Tavares will be a free agent in one season. Islanders haven't improved, they've lost their second best defenseman. They balked at the price for Duchene, Tavares is supposedly waiting to see what the Islanders will do.

Tavares could stay in NY by signing with the Rangers. We could offer him a lot of money. He's one of the best players in the NHL. He'd immediately make us a Cup Contender. Don't ****ing sign Kevin Shattenkirk, Brendan Smith, Joe Thornton this season. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Try to sign Tavares next season. If not, don't use the cap space, and tank.

If Tavares would come here I wish he would let it be known now. :)

Stamkos was going to FA too..

When will people realize elite players do not hit the free agent market in the NHL?

and no I'm not advocating to spend just to spend.. just making it clear, Tavares wont hit FA

The Rangers are never going to tank. Save your breath and stop wasting forum space.

Tavares wont hit the market. He hasnt given any intention on possibly leaving NYI either. Dont hold ur breath

Ya see you are the one looking at this the wrong way IMO. So long as we improve the sieve like backend that we had last year which would mean signing a Shatty and re-signing a B Smith. Them two along with the addition of DeAngelo improves that back end dramatically.

You add Bonino to the mix, even with no Stepan maybe you add a Boyle as a #4 type, consiering how talented the rest of our team still is, it's a no brainer our team is quite a bit improved over last year. Stepan as much as I loved him as a player, let's be honest, blew chunks last year. Him not being here is not going to be the reason we wouldn't make the playoffs. Stepan not being replaced by a reasonable facsimilie which is what Bonino would be and not addressing our back end would be the reason we wouldn't be a contender.

Seeing Gorton has shown he knows his **** and I trust his eval skills very much, I have complete confidence Rangers will be much much better than a bubble team and very likely be better than last year which interestingly alot of peeps like you also said would be a bubble team.

Peeps in here aren't taking into account the advances that a Buch or Vesey could make this upcoming season. Maybe Miller and Hayes take an even bigger leap than they both did last year despite their falling to earth by end of season and in the playoffs.

We are only at 6/24. Let's see where we are at after UFA starts before we draw any conclusions...sound good?...:)

I just think we differ on Philosophy. I agree our D corp has been horrendous ... the trade for DeAngelo + Shatty and Smith and losing Girardi and Klein if he retires and if we can find a taker for Staal ... our defense becomes probably the best in the NHL overnight. But I am just not sold yet on all the kids taking those enormous leaps forward to produce and compete with the big boys in the NHL.

For years we have wanted a big stud forward to lean on for production, we made a trade for Nash, and I think his contract stunk but he's been quite the good player for us. This is where we have missed the boat, we have so many good quality players (depth) but no knockout punch offensively speaking. That is the one thing I have prayed this team finds. My theory is that it's very difficult to win if your first line is not elite. Stepan, I love the guy, but he was more of a 2C on a championship level team. You put him on say Chicago, Washington, Nashville, etc he would thrive in that 2 slot. Here he was asked to be the 1 ... and he was always just a notch below that (that's not an insult to his game.)

Gorton taking questions after the draft. 2 takeaways for me:

1) His response when asked about whether they were happy with the players who were available when they drafted definitely tells me they're frustrated they weren't able to move up from 7.

2) His last line about the cap: "We can listen to some things that maybe weren't able to listen to a few days ago." They are definitely not done with trades this offseason.

I wonder if they're gonna try to get Henrik Borgstrom out of Florida. Big center, lit up college hockey with Denver. Try to get what you can out of Tallon.

Tavares or bust? There's more than one way to win a cup.

Yeah, you are right, signing Kevin Shattenkirk to the worst contract in the NHL, #4D Brendan Smith to a terrible contract, and 37 year old Joe Thornton to a 3 year contract for a player who can't skate or score goals is going to make us a cup contender over a top 10 player in the NHL. :help:

If the Rangers sign Shattenkirk, I would not sign Smith as well.. They can sign Shatt, extend Zib, Fast and still have quite a few of cap left over for following years.

would play De Angelo with Skjei, and on the PP..

Mcdonagh-Shatt
Skjei-Deangelo

but then we're stuck with Staal/Holden. :help:

This honestly scares the **** out of me.

McKenzie knew the picks before they were made, he was announcing them on air before they were selected. He said earlier in the day that we were interested in 4 players at #7. Pettersson, Glass, Andersson and Suzuki. Gotta think we wanted Pettersson and Glass, and with them getting taken 5 and 6, we were down to option #3.

Exactly...been saying this all morning.

Not a chance on gods green earth we'd ever go in tank mode.

The closest we'd come to a "tank job" would be if and this is a big if, Gorton decides to not get a big name FA dman like a Shatty or a big name center to replace Stepan and saves all his money for another day. I'd give this a 5% chance of happening but I guess it's possible.

And even than and GMJG didn't spend or trade for anyone, we'd still likley have enough talent on this team to still be a bubble team...lol

Peeps in here are understating how good our core still is and how potentially good our young one's are.

Shestyorkin needs to be a number one goalie for the next two years is that even going to happen?

But I think that timing is right. Hank isn't giving up real time for another two years anyway. At the least.

In two years if we have shestyorkin and Hank splitting games I'd be happy with that.

Gives us more time to see wall huska and halverson some more as well

It was hard to hear the questions reporters were asking as there was so much background rumbling in the room. So I was left to assume what he was talking about.

Who was the player the reporter in the 2nd to last question asked Gorts about in which Gorton said he couldn't even talk about as he was on another team and he still had one or two years left on contract? I was thinking maybe it as Tavares. Did anyone catch that?

On the whole, I'm probably the wrong guy as I know I'm biased toward Gorton, but we are really lucky to have him under the controls of the ship. He's just a very impressive guy. I'm very impressed also the way he answers questions, looks ya in the eye. He doesn't seem to come across either like he has an attitude or anything. I don't know...I could see him as a politician easily if he wasn't our GM....hah

Its the opposite of what he should be doing.

Like DB said, I don't exactly see what assets he has to use in a trade. So unless they're planning on banking a bad contract or 2 to take back assets, I see no good that will come of this.

It has RNH written all over it.

Why? Have there been any mentions of EDM wanting to move him?

Guess you guys forget 2004 when we TRIED to tank before the lockout. The Return of Jagr had us thinking we'd re-built overnight. Maxim Kondratiev, Jaekko Immonen and Jozef Balej said no,
