Alright got off my lazy ass and checked the last 10 Cup winners and it's this:

Pens 3 times
Black Hawks 3 times
Kings 2 times
Bruins 1 time
Red Wings 1 time

So three of those teams...the Pens,Hawks and Kings sucked for awhile and accumulated solid draft picks

For LA: 8 years proceeding Kings first Cup they missed playoffs all together 6 years, made playoff twice and than won their first of their two Cups. Interestingly the past 3 years since their 2nd Cup they have either missed the playoffs twice and lost in first round the other time. For some reason to me, the Kings seem like the anomaly of how to go about winning a Cup. Their success was predicated after drafting players like DDoughty, JQuick, AKopitar, AMartinez were all players they drafted in the proceeding 3 years before 2008 in the first 4 rounds of their drafts that were bigtime contributers to their multiple Cups. To me the Kings are the outlier as to how most of the teams in past have won their Cups as alot of their key contributors were aquired either via UFA or by trades.

For Chicago: for 5 of the past 10 years despite winning 3 Cups, they have lost in first round including last year 4 times. They have missed playoffs once. They have lost in WCF twice and won their 3 Cups. Their success in the proceeding 3 years before 2008 was drafting transcendental picks such at Toewes and Kane back to back overall #1's both '07 and '08 and making some great FA pickups like Hossa and some great trades as well.

For Pittsburgh: After missing playoffs for 4 straight year proceeding their first round exit in 2007, they have made the playoffs all 10 years this decade. They obviously have won 3 Cups made it to one losing Cup final, lost 4 first round playoff matches and lost two other semi final playoff matchups. Their success in the proceeding 3 years before 2008 was drafting MAF, Malkin and Crosby....enough said. Well OK, I'll say something else. They made some key FA pickups and some great trades(ie...Kessel)

Moral of story: If you can tank and suck for long enough as these three teams have done, with some savvy FA pickups and some furtiutous trades that work out a Cup or two can be within your grasp.

If your the NY Rangers, you can't do it this way. You need too do it the way Gorton is trying to do it...."retool on the fly" or you can get lucky like we got in 1991 and a Mark Messier by a miracle of god was made available by a team whose owner was going bankrupt. I guess we'll have to trust JG's way seeing I don't see a Getzlaf,Toewes,Ovie...etc becoming available in the near future. One caveat as I mentioned a few times. If the Islanders keep up their insanely stupid ways, maybe just maybe a Tavares becomes available and than we maybe have our this generations "Messier".... Other than that, we need to have faith that our GMJG knows what he's doing and has a plan. I trust him as he hasn't failed us yet...:)

Sorry if this has been mentioned already;

Found at the trade section of the main Board;

Dave Pagnotta from the Fourth Period said that the recently bought-out Girardi is garnering a lot of interest from around the league, thought to be 12-15 teams. He is looking for a multi-year deal.

We have no need for Shattenkirk, Smith, any of these players. It'll only lead us to mediocrity. This team needs a rebuild. Our window is shut, time to rebuild.

Go get me two 4th line or 13th forwards, preferably both who can play center, and Nilsson, and I'll go with this lineup for the first game.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Miller-Andersson-Zuccarello
Vesey-Hayes-Nash
Grabner-?-Fast
?

McDonagh-Bereglazov
Skjei-Graves
Staal-DeAngelo
Holden

Lundqvist
Nilsson

And then I'll be fine with the results. If we make the playoffs, great. If not, great. Doesn't matter. Get younger, don't waste the cap space on bad contracts. Make the team better for the future.

This is all so wrong that there honestly isn't even a good place to start when it comes to tearing it down. Just put the idea of rebuild to rest already.

What is this obsession with "get younger" when we have one of the youngest teams in the league? :help:

Thats deceiving though.

I don't remember the stat exactly, but I think we had the oldest "younger player to play a game" of all the NHL teams last season. So while we didn't have a bunch of 40 year old 4th liners or 6th defenseman or back up goalies that would bring up the age numbers, we didn't really have a team with a lot of young talent.

If you compare our U25 talent to that of other teams around the league, we'd be bottom 10 worst.

This is totally unrelated but everyone needs to see it.

I want Mikhail Grigorenko as a reclamation project.

He's still young, trending (slightly) up, been on complete gong show teams which have probably hampered him and he's got size and wins faceoffs.
The last 2 things i don't really care about but coaches do, which means he'd get a fair shake :)
He should have some upside to his game aswell, i really like him as one of our token reclamation projects.
Doesn't hurt that it would give Pasha a Russian friend ;P

There are so many Ranger fans so scared to give out long term deals because of what happened with Staal and Girardi...

