You would open the door to other GMs offer sheeting our guys as well then.
well everyone keeps saying the NHL is a business.. offer sheets should be a part of that.

Hardly.
I think we tried that once before. I do not think Gorton would do it. Its frowned upon but it would be interesting.

You mean for Sakic? Yes the same guy who is overpricing his talent.

It is a business and some GMs think it is best for business not to have other teams poaching their RFA. I'm not saying it is right but I do not think Gorton would risk the retribution. Its kind of an agreed upon unwritten rule for some GMs.
I mean the evidence is right in front of you. Would you like to wait for Montreal to fire Julien so you can see it happen again?
This is true, but to a large extent so what? We haven't had a player in a long time that was really worth offering sheeting (McD probably being the only real exception), and if they are good enough that they offer a big contract, the compensation is pretty good.
Yes, there is the chance that it means you are paying all your RFAs $0.5-1m more than they are worth, but 1. try to sign them earlier in the season, 2. create an environment where they are unlikely to leave for slight pay rise.
It only becomes an issue if we one day draft our own superstar, and then we are probably just paying him whatever he wants anyway
Rangers will never submit an offer sheet with Mr. Sather here.
It's more likely we pull off a trade for McDavid or something
Yes. Julien is a stingy coach who jerks around young players. Not the best environment to evaluate Alex, especially since he had him on the 4th line down the stretch and into the playoffs.
Unless you think he's a bottom 6 forward as well just because coaches played him there?
This is the Rangers, I think we all deep down believe no rebuild is coming and they'll find some way whether via trade/FA both to fill the cap space.
Rinehart is actually a good target... I do think Buffalo would move him for guys who can help them win sooner. (or at least try to)
And this is one of the few teams you can trade McDonagh to in order to get a legitimate center piece and put the rebuild into action.

Can we see what McDonagh looks like away from Girardi before we trade him?
Or maybe never trade him?
