turn out to be good then great but you shouldnt opt against signing a proven RHD PPQB for hopes and dreams.
