Because you have Hank here? If you are going to blow it up, why spend top dollar on a goalie?

Hank's a lifer here. If we are in rebuild or not ... unless his wish is for one more shot at a cup (and I'd grant him that request and wouldn't even ask for much back ... I'd feel obligated to grant him that)

My prediction for opening night:

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Nash - Andersson - Zuccarello
Vesey - Hayes - Miller
Grabner - Bonino - Fast
Nieves

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo
Bereglazov

Lundqvist
Nilsson

not that I endorse it, but I think Gorton might look at Hanzal for 3rd line center and go with Zib/hayes as the 1/2 and see what happens.. Hanzal would be overpaid, but whos our tough center to play against the othe teams top ones late in games?..

Zibanejad and Hayes are gonna have to step up and put on their big boy pants eventually.

No chance they insert Andersson already at the 2C. I think what MAY be more likely is they package a Hayes/Miller/Fast guy with a prospect to land a 1C and drive everyone else down the pecking order.

No way that team gets under the cap.

Currently I see Zib as a true 2C and Hayes as a high 3C maybe low 2C. That's too much disparity between the drop off at 1. I don't think they just toss Hayes into the second line role and roll the dice he develops into the second line guy we pegged him as ... I think he gets there over time working on the 3C.

So if we have:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Miller-Hayes-Zuccarello
Vesey-Thornton-Nash
Fast-???-Grabner

Who am I missing?

McD-DeAngelo
Holden-Skjei
Staal-Bereglazov

Is that right? ugh... Need to add Smith at a reasonable contract or Shatty on a slightly higher yet still reasonable contract

Even if AV started with those lines we all know there will be changes over the season. I think Zibs and Zooks are tight and showed some chemistry so they may be a pair. Grabner may stay with Hayes. JT could play anywhere. If Thorton played with Nash that could be on a 2nd line.

I do not think Brady should play on the right side. Lets not ruin our new toy. He plays well on his forehand.

Mcd-TBD
Brady-Deangelo
Smith-TBD
Holden-Bereglazov

How much more time are we giving Hayes to develop? He's 25 already. The opportunity is there, and it's time for him to start stepping up. He's due for a contract after next season, so for his sake, he better hope he's ready too.

Obviously we'll know a lot more on 7/1, but right now, the plan for what the 17-18 Rangers are supposed to be is sufficiently unclear.

We've taken a major step back (on paper) by dealing Stepan so far.

Is 17-18 the 'transition' year we were promised two seasons ago? Gotta deal Nash and Grabner and Holden and, and, and, etc.......

The off-season is long, but I have no patience :)

Exactly, we knew that 1RD was needed, that the top 6 center position required strengthening and that Lindberg was highly likely to be lost to expansion draft. Well, these issues remain and at this point the situation at center gotten so much worse. What we do have is a possibility a long term cheap solution at RD and PP help. There's still a boatload of cash and excess at a wing. No one outside of FO has a clue for the direction, especially given Gorton reference to "rebuilt on a fly" that anyone can interpret however they want. And, I'm pretty sure even FO is now down to options B (hopefully) or lower in their offseason plan.

You could very well argue, his best scenario is being traded to a team that has a dramatic drop from 1-2C and could plug him right in ... we are just surrounded by 2 and 2CS (with and without Stepan)

I'm ok with Brady being on his forehand. I also liked what I saw from Skjei-Smith last year. Staal is most likely going to be in that rotation.

McD-Holden(ugh, I am in no way endorsing this, just spitballing)
Skjei-Smith
Staal-DeAngelo

His game has developed fine IMO. He just needs to dedicate himself more.

Stop hanging past the redline hoping for breakaways while we play defense.

Stop going to the bench while the rest of the guys play defense.

Stop cruising ultra slow back to the bench for changes.

If he stopped doing those 3 things (did not do them in the first few months of the season) and fought a little harder for the puck in one on one battles than he is a legit 2nd line center for me. The skills are really there. If he dedicates his mind and body to the game he could be a real stud.

I blame AV for 75% of this.

Smith is a possibility on the right side. I do not think the long term plan is Holdden playing his offside on our first pairing. The things you are saying are legit but its like trying to look at a puzzle missing 40% of its pieces. We have a lot of cap room. I think we have to wait and see who we bring in. It sucks to have to wait but we do not have a choice. In a perfect world I would like the best guys to play on their strong sides.

i get that he's worth that much but its very hard to be competitive when you pay one player 12 M

absolutely

which is why we shouldn't, it's not like he's getting to UFA anyway....

Not sure if I should be afraid or excited.

Sure but it's not what's "fair", it's what's it going to take to get this player for nothing but money to your team?

I would give Tavares up to 11M per year to get him to sign here if he hit FA..

Nash being off the books will be 8M of it.

I think I may understand why but most the other players do not do that stuff. Hayes has to shoulder a lot of the responsibility for his own play unless I'm missing something. Why do you blame AV?

Why are you so certain he's getting to UFA? If the Isles stink this year he could say enough is enough, no? I'm not saying he's leaving...but I absolutely think he could. Not that many people thought Parise would leave the Devils. Point is, there is no way to know.
