I realize the constraints a team like ours has playing in the meccas of sports where tanking is not permitted. So I know we are getting no Crosby's,Malkins or Kovalchuk'....just aint happening. So I accept the fact that we need to try new and different methods of competing.

I think that's where we believe that drafting and trading off older assets will give us that chance. Nobody is trading us Crosby. We need to draft one.

It's come from 4 separate people.

On one hand, it may be his agent trying to drum up interest but on the other, It doesn't make sense to hand out another big contract when they supposedly traded Stepan to get out from underneath one.

Unless they moved Stepan because they have another big move coming and want to use his funds to offset another player?

Who are the other two sources besides Brooks and the Bobfather?

Three teams tried to trade for Shattenkirk and put a contract on the table. He turned all three of them down.

He's coming to NY. The Smith news makes this almost a certainty.

I'd bet a very large sum of money on this occurring.

It's all about the term I'll bet. The money I think is probably agreed upon

I'm thinking Shatty's camp is wanting 6-7 years wheras JG is saying 5-6 with them giving them some more cash if they go for 5.

I'd think they settle for 6 years at 6.5 per and call it a day. That combined with Smith's 4.25 x 4 still leaves us quite a bit of wiggle room to make some more moves especially if Klein retires and his 2.9 becomes past of the cap space.

Watch him sign some crazy cap friendly deal with the Rangers to give us flexibility to keep everyone and trade for more firepower.

so if Rangers are going with Zibanejad and Hayes as the 1/2 Cs, which I think they are so they can get an accurate judge of what Hayes just may be with more minutes responsibility before his contract (which makes sense), what would be an ideal 3rd line center? Bonino/Hanzal will be overpaid.. I would think he needs to be a center who can win face offs, PK, and is pretty good defensively.. Hanzal obv fits that description but I think he's going to get like 5M or so on the market.

So where are we different on this? Looks to me like we are on same page my friend. I love what Gorton is doing. I loved what he did last year getting Mika for Brass even tho I had a mancrush for Brass even more than I had for Steps.

Business is business and we need to get younger. Gorton is doing this. We have a pretty damn young team as it is. He's getting us even younger.

Newsflash tho Greg: Hard to draft a Crosby when you are picking typically in the 20's and that's if you keep your pick.

I don't have time to do the research but I wonder how many HOF players have been drafted in later part of the 1st round of drafts in the last let's say 25 years compared to HOF guys who have been drafted lets say in the top 10.

I think our best bet to get an elite stud game changer guy is either by a trade where somehow a Stamkos type becomes available or if as we discussed a Tavares becomes available via UFA.

I have faith in JG. He hasn't failed us yet...do you?

You think teams might not offer a ton if they think the Rangers aren't involved or something?

I think, if anything, its more about sending a message to shattenkirk that we aren't going to get into a bidding war against other teams. so if he really wants to come to NY then it has to be a deal that works for us. if he wants the most $$ that's not coming from us.

nothing have been said that we don't want him, we just (allegedly) don't want him on a crazy contract

That makes sense, put it in his hands how bad he wants to come here.

I like JG a lot and I think if it was up to him, he'd move as much log jam contracts as he could to get flexibility. This game today is based around speed, mobility, and having stars who can finish. It's a formula that's worked for Chicago, Detroit, and of course Pittsburgh.

This team would never draft a Crosby because there was too much buzz for the Ranger brass' liking. They go for the oddball pick.

My iPad keeps auto correcting everything :(

 I hate when that happens!! I feel for you. ;)

Edited to add: You have to fight with mac to get the spelling you want. If you go back and correct it at least one time it usually remembers. That's what I have to do on my mac.

Back to topic:

There aren't many good C's available as UFA this year.

You really think Hanzel has the stones to ask for 5 mill per? Wow that would take Tarzan type stones.

Don't get me wrong, I kind of like the guy and think he could help us in the areas you mention and he does have some offensive skills but I was thinking JG says sayanora if he asks for anything more than 3.5 from us. I mean the guy is hurt all the time and even 3.5 would make me nervous if I was beeing totally honest with myself.

After being with you guys now for past 2-3 days and you guys convincing me that Bonino and Hanzel likely being *******s and stupid and trying to get 4 mill per or more, I think I'm resigned to make a bit of a run at Sam Gagner and see if 2.5 for 3 would do the trick or try and hit a home run and see if the Habs would deal us Galyunchuk and a 2018 pick for a Zucc and a higher 2018 pick.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas folks. I guess the ideal of Miller going to center is there and hopefully our new shiny toy L Andersson wins the 4th line job could work for now. I don't know. Going to be a fascinating July 1...that's all I know for sure....

Eventually we gtotta get it right one day? Maybe if we suck enough for 5 years the ping pong balls will go our way and we can yell at JG to draft *stud guy here*

I tried correcting it and it put Stephan back again

Back on topic: not in UFA, but via trade?

I think we should be all over Yak. Especially if we trade for Gally. I think AV's one saving grace is getting the most offensive production out of his players.

I wonder if we'll see Nash traded in the next week or so

Preds and Panthers would be a fit, both need a top 6 winger after losing one in expansion

and if they trade Nash, I would be interested in bringing in Dadonov

Yakupov would flourish here offensively. He'd put up 30-40 points in the Rangers' system.

Unfortunately, the guy can't find the defensive zone even if he had a map. He'd need to have two defensively responsible linemates.

He would kill it on the transition and be a good 2nd unit PP option, but where does he play? Top 9 wingers are all accounted for at the moment unless Miller plays center full time (which is a bad move in my opinion, but I'll let this post be about Yakupov).
