Hopefully Gorton has something up his sleeve. We probably aren't a playoff team right now

I think he has one of two ways he's going to play this ...

either A) make a move to try and acquire a young highly skilled centerman to build with or B) make small moves to stay 'competitive' then dump them all at the trading deadline. The question is this, even if making some small tweaks, are they better than Pittsburgh? If the answer is no, then you need to fully look at this rebuild in a different way. Look 2-3 years down the road and stock young highly skilled players.

I think a good 4th line is very important, but if the your first line can't compete with the first on other teams ... you are so far behind, you think you're winning.

This is us in a nutshell ...

Show me a team that is always bragging about how they 3 guys that could start at QB and I will show you a team that has no great QB.

Why not? RNH with 4 years left at $6m. LH center who has scored 50+ points in the past. Developing a nice 2-way game.

Where he is at right now reminds me of where Brassard was when the Rangers acquired him from Columbus. There's more there.

He's Stepan light. Not dissing Stepan, but if you are moving him and making cap space ... you UPGRADE the position not go laterally.

As it stands today, I think this team is a bubble team thats leaning towards not making the playoffs for the 2017-2018 season, I don't feel like thats all that much of a bad thing as I think the 2018 draft is going to be a good one, we have some players on expiring contracts to trade for picks at the deadline if they're on the outside looking in. And with the way the draft lottery is set up now, they could move up a long way even with the 15th pick with just a few bounces from ping pong balls (which is why I think purposely tanking is starting to require more luck than winning the cup). With the 2 first rounders this year, and another first + whatever next year, this team could be set up for a quick bounce back.

Do they have the space to match and then sign McDavid at 14M, though?

I honestly don't know. I would assume it'd be a tight fit, though.

If they actually had to sign McDavid at 14m, then I guess that would change things.

But I highly doubt he commands that much. I think he understands he needs to take a bit of a pay hit to keep the team competitive

It depends honestly. They have the core of their defense locked up at decent cap hits long term, which gives them more flexibility on the forward side of things.

I also see them doing what the Blackhawks do and have to infuse the team with ELC as much as possible to fill out the team. Draisaitl and McDavid will be very similar to the Toews and Kane contracts (meaning they both will eat up a big bulk of the cap)

Or he's content with taking a step back for a year or two to replenish an absolutely barren system.

Then he's a complete idiot if he doesn't trade mcdonagh and zucc to get highly skilled young prospects or even nhl ready players as well..

don't go half in, half out, rebuild or try to contend ,trying to do both is absolutely futile.

We don't know if he's willing to trade Zucc/McDonagh, though. I think July 1stg will be very telling about the direction of this team.

I could totally get on board the TANK train. I may be alone in that world, but if you know in your heart you can't compete with Pittsburgh .... why not set yourself up for another 5-7 year run by moving players and tanking?

Agreed. Although they'd probably screw up a top five pick anyway.

As it stands now, they have 9 players under contract for 2018. They're going to be fine.

They will have to look past 2018 or end up trading a TB ended up having to do. I think Dolan should pay a really hot model to date McDavid and then have him demand a trade to NY.

Agreed. McD, Nash and Zucc should be available.

Now this, this could potentially be concerning

You just traded away your 1C for futures. The guy conceivably poised to replace him should be signed long term

If they don't lock Zibanejad up long term, the offseason will be a bust. Sign him now, long term, with a lower cap hit. Bridging him just brings up the price later. You have the space to do it

It' very hard to do both. Only team I've seen do that and win is Boston.

I think we'll sign a 3C, and bring up someone to play 4C.
Let Deangelo develop in the top 4 with skjei

probably trade Nash at the deadline.
Simple plays.
