There's no point in getting Yakupov unless you're willing to play him in the top six with talented players who can work around his massive deficiencies and play to his talents

Signing Smith to me is an indication they're not going to get Shattenkirk. Why do I say this? Because signing both and Ziba/Fast/new backup leaves them with under $5 million for two NHL centers and callups. So it means Miller is playing C, someone else is headed out (Nash), or McKenzie is correct and they're fine with Deangelo and maybe Graves/Pionk and not going to spend on Shattenkirk.

The whole "Rangers never rebuild myth": Absolutely false. Times they've gone for a total rebuild in their history 1. Post 1975-1978 2. 85-86 (and then Patrick left and Espo got wacky) 3. Late 80s/early 90s influx of young talent 4. Post lockout which started at the 04 Deadline. You can even count when Emile Francis first came in a s a rebuild.

Times they've rebuilt on the fly 1. Early 80s with Herb Brooks 2. Post-Messier 97 (yes, disaster) 3. Post Jagr into Torts years. 4. Now?

Messier in 91-People thought he was "washed up." I'm not making this up. Go read articles or even watch the DVD about Messier that came out in the mid-90s post Rangers Cup. He even talked about it. Also LaFleur and Dionne were stop gaps. And LaFleur got the Rangers Zubov as he was a comp pic.

Oh and yeah I think if they re-sign Smith than it's pretty dang unlikely that Shattenkirk ends up here unless he takes some amazing sweet heart deal

I think maybe Gorton identified this as a good time to start a rebuild with Pittsburgh and Washington at their peak and realizing the luck it would take to topple both of those teams.

Sean Day and Anthony Deangelo. Two young exciting d-men that if they apply themselves can easily contribute big time to this defense.
I know its a stretch and maybe not the most prudent of things (in Days case), but it would be fun to see both of them make the roster opening night.
If only there was a way to get rid of staal to make room.

Pittsburgh will be good and a top contender, most of that team is intact, but Washington is losing half their D and Williams most likely. They have work to do while giving raises to Kuznetsov and Burakosky.

Crosby and Mallon won't be in their prime forever. Eventually Pittsburgh will move on to a new rebuild after they win 2 more cups lol.

Rangers aren't going to full rebuild...but I think they're trying to position themselves so that in about 2 years they'll be in striking distance again.

Washington will still be a good team and probably a contender but I think this past year was really their peak in terms of having all the right players at the right time and now they're probably going to be bleeding some players (like losing Schmidt ain't great) and Ovechkin etc are a year older

Dunno about Pittsburgh but you also can't really sit around going "well there are other good teams in the league so there's no point in trying"

Rangers will never do a full rebuild, nor should that even be considered right now. The only reason that this conversation has gone on for multiple days is because it is the same 5 posters that keep bringing it back around (excluding the obvious ones that are likely to post a rebuild thread during the post-season).

Shattenkirk is a much better player than Smith, it's not particularly close. PLus LHD-RHD is much better than LHD-LHD.

Another myth that needs to die. LH or RH doesn't influence how a player performs. Chicago won Cups with a LH-LH and RH-RH pairing.

Bereglazov and Smith are left-handed D-men who play on the right side. Nothing wrong with that

People lusting after a fire sale and a full rebuild are puzzling to me. Thankfully, I'm fairly certain that's not the direction the team is going.

Gorton wanted cap flexibility going forward. I loved Stepan and didn't want to move him because I think he's worth his cap hit, but I understand the logic in the move.

Don't underestimate what a winning culture means for the franchise both in the contending now mindset and also for the kids in the future. That's why retooling on the fly is a good play. Stay competitive and also get some assets for the future. Yes, we haven't won a cup but we've been one of the most successful franchises in the league the past 6 or 7 years.

And what happens when we sell everyone off and tank? We're the Rangers, so I'll tell you what happens: there is no generational talent at the top of the draft. Or even worse, we finish last trying to full on rebuild the "right way" and some other team wins the lottery and gets the next McDavid and we get Pavel Bendl.

So people thinking to trade everyone off who is over 23 and stock up picks, remember nothing is guaranteed. I think retooling on the fly, acquiring SOME future assets while also trying to contend in the here and now is the best play. Don't give up 1st rounders, but also try and make the team better.

Opportunities to really improve as a team will present itself. A player like Stamkos was just up for grabs. AO, Malkin, Crosby, McD, Drai, Kopitar, Pat Kane and co, who knows who will be moved next. Keep flexibility and build around younger players.

1. Staal to FLA for Bjugstad who we buy out.
2. Sign Dadonov
3. Sign McIlrath

Stamkos was never up for grabs. He re-signed before hitting free agency.

And why are we signing McIlrath? He was sent down by 2 other NHL teams in a single season. Why don't we sign Jessiman as well?

I'd like Shattenkirk on this team. 7 years is steep. I'd really prefer to keep it at 6 years if possible. Keep it in the neighborhood of $6-$6.5m.

Staal needs to go. Find a way.

When Staal goes, Smith should be the next priority.

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Bereglazov-DeAngelo

I'd also sign McIlrath in a heartbeat. Loved his attitude and work ethic.

Bereglazov is a RD

Picked in the top-3 in the draft

Don't recall but did the Kings actually have a top 3 pick in the draft?

Too lazy to check. What I do recall is most of the teams that have won a Cup in past decade or so for some reason or another either purposly tanked(ie...Pens and Black Hawks) or were just a bad bad team and somehow they picked up some good players and got some hockey gods love(ie...Kings). What am I missing?

Drew Doughty. number 2 overall in 2008.
Obviously huge key to them winning cups.
Gaborik was 3 overall in 2000 (obviously not a kings pick).

Drew Doughty 2nd overall.

Yep, and Doughty was humongous in both their cup wins.

Don't forget Kopitar was the 11th overall, and Brayden Schenn was 5th overall and was a huge part of their trade for Richards and Carter.

Correct, he did play on the right side. But, he shoots left. He shouldn't have an issue playing the left side if necessary. It is not nearly as drastic of a switch to playing backhand off-side.

When Bereglazov was shifted to the left due to injuries in the GC play-offs, he looked a bit off. I am just not convinced shifting him to the left is a good decision

We have no need for Shattenkirk, Smith, any of these players. It'll only lead us to mediocrity. This team needs a rebuild. Our window is shut, time to rebuild.

Go get me two 4th line or 13th forwards, preferably both who can play center, and Nilsson, and I'll go with this lineup for the first game.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Miller-Andersson-Zuccarello
Vesey-Hayes-Nash
Grabner-?-Fast
?

McDonagh-Bereglazov
Skjei-Graves
Staal-DeAngelo
Holden

Lundqvist
Nilsson

And then I'll be fine with the results. If we make the playoffs, great. If not, great. Doesn't matter. Get younger, don't waste the cap space on bad contracts. Make the team better for the future.
