Why are you so certain he's getting to UFA? If the Isles stink this year he could say enough is enough, no? I'm not saying he's leaving...but I absolutely think he could. Not that many people thought Parise would leave the Devils. Point is, there is no way to know.

I do think there is a 50% chance he is not a Islander in 2018-19 whether that means trade or UFA.

I think I may understand why but most the other players do not do that stuff. Hayes has to shoulder a lot of the responsibility for his own play unless I'm missing something. Why do you blame AV?

I blame AV for a lot of where this team has developed towards. It's the 'laissez faire' attitude that starts at the top. He just seems way too content with status quo than pushing the development, demanding more from his players, and having a sense of accountability. It's the same metric as having a boss that doesn't give two craps if you do your job well or not ... if you slack off but come to work, it's cool. That's where this team has come. The Stepan telling Hank to 'CHILL' in the Ottawa series was a microcosm of that culture that has developed. I'm not a fan of it.

I would give Tavares up to 11M per year to get him to sign here if he hit FA..

Nash being off the books will be 8M of it.

And the good thing is the current CBA will be expired before his deal ends, so there hopefully there will be another round of compliance buy outs...which might be needed for a team looking at a 32 year old Tavares making 11M per for another 2 years.

My prediction for opening night:

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Nash - Andersson - Zuccarello
Vesey - Hayes - Miller
Grabner - Bonino - Fast
Nieves

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo
Bereglazov

Lundqvist
Nilsson

No way that team gets under the cap.

I disagree I think that team fits under the cap with 500k - 1 million to spare.

Something along this lines of these contracts put that team under the cap by almost 600k while carrying 13 F and 7D.

Zibanejad 5 million per for 4.
Fast 2.25 million per for 4.
Bonino 3 million per for 2.
Andersson 925k (Entry Level Max)
Shattenkirk 6.75 million per for 5
Smith 4.25 million per for 4
Backup Goalie 1.5 million

With that roster I am assuming Holden traded for picks / non roster prospects and Klein retires (goes to play in Europe)

I think they can both be had for LESS.

Yes the back end of the deal could look bad..

At first I wasn't really sure about AV's personality. After Tort's totally over the top antics, anyone would look subdued. But there are times I would love to see a little of that fire in AV.

Exactly Torts and AV are polar opposites of the temperament spectrum. A good coach/boss IMHO is someone who doesn't micro manage and scream at the team and let's them figure things out but also knows when it's time to get in there and motivate and show some accountability. You need a demeanor in the middle.

I had a feeling that was the way you were leaning. AV does have a history of benching guys. I was surprised he let Hayes get away with some things that many coaches would seethe at during games. I would have showed it over and over again in films and then took action but AV is a NHL coach. I'm not lol.

I'm pretty sure there are times AV lights in to these guys. He just does it in private instead of in public view. If he was a doormat this team would not ever be making the playoffs.

I just wish a players play would be the indicator of ice time ... not "who I like" or "who has more experience or a higher salary" ... play the BEST team you can. Ice time should be the motivator ... if it isn't ... then get the guy off the team.

That could very well be true (lighting into guys). At least I hope it is. And I'd prefer he do it behind closed doors.

Zibanejad and Hayes are gonna have to step up and put on their big boy pants eventually.

I meant Hanzal..

Yes Zibanejad and Hayes are going to have to improve. Zibanejad IMO could be a 65 to 70 P center with his skill set. Didn't he have 9 points in 12 playoff games? That's the kind of stuff I could see from him.

I think Hayes is a 50 P guy which would be fine for a 2nd center providing he doesn't get lost half of the season like he did last year.

Agreed. At first I welcomed his demeanor after Torts. Now it's the opposite problem. He only holds Buch accountable and occasionally Miller. Too many fat cats on the team again and it shows in some of those zombie-like performances in key playoff games.

I think they can both be had for LESS.

Shattenkirk maybe (but hes going to come with more term), but I think thats the low end for what Smith is going to get.

Bonino is probably looking at 3.5+. His rep as a playoff performer will get him paid.

Would be an awful investment for this team. Hes a player you bring in to be the finishing touch on a contender, this team is not that, even if they make every other move on that list.

Eh, please tell me how? Bonino will get paid!

And honestly I believe I'm high on some of those numbers. For example clearly a backup goalie can be had for less than 1.5.

I'm sorry, i underestimated just how much cap space we have after the Stepan trade, damn :D

Still want no part of Bonino though.

Shattenkirk 6.00 million per for 5
Smith 4 million per for 4

obviously some salary could be +/- 500K

Parise left because he got a massive 13 year deal by his hometown team, which is what people are saying here. If Taveras leaves, he's not signing a small deal to play with the Rangers. Some team, maybe even the GK, will give him an outrageous deal to be the main guy

Well there are no 13 year deals anymore. Would Tavares stay with the Isles to get an 8th year? Perhaps. But if the team is not going in the direction he wants perhaps he'd rather take similar money (for a year less) somewhere else. Time will tell.

yeah but why leave islanders to go play in vegas .

He would be leaving islanders cause he feels they aren't building team correctly to compete

Unless all he cares about is getting paid. JT strikes me as someone who has a high compete level ... I think he will balance $ along with scenario to win, IMHO.
