Two more somewhat interesting options for depth C's (4C/13F/14F) who didn't get QOd, Dennis Rasmussen and Jacob Josefsson. Neither is super great but both are serviceable depth.

Josefsson has the most hilarious hero chart, can't score to save his life but suppresses shots like a boss, pretty much how i'd expect Hriviks hero chart to look :P

Things can change. We've got the best goalie over the last 20 years as a 7th rounder. Letang was a 3rd round draft pick. Zetterberg a 5th, etc.

C'mon let's be honest, those examples of yours are the exceptions to the rules.

For most part as in 95% of the time, HOF players don't get drafted in the 5th or 7th rounds nor do elite game changing players become available in trades or in UFA.

It's just the way it is. Typically one has to suck badly in order to draft great players and every once in awhile, a GM can scheister another GM in a trade(ie...McDonagh for Gomer) but those are few and far between as well.

Rangers are going about this in the right way. Gorton as has been said numerous times, is trying to thread the needle here which tho not an easy task, I'd say the chances of it being done correctly is a heck of alot more possible with him in charge than it was when Sather was. If the deal we made on draft day is any indicator, I'd say we are retooling just fine.

Id be interested in bringing back Stalberg..he's an UFA right?

Would fit our 4th line very well.

Lets assume no other moves up front for a minute...

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Vesey - Miller - Nash
Zucc - Hayes - Grabner
Fasth - Nieves/Boyle/Andersson/UFA - Stalberg??

not the worst lineup in the NHL thats for sure.

Oh look, Friedman also saying we aren't going for Shattenkirk. But you know, he's also sourcing from Uncle Larry's "article." Like McKenzie, a noted insider with plenty of sources. Right, AK?

I would be ok with giving Shattenkirk the 7th year if he lowers the AAV to $5.7-$5.9 million. Buy him out in the 6th year if things are really going south. But I would give him the contract term upfront to get it done.

They acquired DeAngelo to play him. And they signed guys like Pedrie, Pionk and Bereglazov with the hopes that one of them (along with someone like Graves) would step into a spot. As long as Staal is around I see no way that the Rangers sign both Shattenkirk and Smith.

I'd imagine Staal won't be around once his buyout is a bit more platable. I can only hope no personnel decisions are made based on Staal owning a top 6 spot

Love that the idea of Shattenkirk is cooling off. Smith is another story. The Rangers don't have a guy who can skate with McDonagh without being in over his head, and Smith is the only guy who can play that spot without it hurting his development. Smith can be that guy on a deal with reasonable term, and if/when someone surpasses him, there's nothing wrong with putting a guy on the 2nd pairing while making ~$4M per year.

The Rangers didn't give up Stepan just to skate DeAngelo on the 2nd PP. He's going to likely get bottom pairing minutes at even strength, and put out on the PP as much as possible.

McKenzie had it almost 2 months ago. "Keep an eye on the New York Rangers, I think they are going to be very active. Lots of talk about what they might do to continue to transition into a younger team."

McDonagh, Smith, Holden, Skjei, Staal, Bereglazov, DeAngelo, Graves, Pionk? If the Rangers are hoping young guys are going to take spots, theres gotta be more moves coming.

Smith can play with McDonagh and not look like he's playing over his head.

McDonagh-Smith
Skjei-DeAngelo
Staal-Bereglazov/Holden

Pionk to AHL

Completely agree. Would much rather give an extra million or two to Shattenkirk than Smith. Shattenkirk is exactly what this team needs to pair with McDonagh.

Shattenkirk played very poorly in the playoffs and had a so -so season. The Deangelo move indicates that they are passing on Shatt. Worse case move Smith up. I have never been impressed with Shatt..it all comes down to evaluation and to me he is trending the wrong way. Also with Day getting close (lefty playing on right) there are options. Shatts contract is going to be too heavy for what his return will be.

As long as smith+ Shattenkirk comes in at under 11 million combined, sign both

Agree completely. Enough cap space this year, not to mention Nash's contract off the books next year. Smith at 4x4 and Shatty at 6x6.5 and I'm stoked.

I just don't understand who they pencil in to play with Mac if they're not going after Shattenkirk...

id be shocked if the rangers paid Shatty what he'd legit get on the open market.

I have no doubt they are interested..but i doubt the 6x6 number is palatable for them.

I bet they are thinking 5.5x5 or something like that.

Agreed with this.

I've never been hot on Shattenkirk for us this off-season. It's was clear when they started signing a bunch of young defensemen that they intended to have one playing.

Even if we don't sign Shattenkirk, I can still see other trades happening. This offseason isn't only going to be trading Stepan and signing Smith/Shattenkirk

Smith makes more sense and affords the Rangers more options. Besides a smaller/shorter contract, he can play both sides.

At some point in the future if the Rangers move Staal and/or Pionk is ready, Smith could be moved the the left side.

Would love to acquire a defenseman that puts up 56 points in a so-so season.

McDonagh-Smith
Skjei-DeAngelo
Staal-Rookie
Holden

I would expect something like that. No more big moves necessary.