Let me guess, because of the Richards deal, next year if Tavares were to hit FA, those same people wouldn't want to give him 7 years either because the Richards deal blew up in our face?

sounds absurd to me. (and this is not for anyone in particular, just a ton of Ranger fans I'm hearing from).

Staal and Girardi could never really skate, and were ABUSED in the shot blocking system of Torts and it's ultimately broken them (combined with not really being able to skate fast to begin with), Shattenkirk plays defense nothing like them, He plays defense like the new NHL, not the 90s.

Nope, I am not the biggest Tavares fan but I would give him a long term contract. I wouldn't be against Stamkos at 7 years last season.

For me there is a very big difference between the top guys who are complete or very unique talents, strong No 1 Ds, and guys like Brad Richards and Kevin Shattenkirk. The later two are just far from dominating talents, and with Brad R especially when he got a little older. The guy was a 3rd line C in many aspects of the game when we signed him. Shatty does not stand out much at all in many areas of the game, in which at best can be described as non-flawed. There is just a huuuuuuuuggggggeee difference between like a Shattenkirk and a PK Subban, Pieterangelo, Doughty, OEL, Herman, Karlsson, McD and so forth.

He's friends with Bereglazov. Check their instagram accounts. They used to comment on all each other's photos like a few years ago.

You are right, lets toil in mediocrity for a few more years, and then rebuild after that. Makes sense.

But what you put up there is a fine time. Not contenders, but solid. How is that rebuilding? Some mediocre late teens/early twenties pick isn't gonna change anything, and is literally the definition of being stuck in mediocrity (see: Bruins, Boston)

We need to accumulate young talent, and develop young talent. The first round pick is important, but not the only important part. You can rebuild without the 1st pick.

If you go with Shattenkirk and Smith, you are hurting the chances of Bereglazov, Graves, Pionk developing. Some people don't even want any of these guys in the lineup next year. They want them all back in Hartford, as if we shouldn't ever promote any players from Hartford. The solution last year was to overpay in a terrible market for Smith instead of promoting Graves. Why was that?

If you sign 2nd, 3rd line forwards, you are potentially inhibiting the development of Buchnevich and Vesey. If Andersson is ready this season, him as well. And if its a long-term contract, it inhibits his development, even if he's not on the team this year.

We don't definitely need a long rebuild. What we do need is to start rebuilding, building the team the right way, and if the situation presents itself to quickly and easily shift to being cup contenders, you do so. If we can sign Tavares, do so. That makes us cup contenders. If not, stick to rebuilding. RangerBoy made a very good point a number of weeks ago about free agency. Look at all the teams who've won the Stanley Cup in the last 10 or so years. How many of those teams built through free agency? Building through free agency is not how you build a team capable of winning the Stanley Cup, its how you build a team that might win a lot of games, but won't win them when they matter due to a lack of the key pieces. You rarely find those key pieces in free agency, which is why if they become available, you give them a blank check.

Very happy to see that we're looking at Nilsson for that backup slot, he's been one of my top targets all spring for that spot.

Good, Agent Beer Gloves will get us Grigorenko then ;)

I was talking about Buch and Bereglazov being friends.

All three of them played together on the 2014 Russian WJC team, so they probably all know each other, although I'm not sure what Buch and Bereglazov's relationship is with Grigorenko.

That was the tournament where Skjei got salty after Buchnevich scored a goal and celebrated in front of the USA's bench.

What is this obsession with "get younger" when we have one of the youngest teams in the league? :help:

People equate youth with "good", not realizing that tanks don't always work out. Edmonton was "doing it right", but needed the lucky bounce off a ping pong ball to land McDavid.

When you realize that tanking is not a sure thing, you end up thinking about "retooling" a little differently.

I still think this team should completely rebuild though.

NYR isn't tearing it down and going into a tank mode rebuild, that's not happening and you all know that.

I think Gorton is looking to stay competetive without mortgaging the future, it's a tough thing to do but it's definitely doable with some smart moves.

Would think of the Rangers were going to take on a short term cap dump for assets it would take place prior to July 1. Either then or closer to training camp.

I think we should be all over Yak. Especially if we trade for Gally. I think AV's one saving grace is getting the most offensive production out of his players.

Was thinking the same, sans the Galchenyuk acquisition.

Yakupov on the 4th line in sheltered minutes and occasional PP usage could be a nice add. 2-3 year deal at minimal $$.

Low risk, high reward kind of player.
